I think this channel is my favorite because you give owners permission to tell their dog to knock it off without being over the top. Some trainers are so extreme with either handling dogs with kiddie gloves or being a hard@ss. You're in the middle and just kind of chill and reasonable. Also, your methods don't require owners to live with a fanny pack full of treats on them at all times. Re: Brick background- it made me bless y'all's hearts. 😂

Hi Joel, I'm the owner of two Dalmatians and I am well informed about the breed. They were bred to run alongside horse and carriage to protect from stray dogs and highway men. This evolved eventually into them becoming the mascot for firefighters back when they were horse drawn. It is said that they would bark as they ran along to help clear the roads. Dalmatians are higher energy and can run 50, yes 50, miles a day with relative ease. Dalmatians do have a strong protective instinct and while they should not be straight up aggressive, it is in the breed standard to be "aloof" with strangers. The health issues they are most known for is deafness (about 10% are born deaf or unilateral hearing) and they have a higher chance at forming urinary and bladder stones.

I love the breed I'd love to use a Dalmatian for a working hybrid. I've bred puppies exported to be service and SAR dogs and some bought as guard dogs. Those were redose x rotties and I'd love to test the mix out for temperment, since I'm blessed with the red nose who has an impressive temperament. Thank you for having me on guys it was cool . Looking forward to more pod guests too. I guess I didn't answer why I like the channel as well as I could've. You break everything down into easy to explain and use ways as you're working with the dogs and then we can all learn much faster. You're just a really good teacher. The videos I enjoy the most are the ones where you explain how to dissect the situation to get to the root cause or behavior needing modified.

What I like about the channel: You deal with SERIOUS aggression issues and explain solutions in a different way. You are also unapologetic (in a good way) in regards to your solutions. "The proof is in the pudding." Podcast: I like learning about what makes you tick and how your dog training mindset is actually how you live your whole life (seemingly, I don't know you personally).

I’m a first time dog owner to an energetic border collie and here’s what I like about this channel: As opposed to other dog training channels, you don’t use tools (except a head harness), and you have pretty much the same methods for all dogs (with nuance). So it eliminates the analysis paralysis effect of deciding which method and tools to use, your videos basically show the same methods being applied over and over again on different dogs! Another thing is that your audience is the average dog owner who wants to do everyday stuff (like me). Your no nonsense approach and general common sense resonate with me. And finally, you talk clearly and get your point across well even while handling dogs. Thank you for this channel 🙏

@@Veredzil Yeah, but ideally, you really should get some experience with easier breeds first before getting such a high maintenance dog. It sounds like you’re an exception, but I can’t tell you how many people get a breed that ends up being too much for them to handle and then they either dump it in a shelter or they keep the dog, but both the owner and the dog are miserable because they can’t meet their dog’s needs.

@blueflare3848
@blueflare3848 3 ай бұрын
@@shlimey04 It’s funny you bring up pit bulls. That’s actually my dream dog. I’ve wanted one for years and have done an extensive amount of research on them. My honest answer? No, I would not recommend a pit bull for the average first time owner. I think you should own at least one dog prior, preferably a beginner friendly breed. Generally, pit bulls aren’t particularly difficult dogs to raise. A pit bull that has been well-trained and well-bred makes for a great companion. However, pit bulls can be very high energy, more than the average first time owner is willing to deal with. They’re also more prone to dog aggression compared to other breeds. While it isn’t a guarantee, it is something you must keep in mind when owning a pit bull. You need to be able to accommodate for a potentially dog aggressive dog. Keep in mind that pit bulls were originally bred as game dogs. They often have a high drive and high prey drive as well. Above all, the biggest reason I wouldn’t recommend a pit bull to an inexperienced owner is because of the stigma. When you own a stigmatized breed, it is crucial that your dog is on its best behavior at all times. You need to train it perfectly. You must be a good advocate for the breed. I do not believe that a pit bull is a good dog to learn through trial and error with. Society perceives pit bulls differently than other breeds. Even if your dog isn’t actually aggressive, certain behaviors can and will be perceived as aggression by others. That’s a lot of pressure for anyone, let alone an inexperienced owner. I would have loved for nothing more than to get a pit bull for my first dog, but I think getting a different dog first was the right call. I’ve learned a lot from owning and raising a dog. There are things I know now that I didn’t before, which in turn will make me a better pit bull owner and advocate later down the line.

We just rescued two ten month old bonded littermate huskies and in just a few days, you've completely changed this from overwhelming to encouraging. Kept in a crate for 8-16 hours a day together since birth, they weren't potty trained or anything, but well socialized to people. They're so smart and responding well to your techniques. The big hurdle we're going to have to face is getting them to be ok being apart from each other, which is coming up soon as they're no longer in heat and we can get them spayed. Been a wild 11 days, they went into heat like 3 days after we got them before we could get them spayed!.

I then stumbled on Zach George, this was one of those "this is too good to be true" feelings with a lot of content that is just filled with adds and in a perfect world scenarios. Then I found your channel and was blown away! This is the content needed for the average joe, real person. Your video are full length training from start to finish, teaching realistic solutions to communication and in a timely manner that most people need! From a podcast perspective I would say that it further proves that you are real, not an internet personality. You're not putting on a show or click baiting for views, you show everything in training and now giving a background into your life outside of training. Its a real breath of fresh air in a world of social media to have someone provide training needed and not put on a fake personality for views.

I had a fascinating perspective shared by a breeder I recently spoke with. She explained that following the popularity of the 101 cartoon, there was a surge in backyard breeders attempting to capitalize on the demand for this specific breed, often neglecting the importance of breeding for healthy genes. Consequently, many unsuspecting buyers ended up with puppies prone to deafness. This lack of awareness about the genetic predisposition led to frustrating situations for owners, as their inability to communicate effectively with their deaf puppies inadvertently led to misunderstandings and even aggression from the dogs, mirroring the frustration of their owners.
@blueflare3848
@blueflare3848 3 ай бұрын
This is correct. The sudden surge in popularity caused inexperienced owners to get these dogs and also caused an influx of backyard breeders who took advantage of the breed’s popularity and produced these dogs with little care for their health and temperament. It led to unstable dogs with awful temperaments and poor health. It’s why there’s the belief that Dalmatians are prone to aggression (and let’s be honest, if Dalmatians were a more intimidating breed the media would’ve jumped all over it, and Dalmatians would’ve been added to the list of “evil dog breeds of the decade”).

Thank you for sharing this. It resonates with a foundational truth of analysis and depth that is uncommon. This is why the POD is so different from normal people. Joel's insights and considerations of things in depth draws the great thinkers to share their insights and I glean so much from listening the podcast and reading comments like yours, which educate in a very sound way. This happens with every breed that gets “popular” from goldens to frenchies the breeds get destroyed. You could blame it on unethical breeders but also ignorant buyers who create the demand. Beware buying any popular breed it will take a lot of due diligence to avoid the bad breeders. And people never buy from a pet store.

I have a 1-year-old Dalmatian/ German Shepherd mix. He is quite protective, very vocal, high-energy, and the first of my dogs to growl/ bark when people approach. He especially doesn't like kids for some reason. He has been well socialized and been going to training and group play sessions since he was 8 weeks. He LOVES other dogs but is 50/50 when it comes to people. My older German Shepherd/ Malamute mix is the sweetest to everyone and everything. I feel like it really is the Dalmatian in my 1-year-old that makes him a little more standoffish. Love him so much and he is super smart, but we have to work on how he greets people. Trying to do so slowly and with patience because I tend to get anxious or feel overwhelmed when he starts barking, whining, etc. in public.
@blueflare3848

I can almost guarantee it’s because of both breeds. Dalmatians can be aloof towards strangers and protective towards family, but German Shepherds are the exact same way, being a guardian breed. When you combine two breeds that are prone to being aloof towards strangers then it’s pretty much a guarantee that the dog is going to be stand-offish with people. Meanwhile my Dalmatian mix is a big wuss. She’s a little nervous around strangers, but overall friendly. The worst she’ll do is bark when she’s scared or overwhelmed. Definitely doesn’t have the aloofness of a Dalmatian (I think it’s because of the Chihuahua in her. The whole 19%).

I had a dalmation as a kid. She was wild. Dog aggressive. So much energy. She would jump up on stove and stand up on her hind legs to open the cabinets way up high. Then she'd pull out the paper goods and tear it all up. Also she could open the refrigerator and would tear up ketchup packets all over the carpet. She had a false pregnancy and stole my pound puppies toys. She would growl at me if I tried to take them back. She hated certain people and would turn into a raging beast if they tried to come around. If I had to be firm with her or I did something that ticked her off, she'd poop outside my bedroom door in the middle of the night. So many stories about that dog. She died at 3 years old post bladder surgery.

Yay! Team Dalmatian here with 2 of my own and so excited to see them featured! Everyone knows me as the Dalmatian lady 😂 While they have energy and exercise needs that make them not ideal for every family, I would love to see them make a comeback! They are rare and I get so excited every time I meet someone else who owns one. They are some of the BEST, most LOYAL dogs. Not to mention beautiful. Protective when they need to be, active and athletic, and can be cuddle bugs at the end of the day. I highly recommend getting to know the breed! During the time of 101 Dalmatians, they became very popular and were overbred by people not focused on temperament. That was back in the 90s though and I would say a well bred Dalmatian these days should not display signs of aggression. They can be “aloof” with strangers, but should not be aggressive. They got a bad rap because of the movies, but the breed is recovering from that stigma. Be careful of any Dalmatian bred by the Amish or puppy mills. I think any poorly bred or poorly raised Dalmatian could be at risk of developing aggression issues - just like any other breed. But if you have the time and energy to invest in training and socialization, you’ll have an amazing dog. They can suffer from deafness and urinary issues, so anyone looking for one should be careful to have them tested for both health issues. If they are HUA (high Uric acid), they will be prone to forming stones and will require a specialized diet and attentive care. Deaf dogs can also in general be prone to aggression, so this may contribute to the stigma of Dalmatians being aggressive. But once again, a well trained deaf dog can be a great companion! Happy to answer any questions about the breed for anyone!

I just love the attitude. It's infectious. Whether or not I may do some things differently, the empowerment and confidence you give owners in person or online is something unique and something a human therapist could never teach you 😂 Just the way you keep confident but calm, really helps to transfer that to the owners. I do like the balance between focus on dog and owner. Most trainers are strongly ownercentric, pr extremely dogcentric. You move that needle based on the human and the dog presented.

SMH I think Joel's right about dog people, they can be arse holes, very dry....I've also seen them bloom once they learn to love a human, they tend not to take things as seriously after learning human, seriously! 😂 It's okay guys, 65 is old...that's me and there just isn't any turning back...😂 Good thing I found my sense of humor! I'm not a trainer. I've had 2 dogs if my own at the same time now down to 1. I've trained my dogs by myself for the most part and with I guess a helper dog. First dog was around my buddies dog a lot and she was pretty well trained to stay around etc and then my current dog was semi trained by my first one then obviously by me. Lot of time spent, repetition different situations, people dogs etc. just out in public really. I was probably doing a lot of what Joel teaches and talks about before I knew of him and his techniques, I just didn't know it. I just didn't want an asshole dog so I corrected, intervened if needed etc. it's really all inclusive imo. If you search the area for trainers I know of a few, 1 of which is just down the street from me. I've noticed some of the ones advertised require E-collar for their programs which to me is sort of a red flag. Now if you want to have your dog trained that way then I'd look for references because if not done right it may screw up your dog depending on your situation and your dogs issues perse. There's a gal that I believe mainly does clicker training that worked with a Pit I rescued running my neighborhood and she got him adopted out after working with him. I'm fairly confident he had some training prior because though he looked menacing he wasn't, walked well and wasn't aggressive which is why I think he was dumped. There's a training center about 1/2 mile from me also, likely +R based. Sorry for the novel but I'd say do your research and ask for references before deciding what you need.

What's good about the BDT channel... 1) I like that you get right to it. Some channels give a five minute history of grass before they tell you how to repair a lawn mower. Brevity shows respect for the time of your audience. 2) Of course you're doing a lot of things right but the way it's presented is based in common sense and you explain it really well. For example I like Caesar Milan okay but he doesn't explain the nuts and bolts nearly as well as you do. 3) Another thing is that you use Prince quite a bit and you explain how and why he's effective. 4) I like how you openly talk about the cost of dog training and how additional training time might be a waste of money. What I don't like... 1) I don't like when you defend yourself against chumps. Unless it's a valid criticism, who really cares? Like those mind-numbingly STUPID people who say stuff like "Take the muzzle off that Malinois and then it'll be a fair fight." Just post and ghost, like Joe Rogan. LOL Your time (and our time) is too valuable to try and defend yourself against stupid sh&t, plus the people that post that stuff will just focus on something else. 2) I would probably delete the killer whale stuff. It doesn't bother me but it's become a sore subject with a lot of people ever since Blackfish came out.

She switches to crazy so fast I can’t get to her in time to prevent the hit. I’m wondering about an e-collar, but I have had very little success having it work through her fur. Any recommendations?

I'd start with a long line before an E-collar. If you can tell about when she's gonna do it, which I assume is very similar each occasion try to break her focus or get to her right then if not then you've got the long line as back up if you can't catch a dog in the air like Joel does lol. Then you can stop the behavior before your other dog gets hurt potentially and get the correction more towards the unwanted behavior timing wise.

@@rptrick79 I'm not sure she would get to that state of mind on a long line, unless it was a realllly long line. She gets all worked up running around. I do get about 10 seconds of lead up to it though, but I've never been able to get in between them in time. I do realise the best thing is me correcting her right before she does it, but I just haven't been able to. Thank you for your advice. I will give that a try and see how it goes. It's such an unacceptable thing to do, I really need to train it out of her. 😮‍💨

@@Altt try a loud "HEY" or whatever word you choose. Just say it like you mean business for a marker, if you get that WTF look/ pause then go grab her? Just follow through. I know it's all dependent on situation etc but if you don't have that really long line I'd try that while stalking her as you see it coming. Let her know you're omnipresent and watching til you can catch her in the act

Thank you for commenting (doesn't always work with the algos) It might be a good idea to incorporate loud quick popping sound like a clap, cap gun (if they still make those) or even a starting pistol after yelling "Hey" (if you can't get his attention with yelling hey), something quick and poppy that is sure to draw his attention immediately and then you can do "The Terminator" walk towards him for the correction.

@@underduress5761 That's a good idea, but unfortunately the smaller dog in question would be scared to death of that. She's terrified of the outdoors as it is. It probably sounds like I'm making excuses. 😅

My Doberman mix adoptee was likely neutered as a fully grown adult in the shelter system, and he still marks outside in response to other dog pee and also licks pee from time to time (more so the pee from my unaltered female Blue Heeler mix, even when she's not in heat). He still sniffs my female when she's in heat; he just doesn't have a mating drive accompanied with that behavior. He can be territorial in a small space, especially if he's already in an excited state or if a blindsided, unexpected dog encounter happens. If anyone thinks that neutering a pet will significantly change behavior, this is a myth and the wrong reason for doing it.

True! Mostly all the reasons for neutering can be refuted but changing behavior is proven to be a failure time after time. Particularly things like humping and aggression which often get worse. It’s often a bad remedy for poor ownership/relationship.
