Her vocal spin, throat tilt and tone are just gorgeously produced. The song is very Puccinian. The entire effect is magical and full of yearning.

I do prefer Dame Kiri's voice to Sarah Brightman She sang without drama so the beauty of her voice came through.
@baritonebynight3 жыл бұрын
They are simply two different kinds of artists. Dame Kiri is one of the greatest singers in the world and set the gold standard for generations to come. Now retired from public performance, she is teaching the next generation of classical singers. Sarah Brightman, though a decent singer, does not have the technical command over her instrument that only comes from years and years of training and hard work that Dame Kiri went through. Could Dame Kiri sing Christine? Yes. Easily. Could Sarah Brightman sing the Marschallin? Not bloody likely......

Sarah does that weird thing with her mouth that makes me think of choir boys made from china. Voice and presentation nowhere near Kiri's level. Apples to oranges.

I do not like musicals anymore so I would not know. I just knew it was supposed to be in the sequel and ALW changed his mind. Since I do not listen to ALW music again I would not know. I knew it went into another musical. The one time I heard the song with the new lyrics was at one of the 9/11 benefits/memorials in 2001. I recognized the tune, but the new lyrics were not good.

Glenn Close may have received more rapturous applause at the event, but with this performance Kiri should have left no one in any doubt who is the greatest soprano of the modern era. That last high note in the happy to you shook the cobwebs out of every corner of the auditorium. Breathtaking.

I don’t think people were expecting Glenn to be that good, though, whereas they knew Kiri is an opera star.

I’m not sure...I was thinking the audience was comprised mainly of fans of musical theater, and were perhaps unappreciative of the brilliance of Kiri Te Kanawa in her field.
@baritonebynight3 жыл бұрын
Opera singers are oftentimes only popular with classical music fans. I don't get it when some young pre teen girl (a la Charlotte Church or jackie evanchoo) manipulates her instrument to imitate a mature women and the public calls them an 'angel" and goes wild. Here you have Dame Kiri Te Kanawa at the height of her powers and the non classical public doesn't even know who she is. I was once told by a world class singer "Nobody knows me outside of New York.....I went to a store once and used my credit card and the clerk said "you know you have the same name as this really famous singer!"
@Maya-bu2rf2 жыл бұрын
I think it is the song. Glenn sang a song from a musical she was in, and Kiri's song at that time was one only heard for the first time that night. (Then it was not used for the musical it was intended for) Lyrics were changed for another musical.
@UncleZama2 жыл бұрын
1) There is no comparison. Kiri is an opera icon and Glenn is a musical theater icon. 2) Glenn sang a popular song that people know from a show she is known for. Kiri sang a less known song. 3) Kiri sang (greatly at that) and Glenn acted and sang her bit. A "full-on performance". All in all, they both gave smashing performances.

Whether this song is performed as "The Heart is Slow to Learn" or "Our Kind of Love" from ALW's show "The Beautiful Game" or penultimately as "Love Never Dies" from the musical of the same name, what remains true is Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a most exquisite piece of music that has, from this very introductory performance, deeply resonated in my heart and soul. No matter what others think or feel about this music, it has made an indelible mark in my heart and is the single most meaningful, important, and powerfully beautiful piece of music that has forever changed my life. Beautiful song and Kiri's rendition. I was shocked when I discovered he had plagiarized the main theme from an award winning Hollywood movie called The Apartment (check it out, Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine). Of course he also had to pay big bucks to the Puccini Foundation for stealing a big theme from Puccini's La Fanciulla Del West for the Phantom duet. Composers do this sometimes, but usually never so blatantly. Probably thought this one wouldn't be noticed. I noticed! If you google him you'll find there are lots more allegations.

Beautiful, this is from Lloyd Webber's follow up to "Phantom", "Love Never Dies". I think it takes a true opera singer to do justice to much of his music, they always sing the soprano roles much better than the stars who play the part on musical theatre stage. Most are too young with voices still too weak and thin to fully give power to the songs. This show, was produced on stage in Australia, I have the video and thought all the music was amazing.

This soprano "artist" is justly labeled as such, but can we say the same for Lloyd-Weber? Check out the music to "The Apartment" and then listen to "The heart is slow to learn". the former was by Adolf Deutsch and the latter by ALW with a little help from Puccini and "Un bel di". All not as obvious perhaps as his lifting "Music of the Night" from La Fanciulla del West". Hey, but it's not grand theft! Lloyd Weber is a successful petty thief.
