I think Damon didn't realized it at the time , his feelings had already started to shift. Bonnie made his heart beat a little faster, him smiling more and him wanting to protect her. She became his equal, the one who accepted him for who he was.

No she thought he wanted to get Bonnie back so that Bonnie can vouch how he’s changed and good he is to Elena . Because she has no memories of loving him .. so she thought it was for that but later on .. he tells Elena that’s he’s trying to get bonnie back because she sacrificed herself for him and nothing to do with her vouching for him to Elena .
