Dalmatia meets the Western mentality, what can possibly go wrong?
On the 7th day, God created Paradise, and he called it Dalmatia. But the gates to the Kingdom do not open automatically. The only sentence you need to equip yourself for Paradise. A sentence it took me 15 years to learn. Next up - Hvar: 10 Things I Never Expected to Find on Croatia's Premier Island.

In Bosnia and Hezegovine there is no McDonalds anymore because of bribery. And I am happy that there is none because our traditionl food is so much better especially japrak and sarma. Btw @PaulBradburyCroatiaExpert You should visit Bosnia and Herzegovina and try some of our food and if you like multicluturalism you would be happy to find two religions and two branches of christianity co exist on the same place. Since there is 17% of croatian people in Bosnia and Herzegovine that country culturally and historically is a part of Croatian homeland. So I would be glad for you to pay a visit and you will see that the lifestyle in BiH is not much different than in Croatia.

Hope you can do more about all of Croatia.. It will be better than anything else. You are a great ambassador for our land. Thank you for that.. Sadly, I have moved to Germany.. Because and only because of money.. It is difficult to live in Croatia if you don't have really good job and family house or apartment.. To pay a rent from salary is impossible.. I am a photographer for last few years.. so I wish to be able to come to Croatia for longer time.. So much beautiful places and nature there is for photography.. Živjeli 🇭🇷

Oh yes, Paul! Do not try to change to change Dalmatia, but expect Dalmatia to change you. That's the reason why I come back every year. I first came to Croatia in 1997, first to Dalmatia in 2003. And everytime I come back, I switch from German mode into Dalmatian mode for a few weeks and it's definitely good for me.

As a regular visitor to Dalmatia, having married into a wonderful family from one of the Islands, for over 25 years, I watched this today and grinned. Agree with every word although for my own benefit/sanity/blessing (and there must be a clever German word for that combination) I have boiled my own Dalmatian advice down to just trying to gain a modicum of understanding around the word/concept of 'Pomalo'. My Dalmatia summed up in a single expression, with a heartfelt desire for it to be, one day in the distant future, the last words on my lips.

Roden sam nekad davno u Zabrebu. Odrastao u Minhenu. Napustio sam Minhen 1991 i dosao ratovati za "stare slave djedovinu". Protiv Srbocetnika i njihove "Entourage". Poslali su me u Split. Organizirati odbranu Dalmacije. Ja sam dusom, srcem i tijelom Hrvat. Bog vas pozivio drage Dalmatinke, dragi Dalmatinci. Nikad se nikome nedajte prominit! Odgajajte svoju djecu u duhu vasih prabaki i pradjedova. Lijep pozdrav od bivseg djelatnog casnika IV. Unfortunalty, the low lives, the worst kind of them, politicians, corrupted, those with politic connection, nepotism, with no moral nor patriotic particle- did change Dalmatia - if you have live there last 25 yrs, you might notice extreme beton-ization, ilegal and savage construction, total infrastructural caos, nobody and nothing during winter (It wasn't like that in 90s and early 2000), even sport is dying, dialects also, my nieces don't speak not close to what my family have spoken for decades. But, what expect from 'scholars' of those who called Dalmatia- just Southern Croatia, who never respected its rich history, who did total revision of it?

But, sure you can imagine that Split printed all those literature. Or that Croats built Dubrovnik. Or where was raised Petar Krešimir IV. Anyhow, Croats came as warrior tribe like Serbs and Hungarians and picked some Slavs that were living in Great Moravia (that people from Zagorje, are the same origin as Czechs, Slovenes, Slovaks, etc), those Slavs ofc weren't as strong as Franks, so Croats, Serbs and Hungarians that had some sort of military and political organization got their way, so to say. But then, the peasants loved Koloman, beloved Hungarian king, that didn't forced them to go some stup!d crussades. So what exactly is hrvatstvo? Guduscani? Legenda o Zvonimiru? If you read Hungarian sources, Koloman was savage in semipermant war with his brother in Hungary. Zagreb, that Bela IV established, that had under Austro-Hungarian Empire. August Senoa, a half Slovak, half German, like many others in that panslavic movement, movement that wasn't even Croatian. It was a response to Hungarian nationalism, at least in Croatia. Czechs crazy writtings, in Dalmatia ž was x, and ć ch. Or, we can speak how Hungarians prefered a Croat Ivan Zapolya, while Croats prefered Habsburgs. We can speak about local warlords, that were robbers, and pirates that did not even try to make some city of agriculture (OK it is difficult in Dalmatia) or mercancy, now beeing heros, that went to Hungary to do well, kill political opponents ofthe common king, like Kacics, Uskoks did what, other Croats were Dodge's bodyguards, or Croati à cavallo, others terrific mercenaries for various strangers, like in France, where cravatte term was coined, other local warlords in Bosnia blame bogumili in Bosnia for heresy and then sold them as in Rome, slavery was kinda OK. My family is from Venice and from only normal place in Dalmatia, Republic of Poljica, Dubrovnik for poors. And ofc Dalmatia was never obssesd with politic ideas, but cared for the work, as in Split, whole city went to funeral of Antonio Bajamonti and the guy today does not have the streetz Julije has. Pathetic. And ofc ,nation states are bastard childs of bloody French Revolution, and Regnum Croatorum was barbaric vassal kingdom of Regnum Francorum, and Croats after that like I said, prefered a Hungarian king. So much, of your history knowledge, it does not matter when your ancestry goes, as state is not etnic but political construct, like kingdoms and empires. And it was other way around, Croatia incorporated (some, selected) legacy from Dalmatia in what is today. Dalmatia was mixed ofc, of Mediterranean, romanized world and due to Venice, due to Rome, due to Il Rinaschimiento it has all that churches that looked like italian, it had that influence so it was cradle of literature, that was all printed in today much hated Venice. Marcus Marulus was of mixed origin (like many others) due to that he could went to school in Italy and he could became what he did become. So. Today, we see that postrojbina doing, like I said betonization, destruction of the herritage, history revisionism. But hey, you so think that medieval Croats or Croats from 18th century cared so so much about having the state or kingdom? Sure, they all went to King Zvonimir's funeral. Lol. Or today, they are like Jews, the mayority lives outside of that state. Go. Figure. But you can continue to speak nonsenses, and think that is an argument for that- your ancestry. What a fallacy. Like I said, mine family is from actual croatian independient state (that sure was not Dubrovnik, Ottoman vassal state, that gave Neum and passage to them, so if it weren’t for Venice, all Dalmatia would be muslim Bosnia today, but Croatia can pretend otherwise and make up some stories, I can assure you that those Dubrovcani were the enemies of mine ancestors, not to mention Vikings and who helped with that one), and they prefered independet state, until aer robber and massive killer Napoleon came there. So. You see. I actually now what I am talking about, and I know the history of Dalmatia, whole history.

Actually, Croatia and "Balkan" couldn't be more opposite things. Geographically and culturally. Geographically, the Balkan mountain is situated in eastern Serbia and Bulgaria, far far away from Croatia. The story began when Serbian ethnologist and politician Jovan Cvijić wrote a book, in which he pushed a lie called the Balkan peninsula and listed "Balkan countries" for the first time, including Croatia and Bosnia. Why? On purpose. Because Serbian people desperately want to be attached to Croatia for obvious reasons. If we look at the definition of the term Peninsula, that geographical part which he called "the Balkan peninsula" is not a peninsula by any means. In fact, it is not clear to anyone in geographical science how the land, which is connected to the continent by such a wide arm, could even be declared a peninsula. No one thinks of calling Greece a "Balkan" country, although if anyone is on the peninsula, it's the Greeks." Cvijić harnessed all his forces to serve the affirmation of Serbianness, the Serbian national idea and the expansion of Serbian domination, and even the state, over the entire area of the South Slavic people. The idea of uniting all "Balkan tribes" is developing because (they claim) their members are actually of Serbian origin, only slightly different in historical sequence and "contaminated by influences from peripheral areas". We cannot and must not accept the classification of Croatia in any frameworks or names of "Balkans", "Western Balkans", "Balkan Peninsula" and the like. At no cost! Therefore, let this text also be a call to Croatian geography and science, and especially to the political elite, to persevere as much as possible in explaining and scientifically interpreting the real components of the geographical position of our hard-won homeland, Croatia. By the way, I am a Croatian ethnologist. Croatia is located in Southeast Europe, and culturally (especially Dalmatia) belongs to the west and central European countries that are oriented westwards!!! diplomatski.com/pripada-li-hrvatska-balkanu/ www.cnak.ba/kolumne/uciteljica-zivota/hrvatska-nije-na-balkanu-balkanski-poluotok-uopce-ne-postoji/

There are so many opinions about Croatia and the Balkans, both geography and mindset. I am researching all angles for a video next year. It should lead to a lively discussion.

@@PaulBradbury If you love Croatia, stop calling it Balkan, because you are insulting and humiliating the Croats. We are not talking here about opinions, I was writing about science. 1) Geography is a science and geographically there is no peninsula here. I was citing Dr.sc. Dragutin Feletar, a famous Croatian geographer and former dean and professor at PMF University, who has explained in detail scientifically why the Balkan peninsula does NOT exist. In order for a part of the land to be geographically called a peninsula at all, the sea, i.e. water legs must be longer than the land, which is not the case in the case of the "Balkan Peninsula". I gave you the link. Mountain Balkan is located in Serbia and Bulgaria. Something like calling British people "THE CAMADERRIES", after the Irish mountain (I mean, you speak similar language, too). 2) About MINDSET. By classifying Croatia in the "Western Balkans" (countries of the former Yugoslavia, minus Slovenia, plus Albania), the European political powers once again humiliate our country. During her first official visit to Germany, our president Kolinda Grabar Kitarović correctly corrected the German president who used the term "Western Balkans", and she said that Croatia is located in Southeastern Europe. For centuries, Croatia belonged to and built the Mediterranean Roman Catholic culture and features of the Central European cultural circle. Its inhabitants will never accept any "Balkan" qualifications. Anyone who calls Croatia the Balkans is insulting the Croatian people. Please, respect that.

My following words should actually be a response to the contribution of "@mianmenu". However, I have decided to confront the general public with these words of mine. Here is the text: How to respond to such a post? Do I have a right to reply to this post? I don't live in Dalmatia. Nevertheless. I'll start with my great-grandfather's words. "The Croats do not appreciate what God has blessed them, and our homeland, with". The criticism of the existing system is justified. That is not the question. The question is, what are the alternatives to the current situation? To regard the so-called "Western way of life" as an alternative would be like to consider death as a cure for cancer. Criticizing the corrupt political system is the duty of every responsible citizen. However, the ability to constructively criticize wants and needs to be learned and practiced by citizens. And that, it seems to me, is sorely lacking in Croatia. I don't see much constructive criticism, however necessary it would be. What I see too often is the propagation of one's own personal frustration. This may or may not be justified. But it doesn't really lead to changes in society. What strikes me is - in my eyes - a completely wrong idea of many Croats of what life is like in these "Western societies", what it is like to live in these societies. Especially among those who never tire of criticizing Croatia and everything Croatian, I am struck by this lack of opportunity to compare, to relativize. I can't say - and regularly - that these people really know what it means to live in a Western society if you haven't inherited, if you don't belong to the mafia of the new, self-appointed elites. Gone are the days when in the so-called West, with honest work, you had a real chance. I wonder if these people are really aware of what "modern slavery" means when they talk about it. After all, a low wage for honest work is exploitation, not slavery. It becomes slavery when girls are forced into prostitution at the age of 12 or 13 in Western societies. And if they don't have a chance to escape it. It becomes slavery when this woman, who does a good job for low wages, also has to put up with being humanly humiliated and sexually abused by her Germanic department head or factory manager. Because she has to feed her family. And this is the order of the day in various forms in all Western societies. So why don't these people inform themselves about it when they go to the Golden West today? Do these people have any idea what it's like for foreigners to work for TÖNNIES in the promised Germany, for example? What is it like for the Ukrainian scientist to be lured to Germany with promises and then end up in a brothel? Sorry, it had to be now. I have the feeling that those who shout the loudest here have little idea of this world.
