Hoss was my favorite character from Bonanza, great actor. This was prophetic. HIs last episode was Season 13 Episode 26, aired April 2 1972, He passed away in May 13, 1972, the show ended after the following 14th year. He really was the heart and soul of that show. HIs intelligence was often hidden underneath the loveable Hoss's surface, but it always came out in these interviews. He was a decorated combat veteran of the Korean war, serving as an infantry sergeant, Most people think or assume he died of a heart attack. He had gallbladder surgery, which I believe was deemed successful, went home but developed a blood clot in his lung, which caused his death. Very sad end to a wonderful life.

@@rayjr62 Fascinating - Thank you for this information! I am awed by how many actors in decades past had another career, possibility that showed strength of character, intelligence, patriotism, and more. Many of today's actors - Legends in their own minds - are one-trick ponies who barely have high school educations, and liberal-to-socialists views. No doubt a HUGE factor that I watch considerably more movies and TV series from years past over the PC garbage of today! :-)

It is very hard for me to see this big huge loveable intelligent man sit here before my eyes and talk about China as if they are our best friends. Dan smoked. He was a staunch Democrat from the old school. He served his country in Korea. He was a highly educated man. His opinions are of the times. I have to believe today, if he were alive and in his prime, his views on China would be vastly different. He fought the Communist in Korea mind you, but he was a fair minded man with pretty strong convictions. Bonanza, in my opinion, was, is and shall always be, the quintessential western TV show. Every time I see the opening sequence with Hoss, Adam, Little Joe and Ben, I cry because these men represented an amazing time in our countries history. Each is gone now and I pray they keep riding into that sunset in God's piece of the sky called "*THE PONDEROSA*"🐎🐎🐎🐎🙏

No, he was right. We couldn’t ignore such a large population. The U.S. just made some bad deals along the way. If we had ignored them China would have made deals with the rest of the world and who knows what would have happened politically. It would most likely be a more aggressive China due to wanting more.

He just could not keep a healthy weight. His doctors had to have him lose weight before doing a simple gallbladder surgery because he was well over 300 lbs and at risk with his heart, blood pressure with surgery. He dropped some weight but not enough. As smart as he was one would think he would have loved his family enough to figure out how to eat properly to stay around longer.

Dan was a good ole boy from Texas with a couple college degrees, a football player, an intellect, active politically, a teacher who wanted his children educated in Switzerland. He was more than just Hoss. A good man. That's a shame he died so young after surgery. He might have made a mark on society.

His intelligence and intellect was impressive. I, and probably many others , never saw that side of him. He was a great individual, both as an actor and as an intellectual .

Hoss was such a kind, gentle soul with empathy for others. Dan Blocker was a wonderful actor, who died much too soon. RIP

Have you seen the comment above BY LYNN WOOD ? Like to see a BOOK about this man from some who personally knew him; or at least a well-assembled video ....A VIDEO of some public domain footage connected with DAN BLOCKER'S MILITARY EXPERIENCE ? GREAT INTERVIEW; Seems to me it's the ARROGANT HOSTS that elicit the inarticulate appropriateness of "today's" interview shows. They're moreover about the hosts needing a screen test sample to show , than the actors they're interviewing ? I think he had "allot more under his belt" w/ more cleverness "up his sleeve" than he had time to express ? such as Michael Landon "was" or "became" the Little House on the Prarie?" DAN WAS the "gentle heart character " that WAS " Bonanza." I used to love to make up titles back then (and still , ha) and thought a whole show should have been devoted TO Dan Blocker, and title it " Gentle Heart?" Gee , maybe I'll copyright that tonight.(.Sounds like 'a song comin' ON" HERE yes ?) Well, said, and this in regard to an actor whose private life wasn't displayed as so many video-makers do today to their actors. (Think I have a list of those inaccuracies somewhere by now!). TEXAN, huh? Bet he'd have allot to say TODAY about China, Afghanistan, the Ukraine, Putin and the Fake Administration of Gangsters flopping around pretending they know anything about helping THEIR OWN PEOPLE ? What a great "character' he was-So now we see he was " Two Great Characters! " working full time to support a family AND working on a degree at UCLA , .....WHILE trying to enter the acting field, is allot of stress on allot of aspiring actors too; RIP Dan ! I was sort of hoping that a commenter who knew Mr. Blocker personally, would come here, and I could ask if they KNEW, if the music agent " Don" Blocker -was related to Dan? His office was two doors down from "Hank" Mancini's" and he represented Dolly back when songwriters had to play their songs live for agents. (Long story short --ANYONE ?) Thanks, " Beauty is as Beauty Does" the song I sang live for DON Blocker the day I accidentally walked into Hank's office by mistake! Praying for Afghanistan and the Ukraine" "God Gave Them One More Day" I Ain't no Middleman" FredGold& LyndaFaye "LyndaFayeSmusic@gmail.com) and at Yahoo, if I get censored for using the word God too often?

Was an interesting interview. He demonstrated that he was a highly educated person. He had his M.A. degree & dropped out of the Ph.D program to pursue acting. It would be interesting to speculate where he would have ended up if he had lived. He had been a teacher, was interested in politics, & was a good actor. Would he have gone back to teaching? Would he have entered politics like Ronald Reagan or Sonny Bono? Would he have continued acting? One can only wonder.

Back in 1972, I was not a great fan of bonanza, but still liked him as hoss. It was a sad thing to hear of his passing back then.

Gosh this is the only interview I have seen of Mr Blocker he was such an incredible actor. I know he appeared on talk shows but there are none on You Tube. I grew up in the UK with Bonanza but only up to 1970 as I then left home to do my registered nurse training so did not see the last few seasons. Since we have been in total lockdown I have been catching up rewatching all the episodes again and it reminded me of very happy days of my youth. So whoever posted this thank you.

My whole family would sit around the one TV set in our home (remember those days!) to watch Bonanza together (and The Wonderful World of Color....the Disney produced show which was so educational and just beautifully produced!). We really enjoyed Dan Blocker’s character “Hoss” on Bonanza. He was such a good actor....could do both comedy and drama with what seemed like such effortless grace. RIP.

Dan Blocker was one of those rare personalities that you just couldn't help but love. And Hoss Cartwright was my absolute favorite character on Bonanza. If it weren't for Hoss, I probably wouldn't have watched the show for all those seasons.
