In this episode, we have an interview you might have heard before but probably not. In the crate of Marc's tapes are some unmarked interviews that Marc did not do. One of those tapes has an interview with Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi from 1978. I couldn't find the interview anywhere online, so I thought "this is too good not to be heard" and decided to make it public.
At the time of this interview, Aykroyd was 26 years old, and Belushi was 29. In the interview, they talk in-depth about their two upcoming films, “The Blues Brothers” and Stephen Spielberg’s “1941.” Also in the interview, Belushi reveals how he came up with the Samurai character he played on Saturday Night Live, and Aykroyd tells where he found the inspiration for the SNL skit the Coneheads.
In the interview Aykroyd and Belushi talk about:
- They talk in-depth about their yet to be made film The Blues Brothers.
- How democratic Saturday Night Live is.
- The greatness of performing on live tv.
- How they met and Second City days.
- How the Blues Brother’s look came to be.
- Aykroyd reveals how he came up with the SNL skit the Coneheads.
- The inspiration for Belushi’s Samurai character.
- Auditioning for SNL
- Thoughts on one of their next films, 1941.
This episode is brought to you by the award-winning true-crime documentary Dead Man's Line.

To me it sounds like John and Dan share the same brain. You can hear their amazing chemistry just by listening to them talk together. Its undeniable.

I enjoyed this Immeasurably. I’ve been passionate Aykroyd and Belushi since early childhood. I recognize bits of this but I don’t remember hearing it before. This is a treasure that has massively improved my mood today.

I was stationed in Connecticut when John died. Right after they buried him on Martha's Vineyard someone left a sign on his grave that said: "He could have given us years of entertainment but Noooooooo" Aykroyd & Belushi were great together.

Very interesting to hear about the origin of the Coneheads and the Samurai. Also to hear that some of Dan's earliest ideas for Blues Brothers made it into the final film.

This is great! I miss Belushi. I miss the original Saturday Night Live, before it became....SNL, whatever that is. Lucky to be there at (almost) the beginning.

Good stuff. Have seen/heard a few interviews with both together and always the same. DA constantly interrupts JB or answers questions that were directed towards JB. Strange. Would have like to hear more from JB, a grown man who can answer for himself.

Definitely. They may not be snorting right then and there but they are definitely sucking back the drains from the mound they snorted right before the Interview.

You can tell Belushi was coked up in this interview. You can hear how his nose is clogged in his voice. 7:20 you can hear Belushi snorting and all plugged up. Not snorting coke, but his nose is definitely clogged up like he has a cold.

@@allsystemsgo8678 I was at the shooting in Wauconda Illinois in 1978 where they drove on Phil's Beach in Wauconda. Belushi did not hide the fact he was snorting coke. He was bringing female lifeguards into his RV and offering them coke. Whenever he left his RV people would sing, "It's raining it's snowing is a hurricane a blowing ..." Crazy times.

John sounds very enthusiastic here, probably the routine of SNL was better for him than the ups and downs of movies and all the decisions he had to make without that inbuilt structure
