" You give me miles and miles of mountains, and I ask for the sea." Damn straight! What a poetic way of describing when love that was good goes bad....
@randomniche1345
@randomniche1345 7 жыл бұрын
i believe that line means that even tho she gives him this kind go love (mountains) and while it is not bad and all, it's just not what he wants, they both want different things hence he's asking for something else (the sea)

I'd just like to add my interpretation to the conversation. I think it is about love gone bad, but not because either person stopped caring or because they want the next thing. I think it's about two people who just cannot fulfill each others needs no matter how hard they try. Giving someone miles and miles of mountains seems to imply they are trying desperately to make their partner happy, but they ask for the sea, meaning they need something completely different than what is being offered. Even though what is being offered is actually quite a lot and probably requires a lot of effort and possibly even love, it just isn't what that person needs to be happy. I think that makes it even more tragic. It's not about someone losing interest in the relationship; it's about two people who keep trying and failing to make each other happy. Anyway, that's just my interpretation.

[Verse 1: Damien Rice] Don't hold yourself like that You'll hurt your knees Well I kissed your mouth and back But that's all I need Don't build your world around Volcanoes melt you down [Chorus: Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan] What I am to you is not real What I am to you, you do not need What I am to you is not what you mean to me You give me miles and miles of mountains And I'll ask for the sea [Verse 2: Lisa Hannigan] Don't throw yourself like that In front of me I kissed your mouth, your back Is that all you need? +Andrew Park she is an alto. he is a tenor. they both ate amazing. but technically his range and pitch are more valuable. and he hits falsetto without a drop in vocal integrity. as a singer myself. I can attest to how hard that is to do. he's got a fantastic control over his voice. can be attained with enough practice by anyone with talent vocally, but most never get there. notice how when she goes high you can hear her volume drop, this is not on purpose or meant to be. it's because she struggles to get on top of the note. she's got a beautiful voice. Not saying she doesn't. but he is better.

I think they are deeply in love with each other. However, the difference in their age is creating different “needs” from both. I think it’s about maturity and ultimately letting her go..... because he realizes she has to live and experience life, so they can hopefully be on the same page some day. He doesn’t want to let her go, he does it for her. Love ❤️ this song

the best part of damien rice is that he doesn't write about love in the same fluffy way that most other singers do. he represents it in a really different light, which is something i really enjoy from him. when everyone else is singing about love more directly and really sexual, or just fluffed up... damien is singing about love when it's just raw and natural. there's no glam behind it and it's not done up. it's about the components of love and not just love itself, you know? he does it differently than everyone else. not just in the lyrical department, either. the strings and the piano are used a lot in his songs, and i admire it, because no matter what those two instruments will always be the most soothing for me instead of what i usually hear. i don't know i just really love damien rice thank you for reading this huge block of text tldr damien sings about love 'raw' rather than 'glam' and his use of instruments is calming. inb4 "pop is ok too sometimes" it sure is but i prefer this. have your own taste if you want

I've been noticing lately that the majority of my favorite songs have that same essence to them. That rawness you can't quite put your finger on...that really hits the feels. A lot of them also have cello & piano too, actually. Re Damien...I feel like he kinda lost a lot when Lisa Flannigan stopped working with him. Such incredible harmonies. Her voice is something really special, feels Ike it brought out the honesty & truth even more.

Then, you should expose everyone in your life with it at least once. Not everyone will like it. And that's OK. But if you introduce 100 people to a song that you love, and there's only one person likes it... then HELL YEAH... Mission Accomplished! There's that bond. They will always think about you when they hear it. They will play it for their other friends. One of them is likely to latch onto the song too. That's the beauty of how music works. MUSIC IS A TIME MACHINE!

Saw him in Chicago about a decade ago. It was his first time in America in like 15 years or something and I somehow snagged a couple tickets Athenaeum Theatre knowing I wanted to see him, but didn't have the second ticket planned out. Maybe I'd be dating someone by then and it'd be a great experience to share with them explaining how Damien Rice is like a lot of Irish folk (American Irish count too. We earned our alcoholic reputations and I think we can all agree trauma is generational). It was years after Lisa Hannigan and him stopped singing together and right around the release of My Favorite Faded Fantasy and given most of my favorite songs (Volcano is my top still) were dueted with them, I didn't know what to expect. But the concert date shows up, also around my birthday, I'm still single, so I bring my buddies who somehow both knew who Damien Rice was. The first night, he was sick and his throat wasn't working right, so he cancelled the show after a few songs and they rescheduled the show. My first buddy couldn't make it to the reschedule, which was a month later. Knowing handcuff season had passed and it would be a cold December, I brought my other buddy and Damien Rice came back stronger than ever and I got to see Damien Rice twice. He still played I Remember, which I never thought I'd hear him sing alone, and it still haunts me to this day. So I listen to Volcano instead lmao.

Don't hold yourself like that You'll hurt your knees I kissed your mouth and back But that's all I need Don't build your world around volcanoes melt you down What I am to you is not real What I am to you you do not need What I am to you is not what you mean to me You give me miles and miles of mountains And I'll ask for the sea Don't throw yourself like that In front of me I kissed your mouth your back Is that all you need? Don't drag my love around volcanoes melt me down What I am to you is not real What I am to you you do not need What I am to you is not what you mean to me You give me miles and miles of mountains And I'll ask for what I give to you Is just what i'm going through This is nothing new No no just another phase of finding what I really need Is what makes me bleed And like a new disease she's still too young to treat Volcanoes melt me down She's still too young I kissed your mouth You do not need me

I remember way back when this album came out, before social media was really a big thing, back when mobiles had to make do with WAP, and network chatrooms were where it was at, and the 02 chatrooms were where I hung out back then. I heard Volcano on Jo Whiley one evening and instantly bought the album and as many did, totally fell in love with it, yet all my friends in real life hated Mr Rice. One evening in the chatrooms, Aimie told me she was listening to some music, after quizzing her on the artist, she told me it was Damien rice, and from that moment on, we became friends. Now almost 20 years later, we still keep in touch, despite all that life has thrown at us in the past few years, this year being particularly tough for me personally, its always quality music like this, and a close friend, who gets you through shit.

For me they come as a pair. Yes DR put LH in the spotlight but she owes him NOTHING. THEY NEED TO REUNITE and give us more of this sweet music. This world would be a better place with them together. There's lots to love individually but everything to love when they sing together. ÉIRE ABÚ

This album has been a huge part of my life since I was a baby, with my mother playing these songs to soothe me to sleep on restless nights. And it’s chilling, yet relaxed tones set me in such a pleasant mood, bringing me happy memories of childhood and how close to my heart this is.
