I like most of the Slott run, but agree with your criticisms. I really love his pace, the balance of action, and the new ideas he brings, but Peter himself is corny. Especially when he went through the phase where "No one dies." became his catchphrase. I also left the book when they turned him into an Elon Musk type. I loved him working as an inventor, but HATED him being a CEO. Not only is that something Peter would never become ethically, it's also something he should never even have a chance at becoming. He's supposed to be unlucky, low-profile, and neighborhood based. His best story arc was the one without Peter. Superior is one of my all time favorites and Big Time was a fresh direction with good supporting characters that I wish lasted longer. Some of the little stories, like the one with Lizard were good too.

I completely agree that he doesn't understand Peter Parker. A lot of characters felt too much like parodies of themselves sometimes, and you said it well that it's because it feels like he's writing characters in Glee or Big Bang Theory. I like a lot of his ideas through Superior, but the sitcom-ness is what it is, and I can't think of a whole lot post Superior that I cared for except maybe the Red Goblin stuff at the end. I don't mind the Spider-verse concept, but it's something that should be used very sparingly like a once in a decade or so kind of thing, and I hate how every other major attention grabbing story about Spider-Man in any medium now is when it's a multiverse story. Spider-Man is not a multiverse level character, and while I don't think he should never be in those stories, they shouldn't be anywhere close to a normal thing he deals with. Towards the last few years of his run, his work just devolved into the writings of someone chronically on Twitter (something waaaay too many people in entertainment in general do far too often), because I remember so many times where things that would happen in an issue were basically just responses to comments on Twitter or videos on KZbin as if he were using his professional work in place of a reply on social media itself. It's cringe when anybody does, it's super unprofessional, and way too many creators in comics, film and TV have done this over the last decade. It needs to stop. His stuff is hit or miss, and I feel like I either loved it or hated it. Anotther thing Slott and many other storytellers have gotten wrong over the last couple decades is that ever since Ultimate Spider-Man with Bendis started, people write him and his sense of humor like he's Chandler Bing from FRIENDS, and he simply isn't and shouldn't be. Nothing in between. Ramos's art is great when he's more reserved, but sometimes I think his anatomy gets a little wonky. He portrays a great sense of motion and expression, though. Camuncoli is perfection imo. He needs more work and recognition.

For me, I’ve read from Dan Slott’s run when he became full time writer (basically Big Time to Go Down Swinging). I enjoy Spider-Island fine, Spider-Verse was great in my opinion and Superior Spider-Man is one of my favorite comics. But I will admit all of the in-between stuff ranges from eh to not really good. Especially when Parker Industuries era Spider-Man can along, I wasn’t a fan of it. After Spider-Verse, Slott really should’ve left the book or hell, even when Superior ended, he should’ve left. Nothing against the guy, but I’m glad he’s moving on to Iron Man and Fantastic Four. Honestly, I really prefer the JMS run and Ultimate Spider-Man over most of Slott’s run. Glad I’m reading Nick Spencer’s run now (it’s really enjoyable).

@MysticalGreenBeanie2 жыл бұрын
Well, I hoped my points in the video were clear, but alas LOL. - Heavy emphasis on the "big time superhero" aspect of Peter's mythos, as opposed to relationship drama. - Relationship drama, when written, is not good. - His "take" on Peter Parker is incredibly inconsistent with the character as they were written in all the previous runs. And in a lot of ways, regresses him dramatically.

Well I know alot of people are gonna disagree with me, but whatever. I really liked the idea of Peter Parker being a C.E.O. Because we finally see Peter Parker at his full potential not Spider-Man but Peter Parker. Dan Slott's run on Amazing Spider-Man and Superior Spider-Man, pave way into one of the greatest movies of all time for me. (I'm talking about Into the spider-verse) If it wasn't for Dan Slott, we wouldn't have got Spider-Gwen, Silk, etc. So I think Dan Slott is one of the greatest writers I have ever seen in my life, because he gave us something we the fans haven't seen on Peter Parker.
@goldenstatewarriors94183 жыл бұрын
K I disagree. Dan Slott does not know how to write Spider-Man. He knows how to write Doctor Octopus, and a bunch of other shitty characters he created that noone cares about. Peter being a C.E.O. could have been a great idea but was stupid, because of Slott's abysmal writing. He acts like Tony Stark Jr. He's cocky and arrogant in a way completely unlike Peter Parker. He's a mess, not because he can't keep his life together because of overwhelming responsibility, but because he's just an idiot and a clown. Peter also didn't even build Parker Industries, Doc Ock did. Spidey's humor was replaced with annoyingness and worst of all, straight out whining all the time, and unable to be a hero, always needing to be saved by someone else. His Peter Parker doesn't feel like Peter at all. He ruined MJ, he ruined Black Cat, he ruined Ben Reilly, he ruined Peter. Quesada is more responsible for Spider-Man's decline, because he created the god-awful One More Day that put us in this mess, but Slott taking over as the writer was what destroyed any hope for Spider-Man.

If only we knew how bad things were going to get. No the biggest fan of Dan's ten year but I can say I like half of everything he did. Spencer tried but editorial screwed him over(though even with that caveat he could have done more than just retconning retcons). Chip Zdarsky spectacular and else worlds comics were pretty good but he didn't want ASM(plus editorial would probably screw with him). And now the "solo" Zeb Wells Nick Lowe run(half of this is Lowe's fault for sure), which is just awful. JRJr’s art is a downgrade compared to his ASM run back with JMS and DC rebirth all star batman, artists Patrick gleason and ed McGuinness feel wasted on awful out of character and genuine unfunny writing. Some how the Nick Lowe(Zeb Wells is probably a journeyman writer at this point) run of spiderman has done more damage than OMD/Quesada could ever hope to dream.

Another thing about the run: when Dan Slott goes into total fan mode, sometimes I'm okay with it (nods or elements from past continuity) and sometimes I'm not (okay, I get it, Dan. Lol no dan Slott run is actually pretty good. I mean come on you know what this is. This is the typical reactionary fanboyisms. Fans in general not just fans of comics hate change and these characters have been around for almost 60 years so every new writer who comes along is going to do new and cool things with the character. Fanboys and there hatred for things is almost like the life cycle of a bug you know from pupae to larvae to fly fanboys are the same way. Dan Slott comes along and changes the character in new and exciting ways and all the fanboys start losing their shit they hate everything about it they send death threats go crazy demonize dan Slott but then a new writer comes along and kinda sets everything back to normal because that's how comics work you can play and have fun but you always have to put the toys back in the toy box and when the next writer comes along and reverts everything back to the status quo the fanboys fall in love and praise the new writer as a sort of messiah or second coming. Making videos about how the new writer is "redeeming spiderman". In this case that new writer is nick Spencer but here's the thing Spencer is only reverting things back to the status quo because he has his own ideas for new and exciting places he wants to take the character and when inevitably starts doing that the fanboys will go with it for maybe 1 story arch but if nick doesn't stop at 1 story arch (which he won't) the fanboys will start turning on him also and so on and so forth for the next writer and the next and the next. This is the life cycle of a fanboys anger
@MysticalGreenBeanie5 жыл бұрын
This is a nice theory...except for the fact that it's flawed on the basis that I don't like change. True, I'm a Spider-Man fanboy, but that doesn't mean I want to see the character stagnate. People grow, change and evolve all the time. And I love when characters in comics do the same. No, my problem with Dan Slott's run is that he doesn't execute many of his ideas in ways that are interesting, or consistent with the character of Peter Parker. It's not "what" Dan Slott did, it's "how" he did it.
@goldenstatewarriors94183 жыл бұрын
This is the ramblings of an idiot who doesn't know how to make an argument and so uses the laziest and most overused and debunked statements: "Toxic fans." We've never been averse to change, thats a myth perpetuated by Slott himself. Everyone loved the 60's-80's BECAUSE the character changed and progressed. We hate the story's that try to bring everything back to the status quo like the Clone Saga and One More Day. Look at the JMS run, THAT's how you do change and development for a character correctly, you fucking idiot. Then Quesada ruined it all with One More Day, resetting everything back to the 70's status quo minus Mary Jane. And its the most hated storyline ever. Think before making baseless allegations. I thought there was a limit to how idiotic people like you could be. People don't like Slott because its boring, stupid, makes Peter a clown stagnates the character, makes him a cocky-ass idiot, and ruins MJ, Black Cat, Ben Reilly, the list goes on forever! Dan Slott does not write Spider-Man. He knows how to write Doctor Octopus, but not Peter Parker. Slott wrote a total of one great story in his 10 years that was about Peter, and that was his last story. And sorry to correct you, but you clearly know absolutely nothing about the comic industry. When Spencer was put on Spider-Man, people freaked the hell out, because he was the one who did Secret Empire. Then once they saw it was really really good, they praised him because his first 25 issues gave us a damn Spider-Man story that was good for once, something we almost never got from Slott. It repaired all the damage done by Slott, so of course everyone was happy.

Yeah but Slott's character interpretation sucked and most of his stories were garbage. Different is fine, but just because something is different doesn't automatically make it great. You want different, read the JMS run! That's how you do character growth and different interpretation in a way that makes sense.
