Thanks for taking us to see Margaret Rutherford's resting place and also that of her husband Stringer Davis. The grave is beautifully tended, sadly a thing rarely seen for other notables. I do know that she came to acting quite late in life, which is a shame as I'd love to have seen her in more roles. She was such a joy, such a breath of fresh air. I loved Dame Margaret as Madam Arcarty her eccentricities were apposite for this role, scatty and forgetful, and all mixed up with the spirits. Fully deserving of her epitaph, A Blithe Spirit.

I saw her once at London lighthouse in the 80s. There was three of us saw her. She passed us all blustery and we all were pontificating over how great it was to see her... years later I looked her up to explain who she was to someone. She'd been dead for years when we saw her... Make of that what you will..

Thanks, Paul for taking the trouble to find Margaret's grave. I always loved her work, and had the pleasure of meeting her in her dressing room at Chichester in 1966 during the interval of "The Clandestone Marriage". Stringer was there also. She was delightful and patient at the idea of two snivelling youths invading her space, and she kindly signed my programme. RIP.

What a wonderful treat….I used to work in a hairdresser in Gerrards Cross when I was 13….Margaret Rutherford was a regular client and I was allowed to wash her hair. She was lovely and her husband ‘Stringer’ always brought her in and kissed her hand when he left her. On his return he always threw up his hands and said..’oh my darling, you look like a million dollars’ they were a joy. Later I worked in a film company in Gerrards Cross and my boss bought her house and I used to go and babysit for him there. I also went to St James church to watch Lulu marry one of the Bee Gees…happy days..thanks for the memories x

There is a lovely story told by the late composer/ conductor/harpsichordist Raymond Leppard about her. He had written a sort of musical play and she was one of the stars . In one scene she had to sit in a small boat on stage and pretend to row it. During a rehersal she was sat in this boat thing and it toppled over towards the rear of the stage taking Margaret with it! Anyway everyone got up out of their seats and made their way to the stage to see if she was alright. The next thing they saw was Margaret's head appear from behind the upturned boat, she did her famous " double chin wobble" then looked at everyone and then said in her own equally famous quiet but rather posh voice "Splash!" Does anyone remember seeing a biopic of her life "For One Night Only" starring Timothy Spall (In drag!) as Margaret? Of course Spall , who is such a fantastic actor, was brilliant as her.
@angietunstall25552 жыл бұрын
No, I didn't see the piece with Timothy Spall as Margaret Rutherford! How I missed that, I don't know, as I rate Timothy very highly; he's never been in anything rubbish. Loved his Boogie Up the River series with himself, his wife and Boogie, his dog 🐕 How long ago was it on?
@carolineolsenarnold70392 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. Do you know how I can watch For one night only? Haven’t heard of it, and I love Timothy Spall.

Hi Margaret the problem with gloss finished headstones are they cause havoc with camera shots I think its either myself or the guy carrying all the bags, well I hope so, or maybe not, who knows, Hope your keeping well, Paul

Believe she lived in a apartment and a couple of houses at Gerrard's cross one next to the hotel in the centre when she moved to the area and finally a place at Chalfont st Peter. Denim the next village across was where miss Marples house was for the film's, a village that Rodger Moore, Cilla Black and John Mills had all moved into in 1970, I believe Lewis Collins parents lived there too opposite the nightclub.
