Momo's just an accurately written teenager. She's charming and lovable and has a great heart, but is also kind of tactless and insensitive and self-centered. She feels like a real teenager with real teenage flaws, which makes her a very engaging character: you'll come to like her over time, I promise.

She uses a really informal Gyaru way of talking that would be seen as rude/abrasive in Japanese while in English she just be seen as like a 1980’s Valley Girl. I feel like if Momo was a teenage guy instead of a teenage girl a lot of you would not feel so poorly about her tbh… when a girl is standoffish and kind of rude, it’s bad characterization and we hate her. When a guy is standoffish and kind of rude, he’s a mysterious yandere and an instant fan favorite. Even in this show, Okarun is giving it back to her as good as he gets it. They fight with each other, he makes fun of her, too. But no one seems to think he’s mean for it? I jus think it’s important to make sure you’re reasons for disliking Momo are based in actual canon.

Yeah, I noticed she comes across more “mean” in the dub. This happens quite often with dubs actually, where certain characters come off way more unlikable then in the sub due to either the voice acting or terrible translation. That’s why I rarely ever watch in sub. Too many issues with it.

So even if she told him “hey if you see turbo granny you have to outrun her or you’ll get cursed”, it wouldn’t change the outcome. He still would’ve went in there, seen turbo granny, and got cursed. Also he might not have know the aliens exact intentions, but do you really think he didn’t know a single damn thing about the alien she’d encountered. Like I’m sure he could’ve given more information too. I highly doubt he thought the aliens were just going to be all friendly and shit. The were both just dumb kids that made a dare. They both fucked up. It’s not like Momo isn’t trying everything she can to fix the curse either. She feels guilty about getting him cursed just like he felt guilty about getting her in the situation she was in with the aliens. I see no reason to hate her at all.

man... the dub is actually kinda spitting in my cereal when it comes to Momo's characterization. 100% you are fine for thinking she's kind of a jerk here, because in english she's kind of sounding a lot less like a dense yet lovable goofball who doesn't take this stuff as seriously as she should, and a lot more like she's being legitimately flippant about Okarun's feelings because hey, it's not _her_ problem. like, the part where she gives him the nickname "Okarun" is way cuter in japanese, because she sounds like she's legitimately happy that he seems happy to have been given a nickname by his first ever friend. here it just sounds like she's poking fun at him for showing his feelings outwardly. or when she's laughing at his messed up hair, it just sounds harsher here. it triggers more of my "hey, don't make fun of him!" instinctive response, where in the japanese it just seems like Momo just got the giggles at maybe not the best time. and I think if their sweet moments don't hit right, then the times when they bicker hit extra wrong. their bickering is supposed to display that they got comfortable enough to argue with each other super quickly. like, when you can honestly share your opinions with someone, even if you disagree, and the relationship doesn't fall apart because of it, that's actually a great indicator of easy chemistry between people. and even though Okarun is a scrawny nerd, and Momo is a hot popular girl, their awkwardness around each other falls away pretty easily. and!!! that's actually _because_ Momo is kind of a dummy, and easily forgets that there even should be any sort of status barrier between them. Momo is fine getting close to Okarun because he seems interesting, and the fact that she's genuinely personable is why she's a popular girl in the first place. she's a bit of a bull in a china shop when it comes to other people's feelings, but that can be for worse (indelicate and tactless) or for better (honest and straightforward) and even if she screws up a lot, she's really good at sincerely apologizing, and learning from her mistakes. I know this is a super picky opinion... there's probably nothing wrong with the dub actually, but it pains me to see Momo coming off poorly. I genuinely love her character... I hope she redeems her image going forward.

Apparently this was their way of trying to translate her manner of speech from Japanese. She has the dialect stereotypical for more "delinquent" or rough type characters, so they wanted to get that to come across. Personally I think they ended up making the wrong call and instead of just coming off as someone who's unrefined and can be a bit tactless, but ultimately really cares, she comes off as a jerk.

The alien ghost sumo thing is called a “flat woods monster”. Sitings have said that the creature is an alien whilst others claim its a ghost, so dandadan makes it both. Not sure why it’s sumo themed though.

She is difficult to like at first for people, but she grows on you and becomes really favorable, I love her. The manga has a couple of difficult characters to deal with at first but people become fond off later on. (I got a couple, personally.)

She grows on you once you realize that she's actually a good person who just kinda sucks at expressing herself without dragging others down. Which, i mean, she's a teenager?
