Howie was that sports fan that got the big break and it was well deserved. Stump the Schwab is total nostalgia. Loved seeing all the tributes to him this past weekend from former and current people that worked with him.

I worked on the same editorial floor with Howie from 1982-1987. This was before ESPN. He was involved with College and Pro Football Weekly. He worked with Mike Francesa and Russell Baxter. Howie took his work very seriously and was a very good person. I was saddened to find out that he had passed away.

I'll never forget Stump the Schwab, I was bummed when it went away, it was & still is my favorite sports trivia show ever made. The person that would face off with Howie at the end never stood a chance, lol, he literally knew it all... it was shocking when he'd miss a question. Thanks for the fun Howie #RIPLegend

God. Just a couple days ago an episode of Stump the Schwab came across my KZbin feed and I clicked so fast. Hadn’t seen that show in many years but I would always be sure to watch on the days I was home from school in time. It wasn’t until I read the comments, many of which offering condolences for him and his family, that I learned of Schwab’s passing. As many have already detailed in the comments here, Stump the Schwab was absolutely essential and classic ESPN content. It was an integral part of the love I developed for sports and many times my dad would call me “Schwab” given my enthusiasm for NBA and MLB trivia. Eternal thanks to Howie for the influence as well as developing and sharing his gift, in turn helping to make ESPN the juggernaut it was for all of us.
