SF and Oakland aren’t too bad tbh. They’re probably the best recreations of the west coast version of NYC, just with less fun food. It use to be more radical and weird (in a good way) in SF/Oakland however the gentrification really has done a number on the life there. Even though I just walked through it with them for a whole hour. It was neat seeing the elderly playing board games in the main gathering area seen @ 2:47 in the video. I think what's missing in a lot of places is community and NYC seems to have it in spades. I haven't been to NYC but it sounds like there's a sense of community, even has people mind their own individualities.
@matcha_
@matcha_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah I can confirm that it's the community. We're slowly losing that sense of community though b/c of rapid gentrification. I work in Brooklyn but am from Queens. Brooklyn, especially certain neighborhoods, you don't feel as much community or collectiveness as you used to. It's very much still present in Queens b/c it's not as gentrified yet. There's a very visible divide which especially came through during Covid. Parts of Brooklyn straight up became ghost towns b/c transplants couldn't deal with lockdowns in the city and went home. Queens was fine for the most part b/c it's mostly working people, families, people who call this their home and locals who have been here for years and years who don't get up and leave when the going gets rough. We were all helping each other out. Then just as the city started to be brought back from the dead (by the people who stayed) housing prices started to drop and locals finally started being able to afford apartments. Then lockdowns began to lift and the transplants came back to party it up while ignoring Covid and prices for everything shot back up. It was very obvious from how people behaved towards the pandemic who was a member of the community and who wasn't. A community can only exist when the people actively take part in the community. Too many transplants aren't made for NY and are here for the glitz and glamor only. They'll leave when the fun is up and the rest of us will clean up after them as we always do and keep NY as it is. We're a city made up of different communities that come together as New Yorkers when needed. I won't tolerate you looking my way today but if the sky falls tomorrow, I'll hold it up with you.
@sillyrosster

@@matcha_ do you think there's any way to slow down the gentrification?
@introvertedmadness
@introvertedmadness Жыл бұрын
yeah it's weird cuz people don't really talk to each other a lot so if you're from somewhere else you might be think: why are all these unfriendly people in my neighborhood just staring at me lol. but i do think the sense of community comes from a shared sense that we are all dealing with the same bs of everyday life and trying to make it the best we can lol. and especially when some bad shit is going on in the city, people will mobilize QUICK cuz we're all just trying to live our lives and get from point A to point B without too much trouble gentrification is mad tough like matcha mentioned. i think there's a big supply and demand crunch coming soon cuz there simply doesn't seem to be enough housing for everyone who wants to be here. the cheapest house anywhere in nyc seems to be going for close to a million dollars. hopefully the people in charge figure it out!!! nyc ain't shit without the locals
@amg9163
@amg9163 Жыл бұрын
To slow down gentrification, renter's need to band together and stay put when their landlord attempts to throw them out. They need to get over to the NYC court (they have free services, hours can be found online)... And the residents need to *not be pressured to move out* before obtaining a *very generous "buy out" amount* from their landlord. The landlord stands to gain a ton of $$$ by kicking out renter's who do not stand up for themselves, and who are ultimately left *poorer* as a result. Anecdotal point here, in the mid 2000's, I negotiated an $85k buy out from my landlord, who renovated my apartment after I moved and sold it for $650k. If more residents stood up and demanded (or asked nicely, or negotiated fairly) a buy out, it would not be a huge *gain* for landlords to throw tenants out. Hope you or someone finds this helpful. Good luck!!

There was a comedian I saw one time (who's name I sadly forget, I'll edit if I remember) but he had a bit about how bizarre New York can often be. In it he explains how he went to Portland, and all the people were always talking about "keep Portland weird," but his experience there was just a bunch of normal people going to work. And when he would ask, 'where's the weird?' The response was always just 'oh its around,' but it wasn't around. There was zero weird. Then he comes to New York to do a show and on his first night, while he's riding the subway to his hotel, he sees a guy with the top half of a SpongeBob costume but no pants beating up another guy, while the guy getting beat up continually exclaims 'no spongebill no!' That's the real life weird we all are looking for.

When NYC goes thru some shit, we go thru it TOGETHER.... its a time to be alive and i am so here for it. Several times i saw shots from near my house and I felt so seen

I am splitting my sides watching this video, and yes, I attended NYU for grad school. Thank you so much for this realistic, yet good natured review. I lived in NYC for 29 years and am now back in Texas, in America’s 4th most populous city. It’s like living in Costco. Again, thanks for the laughs.

ohhh are you possibly referring to dallas? Cause I have lived here all my 20 years, and I am constantly thinking about where to go after. I think it's only natural I want to see the world outside of my home state; I have pretty much only spent time in Florida, Oklahoma, Mississippi, and Massachusetts. I went on a school trip to Quebec, Canada in high school, but other than that, I haven't seen much of the world. The DFW area is gigantic, but it takes so damn long to get anywhere that is anywhere, unless of course you live smack-dab in the middle of the city. I don't get out too often other than for work and school, so I haven't had much of a chance to enjoy DFW to its fullest extent, even though I have lived here my whole life. Maybe one day...

NYC story time: my family and I went to visit NYC to see School of Rock on Broadway years ago. I always hated NYC…just because I never had a good time there. I had been eating poorly for about 3 days beforehand dealing with a breakup and was very…VERY constipated. Enough where I was in pretty serious discomfort anytime I was sitting. After a Bieber Bus ride to NYC, walking around all day and night, sitting through the musical, and drinking tons of coffee….things were in motion. It was around this time that I realized…oh GOD there are no public restrooms. I ended up moving at a rapid shuffle/power walk 6 blocks to find a McDonald’s where the bathroom was downstairs of the eating area….shoulder checked a kid out of the way for the stall, and proceeded to expel demons from me while listening to people upstairs getting into a fist fight about some miscommunication over their food order. 10/10 I go back every year with friends.

I lived Harlem for almost a year, Bay Ridge for two years and Ditmas Park for two years. I sublet in Red Hook for my first few months while looking for a more permanent living situation. And finally I also spent a few weeks in Crown Heights (near the Chabad HQ) while moving from Bay Ridge to Ditmas Park. I loved how all of these neighborhoods had completely different vibes. Although I worked a pretty low paid customer service job in Midtown, I had such an adventurous time living and exploring different parts of NYC. And you're right that there's basically something to do for anyone. (You're also right about the state of the trains. The R train might be the worst train in the whole MTA system. So much so that it was the last train line they repaired after Hurricane Sandy.)

Gosh, new york either makes you hate it one day and love it the next. I was born in the Bronx and moved away but I always find my way back and then right back out lol. Recently went to visit and it was definitely different in a lot of areas. Funny enough china town was definitely on my list to visit. Also, there is literally always something happening every day in new york randomly. One place I always avoid is time square. I wish people would venture out more there are just so many cute little stores and places to eat and you really get a feel for new york.

I grew up in Mountain View and moved to the SF as soon as I could. Watching your Surviving the Bay Area video was so relatable because it was all the reasons I wanted to gtfo the Peninsula & South Bay (though your video didn't quite apply to North or East Bay, but happy you didn't drag SF into it :)). I'm now an NYU graduate student and am seeing how accurate this one is too! Keep up the good work! Loving all the vids
