Very nice! I have owned just about every wavetable synth since the Waldorf Microwave II, but nothing resonated with me until the 3rd Wave. It is such an amazing synth. It's the wavetable synth I was always looking for and so much more. And with all the updates, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

Well, that was beautiful! I have owned a 3rd Wave since it first became available, it continues to delight (and surprise) me to this day. The VA side of it is so amazing I have held off getting any of the recent polyanalogs (P10, OB-X8, Nina) because I just don't feel the need (okay, I am interested in checking out the PolyBrute 12...but they need to do a Noir version).
@JohnnyADi
@JohnnyADi 6 ай бұрын
I wanted to get a poly brute 12 or super gemini too but decided the 3rd wave is equal to or better in every way. P10 is obsolete, the 3rd wave has the exact same filters and same vintage mode. Obx8 I'd rather just use an oberheim filter and pair it with a 3rd wave. What does the obx8 that the third wave doesn't? Absolutely nothing. Just get the oberheim plugin from GeForce, it sounds more oberheim than the obx8 excluding sound quality, but at least it's the best oberheim sound I've heard from a plugin. Nina is only for the motorized encoders that's it's whole gimmick. It's everything the moog one wants to be. Add any external filter and bypass the 3rd waves filter, done. And the best part? It's smaller than all of the competitors if you just get the desktop version. Pair it with an osmose expressive e or roli lumi and a expressive e touchee and boom there's the polybrute morphee, + polybrute and super geminis keybed. I'm going to ask them to support the touchee and a ribbon controller. Just buy authentic oberheim moog and steiner filters.

@@JohnnyADiI have an obsolete P10 above my 3rd wave and I only have to touch a key to hear the difference. P10 has more limited but ballsy vintage sound. Different synths for different applications. Use your ears, don’t just read specs.
@JohnnyADi
@JohnnyADi 6 ай бұрын
It's been proven to match a prophet 6 1 to 1 based on the identical tone but not sound cause of its digital oscillators, and has a slight digital artifact of not being milky smooth. With tweaking you can match a prophet 10, the 3rd wave has the brightest sound of any modern synth made that isn't a remake. The obx8 and P10 sound bright asf at the top end and no recreation like the ubxa does that. The digital filter is a digital sem that actually reaches all the way up to the very high frequencies and does it accurately, so does the prophet filter. Plus it's resonance compensation is better than a real prophet. Plus it's a million times more powerful of an instrument. And it doesnt go out of tune, and with an analog eq to give it a slight lift, you can get the same punch and cutting nature of the prophet rev 4 sound. The detune mode is literally made by the same guy who programed the sequential one, not just by the guy at groove but the guy who actually invented that technique of vintage mode that also worked with Arturia. So what exactly is audible difference, because ballsy isn't descriptive.

@@JohnnyADiYou sound like you are trying to convince yourself? I have the synths next to each other and they have a different feel. Of course objectively the 3rd Wave has a lot more to offer and also sounds very good. I don’t however think it has the instant powerful sound of the P10, not even with the virtual analog oscillators. I wouldn’t have bought both if I thought they sounded similar. Of course you can mimic the Prophet on the 3rd Wave but seldom duplicate it. Even more that applies to the OB-X8 which really is the most vintage fat sounding modern synth. It is instantly apparent when playing it.

I've kinda 'avoided' listening to any reviews of this synth because: 1) It's way, WAY out of my price range; and 2) I've never really been blown away by any PPG-derived wavetable synths. I know point 2 will raise eyebrows amongst many a wavetable cognoscenti but each to his own. However... I had 5 minutes to kill as I was brushing my teeth and thought, "Hell, why not?". Now I need to understand how I'm going to find a serious amount of cash! More seriously, @starskycarr, that was impressive! It has to be one of your best demo tracks to-date!

I think this is better than a super gemini 100%. Should be able to recreate the same sounds, only non sequential synth in the world with a 2040 or 2140 filter if I'm not mistaken. Can recreate the moog one with a moogerfooger mf 101 pedal id assume. More powerful than the poly brute 12. Only thing it's missing are motorized encoders. Because it's digital at the core with a screen they can add unlimited things. Analog synth killer.

Been wanting a PPG wave for so long, but idk If I can justify 5k for it. I get that they are a small company, but damn. If anyone is really longing for something similar, its rumored that Behringer is working on a PPG clone atm. That of course will never come close to this though, as the key to this synth is you're feeding digital WTs into SEM filters.

@StarskyCarr now that you've had some time to play around with the keyboard version, do you find there is a big difference in how that you use it with the additional knobs, larger buttons etc? I have a desktop and like it well enough that have considered getting the keyboard version but can't justify it only for the keybed. You mentioned falling in love with the keyboard version at Superbooth so was wondering if you felt the keyboard version made a substantial difference in how you use it?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 ай бұрын
I don't think the keyboard version makes any difference at all to how I use it, there are even a few things I prefer on the desktop - like selecting the oscillators. I'm slightly regretting the purchase because I'm stuck for space - but not really ;)

That'll happen but worse in 30+ years. Very dissapointed with the ub-xa, horrible drift mode. Loses the high end bright sound and frequencies of the original instrument and sounds more like a software plugin. I love that it has 16 voices but it will never beat the sound of the more expensive obx8 in modern times or the vintage oberheims. The take 5 also sounds better. Groove synthesis is #1, they use artuira and sequentials detune mode which sounds one to one with vintage prophets on their rev 4 prophet 5/10. UDO super gemini also has a bad drift mode like behringer and sounds more like a software plugin than analog. And all the other features they and the community want to add. No behringer will ever do that because none of them have a fleshed out ui system for massive updates. 3rd wave + Korg Kronos is the best combination. You have every range of sound and capability. If you want even more get the gravity software plugin. Just buy hardware filters and slap them on the 3rd wave since it can bypass its filters. It's a more flexible polybrute 12, as long as they add expressive e touchee and ribbon midi control for it, it won't be missing anything. And can recreate a moog one with a moogerfooger mf 101 ladder filter pedal. Has more polyphony and timbre than any major analog synth. Things like Roland jupiter xm and korg wavestate are outclassed by the kronos HD-1 engine.

@@wesleyforman8391 it's purely a fact that for the money, those other synths are irrelevant. The 3rd wave even if the sound isn't 100% the patches can be. All you need then is to mess with an analog eq and external filters.

Excellent composition, BUT... For those of us listening on studio monitors, what a waste! The low-end Rumphs are way, WAY too loud and the pads get drowned out by them. Mix definitely lacks clarity, and doesn't do justice to this beautiful synth.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 ай бұрын
Thanks. It’s a quick jam 🤷‍♂️ not a finished track. I put these together quickly and record raw so I’m not hiding the synth in eqs compressors and FX. I may add a little here and there but make a point for not polishing too much. This is just 5 or 6 synth lines plus some beats. The original plan was to play it all live from the synth (drums included using the sampling abilities).

@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 ай бұрын
I’ve gone for more digital tones specifically to demo them twinkling in this, although I don’t think the main pad sounds digital. And yeah you can do pretty much anything in VSTs and you could emulate most synths very closely but that’s missing the point. This does have an analog filter and saturation circuit, but whether you (or anyone else - not picking on you in particular 😂) could tell the difference is doubtful in most cases. I proved this with an analog/digital test - no one got the correct answers. This sounds great and is a lovely piece to use. Yes it’s pricey but… so are other expensive things.

it's a wavetable synth, whats wrong with digital? I bet if you heard it you'd realise making this synth in v st format would be a laughable failure. Waldorf M is the closest I guess, or a Microwave. Though I suppose not many would notcie the difference in most cases, either way it doesn;t really matter if it sounds good and this synth sounds PHENOMENAL

I've found that the 3W sounds as digital or as analog as you want it to. And yes, VSTs *can* absolutely make similar if not identical sounds. The thing for me about the 3W is just how easy and pleasurable the workflow is to get those sounds.
