I have a lot of respect for Lindelof after watching The Leftovers, because it shows his growth as a writer. Rather than surrendering his love for ambiguity, he bakes it directly into the narrative. Ambiguity no longer becomes a convenient crutch, but the central theme of the show. I think it's much easier to accept ambiguity when the story wears it on its sleeve from the get-go. Instead of focusing on the tiny details of the plot and getting logical explanations for everything, you can accept the show for what it is and pay closer attention to the themes, characters, emotional arcs, etc.

Nevertheless, of what other people think, I found this series to be equivalent to seeing an artist paint a masterpiece. This series gripped me on all levels. Never have any story on cinema or television have ever touched me on an emotional level that this show has done. Bravo to all involved, the writers, the performers, HBO for putting it on, all the way to the set designers and all union workers who put that show together. Bravo! Now the bar has been set so high. I hope that when award season comes, The Leftovers will get their due in a big way.

Same here. I was preparing myself emotionally for the third season for months, and yesterday I finally allowed myself to go there. I compared season 2 to 10 years of therapy and season 3 didn't disappoint me. One of the greatest things I've ever seen. Great way of starting my year.

I loved how open ended the show was after the finale. Just like in real life, nobody knows what is true or real. It was never shown that Nora really went where he said she went or why Kevin can't seem to die. The show was always about people trying to explain the unexplainable and in the end nobody really figured anything out, but they still kept on going. It was the perfect ending to the story for me.

@@jjayguy23He helped me for two minutes. Then he told me that no one really believes 100 percent in Christian scripture, and the same goes for every religion. He did understand that many people have to be a part of some things along with other people. He didn't understand why people would lie and deny their true beliefs because it wasn't a true Christian or other Monotheistic religions. People believe in God, but not the same one, though they keep claiming it. They believe in their own version of God, and it doesn't matter because it's about being a good person for others, the planet and our future. The unrepairable damage men have caused, by forcing different made-up Gods and rules upon us, have held our ugly human behaviour in stagnation, instead of being open, looking inwards and work together for a god future for all men. Then we cried for the narcissistic, self-preserving and prideful ways of the homo sapien species. A species who actually could prevail, if we just had the strength to change our behavior through reality and facts, instead of doing the same things over and over again ( the same ideologies, religions, politics, ) and then expect different results. It was a day of great shame for me, and the shame just keeps on getting worse every day, looking at a world in 🙈 🙉 🙊

DuuuuuuDe!! I know this comment is a year old but I wanted to tell you how big of a fan I am of your channel. And I Love that you appreciate The Leftovers as much as I do. It deserves far more credit. Acting/writing/direction/music, all top teir. Season 2 particularly is some of the best storytellying I've ever seen. Be it movie, tv, book, not much else compares. Damon Lindelof is easily my favourite writer working today. He deserves more credit as well. But I digress...next to NewRockstars you have the Best channel for Game of Thrones dissection/theory videos. Your most recent videos on GoT, from the past couple months, were particularly well done (on the Azor Ahi prophecy?) Did you do a couple for The Leftovers as well...right? Either way, somebody Needs to do an episode×episode breakdown of the series. Similar to how NewRockstars do their GoT breakdowns. Which are so incredibly detailed and well written. And you're right there next to them in my mind. Your breakdown of story points and interpretations there of are Great. As an amateur filmmaker trying to make a career of it, I admire the work you do very much.

If I could ask Damon a reasonable question of the writers intent behind the show, it would be "did Jill's phone call to Laurie at the end of "Certified" save Laurie's life?" I thought she committed suicide after watching that brilliant episode 4 times, but then she's alive in the finale. In retrospect, I perceive Laurie's reflective moments before she goes in the water as a change of heart and a change of mind, after the phone call.
@soccerguy325

Lindelof said in an interview that when the scene was written, and even right before the scene was shot, they were almost totally convinced that she had killed herself. I think that was the intent. But it just didn't "feel" right to them, and that in retrospect it just wouldn't make much sense. So they made it clear in the finale that she hadn't done it. Here's the interview if you want to read it (very enlightening): www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/leftovers-series-finale-explained-1010052

Damon is so right that those shows are never judged by their finales, and LOST's reputation is unbelievably unfair. I don't think there's a writer that gets a worse rep than Lindelof, and I don't think there's one that deserves praises any more than him either. As someone who adored the LOST finale, I think he nailed it again. It was all it needed to be, simple yet effective. Episode 7 was fucking fantastic at tying up the stories of Michael, John, Kevin Sr, and Grace,as well as honouring past characters like Patti and Meg. But episode 8 was an amazing resolution of Nora and Kevin's life and romance, as well as having a beautiful final scene with Matt at the beginning. Its so hard to describe to people why I love LOST and The Leftovers other than just saying they make me *feel* like no other show is able to. I love Lindelof's writing. There's something about it that just agrees with my brain. I don't know what it is but I'm always on the same page with any of his ideas. I was hooked from the first episode of The Leftovers, and Lindelof has a brilliant way of just continuing to do shit on TV that I love to see. Like everything with the hotel just made sense to me, from a creative angle. Thank you HBO for allowing this show to happen, thank you Tom Perrotta for writing an amazing book and co-writing the show, thank you to Mimi Leder and all the other fabulous directors of this series for creating such a memorable and visually striking series, and thank you to Max Richter for giving this show an absolutely emotional and powerful soundtrack that just makes me emotional every time. And Bravo, Damon, for all of your work. And I will continue to support all your future projects.

That conversation at the end was everything it needed to be. I love how Lindelof can carry mystery and new ideas in his shows even to the final episode. Like with LOST, everything with the core of the Island was still kept secret until the very end, and that's a fairly important piece of lore to introduce at the last second. And that's a gamble, but it pays off. Same here with Nora's conversation, which was just mind boggling in suggesting/introducing this whole concept of the 'departed' having gone through their own departure, with 98% of the world disappearing instead. It pays off amazingly. Though what I thought was truly beautiful was how it wasn't even shown to us visually, just told. We're living through most of the episode confused as to what happened to Nora on that day, and if she went through, and if what we're watching is real. Since Kevin's final monologue and we're caught up on his side and realise it's all real, it's like we're also having that cup of tea listening to Nora explain what happened. Cause we are just as clueless as Kevin there. Now, Kevin believes her, and so do I, but the fact that people can leave it be open ended is perfect, and I think it's a great summarization/explanation of what happened on the departure day. I think ambiguity is Lindelof's superpower. And the depth to his shows and the way we can all analyse them like this is wonderful.

I think he's a good writer, but he doesn't know how to finish shit. It's kind of annoying. He gave us 2 really large questions that needed answering by the series finale. 1. why is Kevin so got damn special and 2. why did those specific individuals get transported to the other universe or earth or whatever the fuck? that's it! just answer those 2 fucking questions! Instead he copped out and did the same bullshit every other writer does when they can't figure out a decent end. Leave it open ended, and i would have been all for that if he just answered those 2 questions, then leave it as open ended as you want, because then the audience would be able to come up with their own theories, and although we can still do that, it isn't the same, nothing feels right because nothing has really been answered. Oh hey this crazy bullshit happened, look at this guy he's kind of important let's follow him, around for awhile then flip way into the future where we will give you another mystery. everyone that departed isn't in heaven, they just went to another universe. Why you ask? because fuck you that's why! Don't get me wrong i absolutely adore this ans writing, he keeps me on the edge of my seat, he's talented at getting me to care about every character on screen and he brings suspense to simple conversation during the story, and is excellent at providing exposition without giving away anything. he makes me think for it., and this has provided me with the passion to rant like this, i hope he makes more. But learns to finish what he started got Damn it!

Shitty thing to say about someone. And then you thank the guy who made the show for "enriching our lives" - who is "our", since you said your wife was never able to watch an episode? the point of the show is entirely in what Lindelof said: "what do we do now?" The entire show is all about people interpreting the sudden departure, falsely, truly, to cope, to create meaning where there is none, or where there is. One example of this is with the stolen plastic baby jesus in the beginning of BJ and the AC in season 1. We start with a montage of a carefully hand crafted Baby Jesus. So much is poured into it, but then it's stolen. Then it shows up later at Kevin Garvey's doorstep. It foreshadows later when Holy Wayne's baby, considered by some to be the next messiah, shows up on his doorstep. Kevin and Nora see this as some sort of miracle. But at the end of the day the plastic baby jesus is just a store-brought proxy and not the real Jesus, and Holy Wayne was just a cult-leader con man and his child is not meant to elicit any upcoming salvation. Later in season 2 the baby is stolen from Nora, and it elicits a panic. Sometimes, we just create our own meaning and, sometimes, we just get carried away in our own self-righteousness, often at the expense of ourselves and others...

Loved the Lost finale, Loved The Leftovers finale. I'm one that those judge a show by its finale and it soes play a role in my pantheon of shows. My top shows all had great finales in my eyes. Which is why both Lost and Leftovers are in my top5 All-Time Greatest shows I've watches. Game of thrones sits wayyy in number 10 soon to be out of my top10 just purely because of the finale and how they decides to end it. Endings on shows are so important to me personally, and also for many others as well, but to me its all about how the journey ends. If its not satisfying and more importantly right to the story. For example Supernatural is about to end, they are on their final season and I'm very hesitant how the hell they are going to end the show. So far I find the story sort of forced, and I just hope it makes sense at the end and we get a nice send off to our characters.

I want to know why kevin could survive death and here voices. I think the reason we never get an explanation is because kevin defeated patty in the well. Clearly the higher forces wanted those two as a team for something, hence why kevin was saved when he tried to drown himself but then that earth quake happened; plus when he finally does kick the bucket, patty screams "No". And later on Kevin sings that song, i just want to go home so there's that too. But i just want to know, what was his purpose in that grand plan? To lead another departure? Or, to rule the world, and lunch nukes at everyone?

I don't care if I'm labelled "simple-minded", but this finale was the most unsatisfying shit ever. I wasted my time watching this show just to be left with way too many unanswered questions. I appreciate artistry and deviating from the norm so that we don't always learn to expect what'll happen in movies/shows. But this level of ambiguity was just straight up fucking frustrating, right to the very end of this show.

As many series give us episodes after episodes and stories aka ideas that went wrong and left behide leaving plot holes. My problem is not why the departure happen... it happens because it happens... but we never learned why Christine's child (and the rest of Wayne children) was important... we never learned why Kevin was important we never learned about National Geographic magazine the afterlife world... was what? episodes to fill the seasons? Form the finale I liked only the last 20 minutes...

@Ar Ar I'd say you're right for the most part though I think you're being a wee bit harsh. We don't know things like whether it was meant to be Kevin's subconscious (the side I'd err on tbh) or the actual afterlife for example, I think that's probably that's the point (you said something similar too). There's no explanation for anything and no proof to speak of. It can be as meaningful or meaningless as you imagine but you'll never truly know the answers.

the hate over the Lost ending, like the ending of BSG, was frankly ridiculous. Its like people had already decided their ending and refuse to allow themselves to experience the real ending. I know with Leftovers I really tried to stop that feeling, because I know what I wanted to happen, however through out the last three years the show didnt give a hoot what anyone thought. it told the tale it wanted, it was my choice whether I liked it or not. The same with Lost people wanted some sort of answers for something that wasnt interested in answers, It was NEVER interesting in giving answers. why would you expect them in the last episode.

The fact of the matter, just like Lost, it started with an interesting idea and not much more than that. There are so many strands left unresolved it's almost as if the storyline was forgotten. It's a Lindelof trademark, big set up and no payoff.

Personally, I would disagree entirely. It's fine if you don't think the resolution was good or satisfying, but there WAS a resolution and answers. To say that there was no payoff is ludicrous and delusional. The Leftovers and Lost had very satisfying payoffs, in my opinion.

All the viewers trying to understand the departure. That is the exaxt point of the show. We see all kinds of people in the show trying to make sense of things that they don't understand, just like in you do in your comments. The point of the show is "things just happen. and people are always trying to make an explanation of that thing, no matter how ridicilous that explanation is.". What I understand is, none of the explanations at the show was real. Not miracles, not Messiahs, not parallel universes, not holy magazines none of them. Only real thing was the departure. The series wasn't trying to tell why the departure happened. It was telling how people can come up with crazy explanations and how people can get desperate when they try to make sense of things.

@brentblayoneblayone3948

^WTF are you talking about? The entire 5th Season was the monumental climax of the shows growing themes and character arcs and leads to inarguably the 2 best episodes in the entire show ("To'hajiilee" and "Ozymandias") followed by two smart, and satisfying epilogue episodes that wrapped up the remaining threads. The show is clearly meant to be watched in long stretches and really developed the majority of it's current fan base after it finished airing and was released on streaming platforms, rendering the "cliffhanger" argument pointless. I'm also curious to hear why you felt it had "one of the worst finales of any major show". I found the Breaking Bad finale to be totally appropriate. Walter White is dead in Ozymandias and has already lost his family, his money and everything he did this for in the first place, already lost everything, yet Heisenberg creates one final scheme to achieve some sort of redemption in his own mind. It fits the character and it fits the story, giving us the anti-hero revenge climax we're craving while also critiquing us for wanting it, and clearly implying that Walt is beyond true redemption, finding peace in the cold, calculated steel of meth lab equipment as he lays down and dies. I also liked the BB finale's return to the dark humour that was very present throughout the first couple seasons.

For me concept 2 ℅ vanishing was always contradictory and i never even accepted that we will get logical answers. However , story unfold it becomes discern that they are trying to lead the story toward a conclusion where why? & how? Is not important because it have tendency to create perpetual purgatory. So, if we can't get reasonable answer then why not accept the possibility which nora said she understand in the final scene. Thus, through the story of these character, especially Kevin and nora, show try convey its conclusion or massage .And by the ambiguity of their faces in that final scene and their well known their past chemistry we understand that , the killing of their inner contradiction is much more important for them then finding what is real in this uncertain world. Eventually they accept themselves and believe in each other, that is utterly satisfying according to overall theme of the show.

This is where the whole story makes sense he never claimed that he is Jesus, it is the people around him who believed that he was Jesus because they could not explain events that they perceive as paranormal of which Kevin is a part. but in fact it is the disappearance of the 2% that created this distorted reality in the way they analyze and see things and thus designated Kevin as Jesus to make sense of their questions without answers

Well, Prometheus for me was a disaster. Everyone complained about Lost not having closure. However, I wasn't expecting The Leftovers to answer any profound questions. I was quite surprised on how much was revealed and answered. What really blow me away is that you found out what happened to the departed. Of course, not all the questions were answered. So much was ambiguous and I can understand that's inherent with his style of story telling. So overall, I was expecting... no, I knew... only minuscule tidbits of the story to be answered and not any of the major plot points to be answered. What I got was the opposite. Where the departed went... well, that was really ingenious... kind of aligns with quantum field theory sums over history approach to reality. Glad to say I'm Damon Lindelof fan now.

Because so much of Lost and The Leftovers is constantly raising questions, there’s nothing artistic about leaving 95% of them unanswered - that is lazy and bad writing.
