Keisuke has an amazing range of sounds he can make low gutturals, clean, high screams, pig squeals and whistle tones that sound like computer game effects. The thing is you need to listen to about 4 or 5 songs to get a good idea of the range.

@@goner.9989 I know that they've left visual kei behind and nothing wrong with the effort of being a heavier and good metalcore band. DEVILOOF!!!! So many underappreciated vocalists from Japan
@yarnking3401 Жыл бұрын
Not only is Keisuke a great vocalist but he managed to make his new braces part of his 'dark' outfit 😅. I also think there's something to languages helping certain vocalists develop in certain tones than others. For example it seems many Japanese vocalists hit higher notes than say American vocalists. I wonder if that has to do with Japanese being a more nasal language than English?

In that first vocal line that was hard to explain, it's contradictory to itself for sure, but the explanation for that is kinda simple. It starts off with a mid-range fry, but you use less space in the mouth instead of more, and focus on your tongue placement. It's a gradual shift from an A vowel to the E vowel, which gives it the upward inflection. Its close to how vocalists go from the I vowel to the A vowel naturally when they release their sustain in old screamo bands from the 2000's like Spencer Chamberlain when he was with Underoath.

Though this isn't strictly my hypothesis (and I frankly can't recall where I read it, unfortunately) my understanding is that at least some portion of the unique vocal differences in Japanese singing (especially in metal) are a result of the average Japanese palate being notably shallower and wider than even some other Asian demographics. This is also one of the reasons why so many Japanese folks struggle trying to learn and pronounce words from European languages and vice-versa. Specifically, it's much more difficult for the average white d00d to reliably pull off the rolled "R" sound that's present in a variety of Japanese dialects. Though, of course, these are all generalities and will not be applicable to *all* people from one demographic or another. Also: There's a whole wad of excellent bands out there if you ever felt like diving further down the VK rabbit hole. I'd recommend Dir en Grey (obviously), Vampillia (their collaborations with Jun Togawa and BiS are neat) and Maximum the Hormone ('cause why not). More specifically, I suppose I'd recommend Dir en Grey's performance of Decayed Crow from Tour2011 AGE QUOD AGIS or World of Mercy from The World You Live in [Behind Closed Doors]. I've seen them live five times and their vocalist, Kyo, is a fucking weapon. And, also, best shriek goblin.
