Katas can be very useful as they are forms to attack multiple fighters. I just wish most of you were taught the way I was taught old school. Where the instructors would pretend to attack and another with counter attack with the Kata. It allows you to see the effectiveness and reason for each katas movements

The kata’s are made to automatize a sequence of movements. It is done through repetition and it makes it faster to unconsciously defend yourself in a fight, as you’ve already automatized that movement(s). Of course there are specific movements or postures that are not used in fights, but that’s the exact difference between just fighting techniques and an actual martial art. Martial arts like karate or kung fu also envolve culture and philosophy and doing such things as kata’s are a way to focuse on yourself, meditate and live the martial art in its entirety. It’s not all about fighting in these styles. Besides, of course you don’t see the application of kata in fights, because what you have more access to is tournaments and competitions. The application of kata are mainly for self defense and daily situations, not for sport. If all you want is to learn how to break someone’s bones, hurt, and maybe even kill if necessary, look for krav maga, boxe and those kinds of fighting styles. A good karate practitioner can also do all of that, but also learn about the culture, the origin and the philosophy behind his martial art, and kata is a good way to do that.
