So I recently learned that one of the big reasons there's so much scaffolding in NYC is because a college student was hit with debris that fell off the side of a building in the '70s and she died. So the city made a law that any building (I think over 5 stories) has to be inspected every 5 years. There's an episode of How To with John Wilson that covers it that's really good!

I read that streets in Europe such as Paris and Venice are great for pedestrians because you are constantly revealing new sceneries as you walk, whereas most of North American cities were built for cars so you can already see what’s on the end of a straight street and that makes it much less fun to walk. Plus buildings and signs are built in the car scale, meaning you have to walk for extra time to get to another store or neighborhood

Maybe I am the only one, but after living in a big city for 2 years, I got very sick of it. It is cool when you have your friend group, a big network, see and meet different people and their apartment. That network is really the only way to fully experience a city. If you dont have it, you will never feel more isolated, at least thats how I feel. Everything is so loud, overwhelming. When I see so many people at one place, my brain kinda devalues them as individuals. All I see is a sea of genes, if that makes sense. People treat each other interchangeably, you are just one of thousands, they wont remember your conversation or your face. It is kinda sad, because I feel like its hard to get to know people. On the other hand anonymity can also be great, sry for bringing the vibe down, maybe its just the pandemic for me lol.
