I think they cut Then We Are Decided because of what OP said, that Caiaphas in this version seems like he is the one who needs convincing to have Jesus executed and the song is all about how he needs to convince the Pharisees to have him executed
@johnblankenhorn97303 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me like he needs convincing until the line (and his far-off stare during) "I see bad things arising." It feels like that's the moment where it suddenly clicks for Caiaphas as to what could happen if they don't remove Jesus. After that the roles reverse, Caiaphas now strong-arms them into supporting killing Jesus. He manhandles them during "fools you have no perception", and "we must crush him completed," while the others give each other a look before singing "must die must die this Jesus must die". At the beginning of the song the others may have simply wanted Jesus arrested or forced underground ("go call the Roman guard"). I think this song has a very different feel thanks to the lack of "Then We Are Decided" as others have said.

The thing this version did INFINITELY better than the original was not show the crowd during this scene. The ‘73 version showed the “whole town on its feet” and had about 15 guys standing on the ground. Literally there were about as many people celebrating jesus as there were people on the scaffolding singing about how there “a huge massive crowd”. This version however didn’t show the crowd, just using vocals and props and allowing your imagination to do the rest.

But then do you realise that the 1973 film was actually about a small acting troup performing the musical in the desert. Let my son listen to this when he was young, as I did when I was young. The teachers were not impressed when he was wandering about school singing "this jesus must die"

I love the setting here. It fits really well with these characters. Needless to say, this version of Caiaphas is magnificent. I could see Patrick Page in the role.

@@TovKafur The main problem was that Jerome Pradon is (or at least was at the time this was done; his range may have shifted a bit over the years) technically a fairly classic baritenor and both Judas and Jesus are written for firm rock tenor voices. I think I even remember coming across an interview where he said there was no way he'd be able to play Judas in a full 8-show-a-week run because of the strain on his voice. That said, I agree with you on the acting front; his reactions and whatever he's doing, even if it's just in the background, is often better and more interesting to watch than anything else going on in the scene. Personally, I can forgive the pitchy and rough vocals for his acting.

So I was listening to the JCSS track at work one day on my earbuds and singing along. I didn't know someone came into the room, or how long they'd been there but I was at the part that says, "must die, must die this Jesus must die," and they looked absolutely horrified.

While the 70s original is still my favorite, I gotta say that I think this one did a better job at incorporating the modern elements into its world, and I'm especially in love with how the place looks like an urban dystopia. Though I still would love to see more natural environments like in the original, as that setting helped the characters and universe feel bigger than just one city

Michael Shaeffer as Annas was the perfect counterpoint to the magnificent Frederick B Owens as Caiaphas. Others have played these parts but these two own the genre. Annas' high pitched weaselling entwining that awful deep power of deadly Caiaphas. Did Loyd Webber realise what he was creating when he first thought to put this work down?

Good Caiaphas, the council waits for you. The Pharisees and priests are here for you. CAIAPHAS Ah gentlemen, you know why we are here. We've not much time, and quite a problem here MOB (outside) Hosanna! Superstar! Hosanna! Superstar! Hosanna! Superstar! Hosanna! Superstar! ANNAS Listen to that howling mob of blockheads in the street! A trick or two with lepers, and the whole town's on its feet. ALL (inside) He is dangerous! MOB (outside) Jesus Christ Superstar! ALL (inside) He is dangerous! MOB (outside) Tell us that you're who they say you are. PRIEST TWO The man is in town right now to whip up some support. PRIEST THREE A rabble rousing mission that I think we must abort. ALL (inside) He is dangerous! MOB (outside) Jesus Christ Superstar! ALL (inside) He is dangerous! PRIEST TWO Look Caiaphas, they're right outside our yard. PRIEST THREE Quick Caiaphas, go call the Roman guard. CAIAPHAS No, wait! We need a more permanent solution to our problem. ANNAS What then to do about Jesus of Nazareth? Miracle wonderman, hero of fools. PRIEST THREE No riots, no army, no fighting, no slogans. CAIAPHAS One thing I'll say for him -- Jesus is cool. ANNAS We dare not leave him to his own devices. His half-witted fans will get out of control. PRIESTS But how can we stop him? His glamour increases By leaps every moment; he's top of the poll. CAIAPHAS I see bad things arising. The crowd crown him king; which the Romans would ban. I see blood and destruction, Our elimination because of one man. Blood and destruction because of one man. ALL (inside) Because, because, because of one man. CAIAPHAS Our elimination because of one man. ALL (inside) Because, because, because of one, 'cause of one, 'cause of one man. PRIEST THREE What then to do about this Jesus-mania? ANNAS How do we deal with a carpenter king? PRIESTS Where do we start with a man who is bigger Than John was when John did his baptism thing? CAIAPHAS Fools, you have no perception! The stakes we are gambling are frighteningly high! We must crush him completely, So like John before him, this Jesus must die. For the sake of the nation, this Jesus must die. ALL (inside) Must die, must die, this Jesus must die. CAIAPHAS So like John before him, this Jesus must die. ALL (inside) Must die, must die, this Jesus must, Jesus must, Jesus must die!

I think the older version has definitely some more comedy feels but this is so much better on a musical level. It really sounds like music, the old version just sounds like someone talking while music is in the background. And it's a bit more scary so that's cool. It really feels like a council where they debate instead of just walking shirtless on a construction. The acting is better in my opinion aswell. And their voices perfectly match
