Silence is one of the most crucial spiritual disciplines, but in this case, it's not just silence, but silence in the presence of God. Dallas Willard was speaking to the women of the Valley Vineyard and humorously titled the message, "Let a Woman Be Silent." The truth is that every person has a deep need to stop all activity and be transformed "in the secret, in the quiet place."

Amazing, this man is carrying God - not just talks about it. What a blessing it was to listen to his words!

First, it is so nice to see more views amassing and 2nd, it is nice to know the more views means more growth in believers. This mans’ gentle spirit is so Christlike, it is almost as if the Master was talking to me personally.

What, precisely, are we supposed to do (focus on, think about, whatever...) when we are in Solitude/Silence? He never really clarifies, as far as I can tell.

Sorry for the delay, but this article might be helpful. dwillard.org/articles/personal-soul-care It may be at first difficult to try to "do nothing" or to simply "smell the roses," but with time it will nurture your soul. Blessings, Bill

Sequestered, you clear your consciousness of sin disease lack limitation death - Mans world - by awareness of the presence of God. Nothing to do, no concerns, no pressures of time, no doing, no trying, just Be. Peace. Your only desire is that you might know the one true God -the joy of inner communication w/God. (Not talking or asking, just listening receptively for direction, guidance, instructions, support). Grace. Think over and over..."thank you Father, your grace is my supply, nothing else do I need." Until you FEEL it. Or perhaps cite scripture and dwell on it e.g. I and the father are one...,he will find perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, etc. Or Contemplate the immortality or omnipresence, omnipotence, omniscience of God. Acknowledge that within you is the kingdom of God. Take a few seconds to see if a message or theme is delivered to you and just go with it. If not, then, pray silently, "Father pray. Reveal thyself, the activity of Thy Being, in me and thru me. Let the spirit make intercession for me." Then, as the mind goes slow, as thoughts dissipate, think to yourself: "speak Father, for your servant listens." Go with it. Listen for the message of your Christ within. Your still small voice. There may be a relieving breath and a "click" that the message has been imparted, realized. "Thank you, Father, the whole kingdom is within me."

Around the 24:00 minute mark: "The word of Christ comes in and we choose to let our minds dwell on God. And now, if you forget everything else I say today, that's the most crucial thing. Try to remember."

When I knew Dallas personally as a young man, I was still unsure about the centrality of Jesus. In time, I came to deeper faith and knowledge of the great truth - Jesus Christ is Lord of all. I've started to put his (Dallas') teachings on solitude and silence into regular practice. Along with regular prayers of repentance and forgiveness (that last one is the main thing), I'm starting to experience divine healing, both of my inner wounds and even in my body as well. Most of what we suffer in our flesh is the result of sin, usually anger and lust. I have a long way to go, but I know that God is helping me and drawing me deeper to fullness of life in Him.

I never met him, but I believe Mr. Willard became a saint while on earth. We in the church are all saints, but I mean he became one of those great human beings who were able to give more of themselves to God, and more of God to us.

Amazing message. But did Jesus or the disciples say or show we should be silent before God. My spirit says Dallas is spot on. But I see the biblical progression... Pray in upper room then holy spirit comes and they become "noisy" and go out to change the world. What you guys think? And I think that the reason why Dallas used that verse women remain silent is because there was no other verse in the NT. And he used it out of context.

I think you have to bypass the mind. You think nothing. Not even about God. At least having listened to quite a few of these podcasts that what seems to be meant. But who knows….its never clear.

Yah. I am in on the joke, Dan Yates. I am going to explain it to those who don't know: Dallas said that it was "verboten" (pronounced "ferboten") for a woman to expose her elbows. That was a legalistic attempt at "holiness".
