I am starting the process of becoming a vet tech but I want to specialize in zoo animals so I can work as a zoo vet tech... how did you become a zoo vet tech and does it really take as long as the research says?? (It said it takes 5+ years to become a zoo vet tech)

Generally, I've been told by someone in the field you do the same school as a small animal vet tech takes but you gain the experience of the zoo by volunteering. Zoo vet technician does take 6-8 years. Four for your bachelor in animal science and the 2-4 years for the technician program. I hope this helps and good luck!

You have to finish high school and then you can apply for a two-year program where you get your associates of veterinary technology and then you have to get your certification as well. After that you can do an externship or you work in a zoological setting.

You need to have a strong interest in veterinary medicine and a love for working with animals as well as people! ​To become a licensed veterinary technician - a requirement to be hired by the Dallas Zoo - you must attend a two-year program accredited by the AVMA and have an associate’s degree in veterinary technology. These programs require an internship for on-the-job learning, which many zoos offer! After completion of the vet tech program, you are required to sit for state and national exams to obtain your license. All of the techs at the Dallas Zoo also have bachelor’s degrees. It's a challenging journey but beyond rewarding!

@@DallasZooTube would getting a bachelors degree higher my chances in this field? My college offers an associates degree but I've seen online accredited schools that can further it to a bachelors for there are none in California that offer a Bachelors. Could this be acceptable? Thank you for the wonderful advice I have taken good mental notes

@@briannaprieto3043 hi there. Just wanted to chime and let you know that there is a four year vet tech program in California. Cal poly Pomona is the only school to offer this in the state. I graduated from their program with a BS in animal health science and am therefore a Registered Veterinary Technologist.
