I really love Jerome's facial expression when he first says 'I really didn't come here of my own accord'. It looks like he's realising it as he says it, like he's only just starting to appreciate that he's a pawn in a huge game and everything is inevitable. Eh, I'm probably overthinking it

The guy who played Pilate did the same thing for me, with that Nazi SS uniform he wore!! No, I'm not a Nazi and I hate them, but that's the way they dressed the guy up! In another vid., he's just awakened from a dream, a warning type dream. His acting just blows me away!! Recently I watched the original production of JCStar, and was also impressed by Pilate! He was a completely different Pilate in that 1970 production. This Pilate is tall and slender. He wears his straight, black hair fairly long, and he wears a golden crown in his head. He wears a luxurious velvet robe of Royal purple. There is a certain snippiness in his speech and in the way he moves. But in the Bible he was married! When I watched the 2000 production, I thought that no more dramatic and impressionistic interpretation was even possible, but the Pilate in the 1970's production showed that indeed, it could be done. Two different actors, one scene! If JCStar had not had this scene, I would probably have watched it just a few times!!

I think Judas was disappointed when he came to realize that Jesus had no interest in leading a physical army. Jesus was interested in the spiritual side of life. Judas wanted a leader who would fight to free Israel from the Roman Occupation, which was very oppressing to the Jews. He was so let down that he started to really hate Him. But he didn't want the responsibility so he turned Him in to the Jewish officials for a few silver coins. Judas felt like Jesus had betrayed him. But it was an illusion and an assumption in Judas' mind to begin with.
@Orion31014 жыл бұрын
Nancy Ayers thats... not it at all??? It’s stated so many times throughout the musical that Judas thinks Jesus has gotten far too big. That if he doesn’t act soon the Romans will crush him. He turned him into the officials to try and SAVE him, hoping that the officials would crush him and Jesus would come away with his pride hurt but his life intact. That was not what happened. And he definitely didn’t try and take the money - in this song alone he says he doesn’t want it over and over.
The one who wanted an army leader against the Romans was Simon Zaelotas, not Judas.

Also doesn't help that they've slowed down all the songs in this production, just makes it sound kinda disjointed to me. Still a mile better than the 2012 arena version in my eyes but that's not saying all that much!

For me it's the staccato line delivery. Seems quick and broken. I just don't care for it... but when he goes for it in the singing, he nails it. I don't think being French is that much of an excuse for being shrill at points. Jesus Chris Superstar is like Les Mirserable because literally every character is in a bad situation. Jesus: Knows he's gonna die. His followers just don't get him. Trying something for years only for it to fall apart. Judas: Sees trouble coming, tries to warn his best friend of it only to be ignored, tries to stop the situation only for it to turn worse. Mary: A prostitute stuck in unrequited love that is doomed to fail. Ciaphas and Annas: Two priests forced to quell a revolution in order to prevent their own destruction. Pontus Pilate: Forced to execute an innocent man who he wanted nothing to do with. Simon: Wants freedom and revolution, only to be told by his idol that it's a dumb idea. Peter: Forced into a self-fulfilling prophecy where he sends his leader down the river just to keep his own head off the chopping block. King Herod: Gets to meet his celebrity, only to discover he ain't all that.

So this is the first version of Jesus Christ Superstar I've seen. I've since seen the live NBC performance and bits of the original movie, and it seems that a LOT of people are very picky about the Judas portrayal in this movie. Now, I mean, the original was made some 30 years before I was born and I was a baby when this came out, so I've only recently been introduced to it, but I have this opinion; Yes, the original film has the first and most iconic version of Judas, but this production was not bad. His voice may not be perfect, but nobody's is. I think all three versions of Judas that I've seen were good in their own right. The original one had good acting and a good voice. This version may not have had the tone/pitch the original one, but the emotion put into their singing is (personally) what I look for, and holy crap he delivers on that. You can hear the nervousness/fear in his voice as he realizes what betraying his friend is going to mean, and begging to be assured he is safe even if he does so. The live performance was bad either, don't get me wrong, but I can't remember anything SUPER memorable from it. So, sorry for the essay, but y'all need to chill out and let this performance stand on its own. it's not the original, sure, but they tried their best. That's my two cents on the topic, and a meaningless opinion on the internet.

The reason I like the 2000 version better is because jesus and judas' relationship is WAYY better and the emotions come across a lot srtonger. In the older one there is alomst no connection between them. In the 2000 one where they kiss judas looks so guilty and defeated and the kiss is so real. Whereas in the 1976 version the kiss is on the cheek and Jesus's reaction is really strange and doesnt seem to fit..

Wait I’m confused a bit why are they offering money when it sounds like Judas is basically like “ no really I’ll do it you don’t need to pay me”

Anyone who thinks this version is better than the original is out of their mind.

Murray Head still got this best. Carl Anderson was a better singer, but couldn't get the anguish in his delivery.

Aw man. This is the guy playing this version’s Judas? I Mean he’s not horrible, it’s just not even close to how amazing the 1973 singer was
