Who else could carry the role with such panache and authority?

Nice, but why does Dame Kiri keep pronouncing "Leont-ah-i-ne", while everyone else on earth says "Leonteene" ?

maybe it is a new zealand affectation of it's pronunciation...

Why do Americans say Novak Joke-a-vitch, when the rest of the world says Novak Djok-a-vitch? It's an American affectation to prefer long vowel sounds over short vowel sounds. We shouldn't get too precious about things like that.

O sure ! That's certainly not the most important issue around ! But as English is not my native language, I was just wondering... Thanks

That opera is terrible, you can't humm 6 notes from it. PRICE the great, should have sung either of her bread and butter Leonoras for the opening.

The point at that time was commissioning an original American work for the opening of the new home for the premier American opera house in the country. It also gave Ms. Price something rare in contemporary opera, a chance to originate an operatic role. It was also marketing, to cast Ms. Price as Cleopatra, as many thought at the time that she should be played by a Black woman, although the real Cleo was more Greek than anything. I too prefer "Il Trovatore" but the I think they were working against the idea of something safe and something that gave the appearance of cutting edge, sophistication. In my opinion, "Trovatore" is actually the cutting edge, surprising piece 167 years later. And yet, I think this was the perfect choice to open the new Met.

@@chocolatesouljah I understand your point. BUT, that wasn't an Opera for Leontyne, it was a vocal warm-up. MILLIONS of dollars were spent on a piece that hasn't been revived in 55 years and counting. PRICE is an extraordinary human being who did a favor for a friend who is not named Giuseppe Verdi. I saw La Belle Epoque de La PRICE at the Metropolitan, HER house.

@@MrQbenDanny Hello, there. I saw Ms. Price at the San Francisco opera house in the 70s and early 80s. She was a spectacular and unforgettable presence. All I'm saying is I get why they did what they did at the time. And "Il Trovatore" is better.

Those costumes are - to put it mildly - hideous. Was Zeffirelli making fun of himself? Was it some sort of ironic self parody? No, probably not, I doubt Zeffirelli would've been capable of that.

They wanted something american for the opening night.A very bad choice. It was a flop.Intellectual? Modern? No melodies?nobody finally loved this...opera.Normally with her intelligence & firm technique ,Price(with the exception of Fanciulla),didn't do a lot of ..mistakes.The costume was too..heavy .In every point of view. Sorry ,but at the end seems ..like a drag show😕

Pythia Delphi wrong. Its a flawed score, but its full of beautiful melodies. The main problem was the production by Cecil B. Zeffirelli.

Leontyne`s costume is positively hideous. After his wonderful and naturalistic productions for Covent Garden and La Scala in the early 60`s, he went totally over the top for this and other Met. efforts which tarnished his reputation.
