During the late nineties, Dan and his wife were spending a lot of time in Maui, Hawaii. My then girlfriend was a huge Fogelberg fan, and she was thrilled when the Fogelberg's became regular customers at the Maui restaurant where she worked. She befriended them, and the four of us went out for dinner and drinks a few times. He was a very laid back, down to earth guy. It's sad that he died way too soon.

He wrote this about his High School Sweet Heart, they went to different colleges and drifted apart, then met at a store one Christmas Eve, hence the name of the song. She was already married, but I think they were really in love before they went their separate ways to college. She divorced her husband after like 5 years. Then one day while driving to work she heard this song, he had waited to release it until she was divorced. And she knew it was about her and Dan. After he passed away kind of early in life (56-57) about 15-20 years ago she told everyone it was about her. She and her current husband would go to his concerts when he came through St. Louis. They were great friends, it was an innocent kiss. COOL STORY.

Her name is Jill (Anderson) Greulich. After Dan passed, she came forward to their hometown newspaper (the Peoria Journal Star) and told the story. It's still online if you search for it. The only thing he changed about the encounter were her husband's job (for privacy) and the color of her eyes (for rhyming purposes.)

I’m thrilled to see that you’ve discovered The Late, Great Dan Fogelberg. You need to react to “Nether Lands”, from the album of the same name. “Nether Lands” was one of Donna Summer’s favorite songs, so you know it must be great. She also covered the song on the Dan Fogelberg Tribute LP. Another must is “Leader Of The Band”. You are so elegant and sincere. Thanks for your reactions!

Such a great story-song, and the definition of bittersweet. Even if it wasn't a true story, it ought to be, which is why I think so many people identify with it. Even if we've never met our old love years later, we've all imagined it, and figured it would go much like this: full of nostalgia and regret. Or maybe we thought that because we heard this song. I'm not sure.

Dan is one of my most loved singer/songwriters! He simply put poetry to the most beautiful and touching music. I’ve been a fan since 1972, when his first album ‘Home Free’ was released at the beginning of my freshman year of high school. I am a native Mississippian, who grew up in the Delta in Greenwood. (Same place that Bobbie Gentry sings about in ‘Ode To Billie Joe 😉.). Dan always credited radio station WZZQ in Jackson for helping launch his career. They were awed by him, as we all were, and shocked that everyone wasn’t promoting this new artist. I was blessed to have seen him in concert more than once, and even after decades, he always took the time to express his deepest thanks to WZZQ and Jackson for helping launch his career. Dan was a true artist of the highest caliber, and still criminally underrated, in my opinion. ❤️

I saw Dan live once in Florida in the late 80s. He was fabulous live. His music is astounding. I think you will love anything of his. RIP Dan. auld lang syne: The point is that the phrase is not recognizable to English speakers because it is not an English phrase. Translated it "old long since," but the is more like "old times" or "the olden days." So it is saying a toast to the old days. The old times.

Auld Lang Syne was written by the famous poet/lyricist Robert Burns (1759-96). Interestingly, his great-great grandson was Robert Hunter (born Robert Burns) who was the lyricist for most of the Grateful Dead’s songs. His partnership with Jerry Garcia led to the band’s tremendous success, as they were the top grossing tour band during their legendary peak years.

Auld Ang Syne is an old, perhaps ancient, Irish or Gallic song and saying that celebrates every end of the old year and beginning of the New Year. The sax player at the end of Dan's song plays the melody without the words: "Let old acquainances be forgot and never brought to mind. We'll drink a cup of kindness dear to Auld Ang Syne"...which roughly means "our old times (together)." Love your reaction to a great song. Bless you, Larry Cox

Old Lang Syne is sung on New Years Eve. Check out some of its lyrics to understand better how it relates to the encounter he sang about in this song. You pronounced his name just right. He writes his own material and it definitely is in the realm of heart felt things as is this live performance. Here's another one of his hits that I never fully understood until I saw this live performance about a year ago. Before the performance he gives the full back story of its meaning to him and the person he wrote it for. The song is Leader Of The Band and this is the link I mentioned. kzbin.info/www/bejne/onWlqqltfdR0r8k I'm pretty sure you will really like his live performance especially after hearing the meaning behind the lyrics. The performance itself is very nice. I'm not asking for a reaction, but I only hope you'll watch it for your own enjoyment. Really...

Auld lang syne. It Was written by Robert burns from Scotland. There is a pub in Edinburgh scotland called the white hart pub. It was established in the 14 or 1500s. It was where Robert Burns would go to to write poetry. I believe he wrote auld lang syne there. The pub holds about 30 people. I went on a golf trip with 3 friends and we stopped in. It was across from our hotel. And we had the best times of our lives. People would just grab a table and it was expected to share it with strangers. We shared ours with an Irish couple and had such a great time. Highly recommend Scotland as a vacation.

This song is about a real life encounter. Fogelberg went out to get some Redi Whip for Irish coffee on Christmas eve and ran into his old high school girlfriend. Fogelberg did admit to some poetic license, as his old flame was actually happily married. After Fogelberg's death, his old girlfriend, Jill Anderson came forward for the first time to relate the story and share her memories of the incident.

This is another of the singing greats. You'll probably like the studio version better. My favorite of his is Heart Hotels.

"Auld Lang Syne" is a traditional song at the ringing in of the New Year. it's author was Scottish, and so the lyrics are Scottish English. Usually the first two stanzas are sung: Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet For days of auld lang syne

It is a real story, but he admitted to taking some liberties with it. Auld Lang Syne is the song that's played on New Year's Eve/Day... "Should old acquaintance be forgot..." The title is old Scottish language and can be translated to "Old time's sake" or "Old time since". The sax solo at the end is a riff on the melody.

Auld Lang Syne means Times Long Past in Scots. It is from a song and poem written by Robert Burns, the greatest poet in Scots and one of the greatest in English too. The original story is two old friends. They played together as children, running through the fields, picking flowers, paddling in the stream. Now as older friends they buy a drink and sit and talk about the old days. They drink from the cup of kindness, the friendship of good friends with history. I know for most of the English speaking world it is a throw away song at New Year but for Scots it has far deeper meaning.

Another great story teller that could bring out the tears that we also lost too early just like Harry Chapin and Jim Croce. The studio recording of this song would have been the better choice to me, but he was good live as well because he gets to put some emphasis on certain spots that hit you harder.

I so love your reaction to this amazing song....it's become a holiday classic for many. At the end you ask "OH! Is this a REAL story?" The answer is: YES! It is....here is the backstory, which makes the whole thing even more beautiful: www.sj-r.com/story/entertainment/2020/12/07/same-old-lang-syne-dan-fogelbergs-old-lover-reflects-40-years-later/115115630/
