Part 1: • Damion Hall on Being A...
--------
In this clip, Damion Hall recounted how he was tasked with reuniting 'Guy.' He detailed going to Virginia Beach and linking with Teddy Riley and using the music they made together to entice Aaron to fly out and join them in the studio. Damion explained how the last 'Guy' album was created and why he is singing more lead on the third album as opposed to the first two.

"Your brother and good friend." I like how Damion corrected him. "My brother and my brother." Period. You don't last as long as groups like Guy, New Edition, The Temptations , Blue Magic etc. without there being some sort of brotherhood. All the groups I've mentioned have had falling outs, but have come together again. They generally love one another. And that's what Damion is saying as to why he'd do another Guy album. He loves those other two guys. ( pun intended) And I totally get that type of devotion and fidelity.

Back in the summer of 1988 as a 14 year old on Chicago's west side, I wish I had a quarter for everytime I heard Guy's 'Goodbye Love', 'Piece Of My Love', 'Groove Me' around the neighborhood. I thought it was cool. But I was more into sports and Guy just kinda went over my head. But one night in 1991 a friend was giving several of us a lift home. And on the radio this love song came on: Sweetheart, I've been tryin' so hard to get over you Just simply can't 'Cause the love we shared through the years Meant so much to me All I'm lookin' for is just a serious relationship Someone I can hold all my life Why don't you give me that commitment Let's settle down I asked my friend "Who is this?" He answered "That's Guy!" I was like really? I went on to buy their first cassette and The Future. I have fond memories of wearing those tapes out and listening to Al B. Sure!, New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe. Great memories!

Who the hell is this guy interviewing? Stop trying to fast foward the story. Who who cares about the interest of time? Thats what editing is for. This dude tone is also very abrasive, cock, and extra they entire video. Why are you constantly asking about paperwork so you can have the " I got you moment." Trying to prove artist don't take care of business. Thats been entailed. You are there to get the story not be the story. We don't care that you were a record executive. Obviously that didn't work out to well because you work for VLAD now doing interviews. Just ask the questions in a way that can let this man tell his story in his own words.

Great interview, loved it. But this made me go back and listen to The Guy 3 album. After listening to it, this album clearly is not a Guy album. This sounds like Blackstreet music. The Future is my joint. There was heart and feelings in that album.. Guy 3 sounds rushed and just feels cold. Didn't do much for me. Kinda like how Jodeci's last effort was cold as ice. No feelings or heart put into it like the previous joints. But I miss Guy. It would be nice to pull the trigger on a 4th album and bring that real rnb back.

@kdbyers I loved Jodeci, but you are absolutely right about that 4th Jodeci album. I was sooooooo disappointed in it. Only 2 tracks even sounded remotely like Jodeci music ("Checkin" for You and "Incredible"). JoJo's voice sounded totally different and not in a good way. I hated that because he sang lead on my favourite Jodeci song, "What About Us". 😭😭

A lot of the songs were taken from an unreleased 911 album... even has some of their background vocals. Rushed and not collaborative. But I will say their are a few gems on there. Dancin, Keep me from my baby, love online (cheesy yes but vocal arrangement). The songs need to be from scratch for Guy for a fourth album, but not sure that could ever be a possibility these days.

This is a very powerful interview personally he can’t say as much as he would like to say based on each and everyone’s character in the group and personality. But he is definitely telling his truth and what he feels I think a lot of people should listen to this interview and appreciate it. We’ve heard nothing from Aaron Hall except for in the beginning. And if you know Teddy Riley Teddy could be in competition with anybody even his own shadow. When you’re dealing with personalities like that and then on top of that someone is in your ear telling you untruthful things you would be happy the guy ended the way they did because it’s a Phenomenal group. And on top of the Jean Griffin situation Jean was worse than Suge knight let’s just speak it and bring it to the light sad to say if you happen to be on any one of those tours in those days that’s why the group really broke up no one wanna be bullied in this industry by a group of professionals you look up to and put your whole life into the hands. Seems like Aaron was a bit of a narcissist, Teddy a musical perfectionist, Damien just not ego based enough for the industry. Thank you for the music you made, timeless!

I saw Guy in 2016… they killed it. They came on after Raheem Devaughn and before Musiq Soulchild. Guy went so hard that we were exhausted lol. It was a party. Aaron looked great. I’d go see them anytime.
