I've always said: the guy was simply unstoppable! there was no way to defend him! If he made 22 or 18 pts per game it's simply because he wasn't good at shooting, not because he couldn't get past the defense that came in front of him. all you could do was put up as much resistance as possible and cross your fingers hoping he would fail.

If you are starting your franchze from zero and you have to start it all over again with 1 player before selecting anything else,Tim Duncan is one of the safest bets. The fans will love him,teammates will love him no matter who's on the team,he's very coachable and most importantly is a superstar on both ends of the floor but has no problem taking a step down if that's what the team needs. Perfect franchize cornerstone. You think of guys like Kobe and as great as he is I never know how is he going to get along with coaches,teammates and what's gonna happen once he starts to age. That's why I always think of Duncan. Great character,defensive anchor and a first option on a championship level team. All you need. The only place he lacks is in marketability but I'm fine with that. That's by choice...

He was the best ever at his main position while having plenty of good competition at PF (Dirk, Garnett, Webber, Gasol, Stoudamire). Arguably the best player of an entire decade (2000s). Only Russell and Jordan have more rings as the clear best player on their teams. Most all defensive teams ever and tied second most all NBA teams ever. Lead Spurs to a title in 03 with no elite teammates (D Rob was washed and Tony+Manu were not good yet.) Lead Spurs to a title in only his 2nd season. Also the Spurs never had a losing season or missed the playoffs with him on the team. That puts him on a list with very few all time greats. He did not have the flashy game and media hype of some but he stands among the absolute best to ever do it. I think his case for top 5 is extremely great.

@edwardmendoza44803 жыл бұрын
You had me there at the beginning, Dan, but halfway through the audio you started talking about Tim the way people talk about him today--with a perspective based on the back-end of his career. You asked about whether Duncan "dunked"? His whole prime was inundated with strong dunks at the basket. You mentioned him playing with great players like Manu and Tony, and coached by a great coach. Those players and coach excelled BECAUSE of Tim Duncan, not the other way around. Popovich was able to coach the team as he did BECAUSE Duncan allowed him to. Make no mistake...Tim Duncan was ALWAYS in control. Anybody who watched the Spurs from 97-07 would know that. There was no mythical "system"; there was only "4-Down." Plenty of game tape of the Spurs simply dumping it down to Duncan and letting him to go to work. Did the others contribute? Absolutely. They played their part just like the Worthy's, the Parish's, the McHale's, the Riley's, the Jackson's before them. But make no mistake...from the moment he set foot on that court, Tim Duncan was the cog that made that franchise into the dynasty it became. Just ask Will Perdue...ask Vinny DelNegro...ask Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr, Kevin Willis, David Robinson...the list goes on and on. They'll tell you the same thing. "We owe EVERYTHING to Tim Duncan." All-Star appearances in reality don't carry so much weight. Look at the REAL highlights of his career: 1st-Team All-NBA as a ROOKIE; Champion, Finals MVP, and league-MVP candidate by his Sophomore season; By his 10th season, he was a 4-time Champion, 3-time Finals MVP, and 2-time League MVP...already an all-timer in 10 years of play (that's Bird and Magic-esque); Finally, he was 29 seconds away from 6-0 in the Finals and 4 Finals MVPs, the only one to rival the great Michael Jordan's Finals resumé.

Nobody is mentioning the fact that he made the playoffs EVERY year. The Spurs were a title contender EVERY year he played. He brought a leadership and consistency that every team feared. @fortnitegod6987 Жыл бұрын
To add, It wasn’t like the Spurs were just a team that made the playoff, they were CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS, in arguably the most competitive conference of all time. When people say that he didn’t have a definitive peak, its because his championship window lasted his entire career. I always found it so metaphorical that his last game in the league was in the playoffs. No farewell tour, nothing big, just a tweet from the spurs. I believe that he is the most complete player of all time, starting from when he was drafted. Most players often develop into great players but Tim was great from the start, then won his first ring and finals mvp his 3rd year. He is greatness

@Rollly Canute I've been watching the NBA since the 1970's.... love Bird & Magic...... but you're correct Tim Duncan isn't the greatest player of all-time, but he's a lot closer to it than most people realize Wilt & Jabbar are better..... perhaps Jordan (closer than most think) but that's it. Duncan is better than Bird, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Julius, Abdul-Olajuwon, Oscar and even Bill Russell. 4th best player of all-time.
@bryankirkham82493 жыл бұрын
@@mateensharrieff3400 I completely agree. If I was starting a team with 1 player it would be Jordan but my 2nd choice would definitely be Duncan. People look at stats only. This guy did whatever was necessary to win and he made everyone around him much better. He got a lot of role players paid.

@anthonyzarate98073 жыл бұрын
@@mriwaschosentobegreat4084 Look at it this way...Kareem needed Magic & The Big O to win his titles. At best he is a co-star IMHO. Duncan did it without another superstar several times. In 2003 he did it almost by himself. The second leading score on the team for that playoff run was S. Jackson at 14.7ppg! Then in the closeout game of the finals he gets a quadruple (officially finished with 8 blocks because stat people can't do their job prooerly!) along with 21pts/20reb/10ast/10bk!!! Not too mention he held Kenyon Martin to 3-23 shooting and 6pts with almost 40 mins on the floor! Martin said Duncan was by far the hardest player to guard in his career. That shows how dominant and impactful Duncan was on both sides of the ball! Don't get me wrong, Kareem is still top 6 or 7 all-time IMHO.

Lol. Kobe and LeBron were easily better. Dwayne Wade was better at his peak by far. Steph is better. Durant is better. Duncan was a selfless leader and a great teammate. He also had the best coach and backcourt in the league. Parker and Ginobili are criminally underrated. Ask Kobe Bryant about TP and Manu. Robert Horry played with Dream and Duncan and he said Dream was 20x better. Hakeem WAS 20x better. Compare their skill levels. Duncan is top 10-12, but he is nowhere near the top 5. The top 5 of all-time are killers. They repeated as champs at LEAST once. Duncan never even lead his team to the Finals as the best guy two straight years, much less win them. Tony Parker was the best player on the 2007, 2013, and 2014 Spurs.

@@thsu8 yur a idiot! Rob Horry's comment was blasphemy! And he was referring to👉 (work ethic) He has always been a role player that jumped to title contenders to get his rings. Not saying it didn't have big shots in key moments but he was not the 1,2 or even 3rd opinion in any team he played on! His words are irrelevant.💯 👉David Robinson when asked who was better he said a more real answer.. "It's hard to say because both player's are extremely gifted and agile. Both have great foot work and positioning. I know ppl will take this as being bias and I know it comes off that way because Timmy is my teammate and we play together but I played against both these players and I have seen what both can do on the court. The only difference is I see alot more from Timmy because we practice together and we are teammates but since day 1 when I first played against Tim in practice and he was schooling me in every way and I was trying my best to play him and I know I'm a decent shot blocker but he was making it look to easy out there and he was just remarkable I knew he was special at that point! It's different you know.. when u see it and play against it is totally different. Both players are great! But I would have to say Timmy and that's my honest opinion." -David Robinson

@@thsu8 Tim Duncan was the best player since Michael Jordan and Jordan has said this in the early 2000 at his basketball youth camp when asked who was the best player outside. Yrs later at another one of his youth camps this time in the gym he was asked again by another large group of kids but this time they asked who was better between LeBron or Kobe? And Michael Jordan first response he said was "Don't sleep on Timmy!"💯😂😂😂 Why did Michael Jordan put Tim Duncan's name in there when the kids were asking who was better between LeBron and Kobe? It's because Michael Jordan has always considered Duncan the best. Jordan is a winner. Look at Tim Duncan's resume! It speaks greatness! Highest winning percentage of All Major Sport's during his career can not be over looked. Neither can his 50+winning seasons for 19yrs straight. Or his winning percentage against every NBA team in the league. These are all 🐐 like accomplishments! Plus He never missed the playoffs his entire career that is 19yrs straight! These do have weight when talking about how great a player was and what was he worth to his team and franchise. "The only stats that matter are winning game's and title's!" -Michael Jordan 👉 It's because he's a winner. "Greatness recognizes greatness." 💯✌️

My greatest team I’ve ever witnessed with my own eyes Pg- magic, most beautiful passer I’ve ever seen Sg- jordan, just magnificent Sf- Larry bird, like he was just the best player when he was healthy, just the greatest shooter ever. Steph is good but he needs space, bird needed nothing and would tell you where he was going to shoot it Pf- duncan, what can you say he was dominant on offense and defense. He was so skilled and talented but was so quiet you just think he defense wasn’t being played on him C- this is a tough on but I’ll give Hakeem the nod because he was a ballerina playing the center position. Shaq was the most ferocious player when he was near the basket but he lacked footwork and touch on his shots
