Special thanks to Godzilla Mendoza as Spider-Man! / @godzillamendoza
This week is a look at Spider-Man villain Venom and how his initial burst of popularity led to a series of stories by different creative teams that took the character in some very silly directions. He also gained more and more superpowers until he was pretty much the most powerful character in all of comics for a moment in 1996.

There is just no corporate office with the buying power to get new movies or do updates. Those that are left have to be able to buy new movies on their own. I remember there was a story where Venom was hunting some bad guy, forgot who, and Spiderman saw him randomly. Spidey assumed Venom was up to no good and attacked him. Venom tried to explain while they were fighting but Spidey wasn't listening, and because of them a crane collapsed onto a building I think and there was an explosion. Spiderman helped who he could and Venom was going to take that opportunity to leave, but he saw a woman trapped in a burning room. He literally threw the entire symbiote through the glass, into the fire and enveloped the woman completely in the symbiote in a big black goey ball only connected to Brock by his hands. With tremendous pain and grief Brock in his boxers yanked them out of room. The symbiote was still on fire and in a lot of pain, the woman was saved, grateful, and thanked Brock, Brock was like "it's cool, you're welcome" and the symbiote turned into a jacket with his hood up and he quietly disappeared into the crowd with Spiderman still at the scene looking for him, pissed that he got away.

It should also be known that Venom was not a coward, he showed up at Aunt May's house once but only to challenge Peter Parker, stating that Aunt May had nothing to do with their vendetta and thus he wouldn't attack her. VERY different from the how the Character appeared in several of the more recent Spider-man cartoon series.

@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 5 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand, just as many writers did afterwards. His "affection" toward Aunt May was another means to torture Spider-Man. He's showing that he knows where both his wife and his aunt live. His comment about her being "so...innocent" was to point out how helpless she'd be if he decided to attack her. When Spider-Man went to the Baxter Building to ask for help, he arrived at his aunt's house to find Brock helping with the laundry. "That's right. This is between us. Not the Fantastic Four." In other words, he was warning Peter that if he went for help again, SOMEONE was going to suffer for it. Brock was not a nice guy. Remember the reason he hates Spider-Man is simply because he caught the Sin-Eater. This revealed that the guy Brock declared was the Sin-Eater was nothing but Stan Carter's crazy neighbor. Spider-Man saved Betty Brant and J. Jonah Jameson from being killed and Brock hated him for it. Brock couldn't accept that he was the one who made the mistake by not looking into the situation deeper or, more importantly, just telling the cops. He HAD to write the big scoop. He ruined his own career.

This is why I love Venom's concept: the symbiote isn't inherently good or evil, it simply learns behavior from its hosts. From Peter, it got a sense of justice and its sense of humor. But Peter's rejection, despite the symbiote saving him in the original story, felt betrayed. With Brock, it had a sense of vengeance and anger, making it a desperately scary foe to deal with. When Brock was dying many years later, the symbiote met Gargan. Admittedly nothing much happened other than a sense of freedom, no longer bound to a weakening dying host. Together they went on crime sprees and few skirmishes until the government managed to take the symbiote. Finally we have Thompson Venom. Flash manages to 'tame the beast' so to speak, and teaches the symbiote mercy and discipline. I like Venom's character because of how that character has grown over the years. For a powerful, frighening looking monster, it's got a great personality that literally evolves with each new ally it bonds to. And you can see how its past has molded its persona. It's undeniably why Venom is my favorite Marvel character. But sadly the movies just don't seem to get that. :/

Actually, it's really not evil, but still violent, corrupting, malicious, etc. And yes, naturally. The symbiote god created the symbiotes to be that way. Some symbiotes were influenced by their hosts, they defeated their creator, they invented the lie that their race was initially good.

I met Venom in the Spider-Man (2000) Video Game for PS1. He was, at first, a crazy chaotic Villain that kidnaps Mary-Jane Parker and uses her as bait to get vengeance on Spidey for a allegedly breaking Eddy Brock's Camera (it was actually Mysterio disguised as Spider-Man). However, Spider-Man corrects this misunderstanding by punching Venom until he understands that Mysterio and whomever he is working for are to blame. Vemon then becomes a goofy, black humored partner to Spider-Man, causing as many problems as he helps Spidey solve, and ultimately together they bungle their way to defeat the big-bad villain together! (It was Dr. Octopus and Carnage teamed up... they got their butts kicked) Vemon was this strange, alien like being who's morality was as twisted as his own mind, constantly flipping between good and bad like a crazy animal! I LOVE Vemon in that game and it really did an amazing jump of distilling and displaying his twisted nature!

@giftofgab247 No one ever said that Venom was all comedy even in the beginning he says Venom was kind of a goofball. The point isn't that Venom was never violent but a lot of his most violent feats were against Spider-Man/Peter Parker or people he was close to, one of the ways my friends and I described Venom's and Spidey's relationship was using the movie Single White Female or saying he was a seriously pissed off ex. Like it or not most of the grim,dark and gritty th Venom spoke of never happened or wasn't as bad as he led on it would be. Wether this is what McFarlane intended or not isn't important all we have to go on is what did occur. Venoms interactions with the world at large were more fish out of water learning what did s good, Spidey always riled him up even when working together Venom might through the mission to take a shot at Spidey. Being dangerous doesn't mean he didn't have more to him than that and it seems one of Todds biggest flaws with characters was.always telling us how dangerous they were instead of actually showing us something even Stan Lee called him and Liefield out on.
@wereflipper
@wereflipper 5 жыл бұрын
@@gwolf0065 I get what you are saying and you make some fair points he could have been more specific about how Venom was a bit goofy but my main point was just being glad that someone else even noticed that Venom was kind of off for a brutal bad-ass character. Some goofy, weird, bizarre thing Venom has done: 1. Getting into the whole being Carnage's parent thing(calling son-o-mine, prodigal son and so on), this actually seemed to make Venom very upset it didn't like that Carnage was a mass murderer but teamed up with him the moment it looked like they could beat spider-man( almost any book from the 90s with both will likely have some acknowledgement f this), 2. Stopped fighting Spidey after going on a rampage and almost killing Eddie Brocks wife(Eddie Brock was.able to convince.him killing Spider-man wasn't important anymore because of this-big softie), 3. Moved to San Francisco to protect homeless people to prove he could be a better hero than Spider-Man. 4. More recently 2013 the Venom mobile 5. Calling civilians innocents and criminals various names like scum, baddies and such, why make the distinction if.he was a hyper-violent murder-machine? 6. Got a dog stuck in his eye (Mac Gargan Venom). 7. Pretended to be a nun while working for the government (Big Mamas Venom or Venom Act 3). 8.tried to kill the Thing (who was trying to help Spider-Man) with a french kiss yes made him choke on his tongue. 9.Quoted SNL with the Hulk to call out Carnage and Doctor Bad Vibes.10. The symbiote itself tried to merge Peter and Eddie cause it wanted them both. 11. Mac Gargan Venom actually ate brains because Mac was so mentally bent, Eddie was able to keep it inline because symbiotes need some chemical in the brain to live.Eddie used the adrenaline created by his cancer and chocolate. Mac just said whatever and ate brains specifically humans ( the brains don't need to be human just to produce the chemical). Last thing because this could continue, chocolate addiction yes the chemical the symbiote needed to live could also be found in chocolate.

@@technodude458 David Michelinie's original story for Venom was about a pregnant woman who was about to give birth and her husband Is trying to flag down a cab to take them to the hospital. But In that same part of the city, Spider-Man Is fighting someone and the cab driver that the husband Is trying to get the attention of Is distracted by the battle and accidentally hits the husband, killing him. The woman goes Into labor right there as she watches her husband get run over. She loses her child and her mind. She's Institutionalised and eventually gains back her sanity, but she does blame Spider-Man for the deaths of her husband and baby. The Alien symbiote would find her, bind with her, and together they would set out on a mission to kill Peter Parker for hurting them both. Michelinie had set up the character a few times In Web Of Spider-Man. In Web Of Spider-Man #18, a hand pushes Peter onto the subway tracks just as a train Is flying by. He gets out of the way just In time but Is a little worried that something got past his Spider-Sense, as a trait of the Symbiote, It doesn't set It off. Another time was In Web Of Spider-Man #24, when Peter Is hanging off the side of a building and we see a hand grabbing his leg, sending him falling to the ground. Now, as cool as that sounds, Editor, Jim Salicrup didn't think readers would see a woman as a physical threat to Spider-Man, even with an alien symbiote on her side. So, Michelinie came up with the Eddie Brock angle, and the rest Is history.

You see, this touches on why I am so happy to see that the current Venom film caught on. Divorcing the character from its supposed inseparability from Spidey in the public eye like this is a brilliantly simple way to refresh and renew the character without totally abandoning the original key elements that made the character so endearing to earlier audiences. It will be easy to later add in the rivalry with Spidey, and they inevitably will, but at that point we'll have Venom/Ed already standing on their own in a way that won't be diminished by the reintroduction of the original origin. I really look forward to seeing just where this new iteration is headed.

Venom was one of my favourite characters from the Spider-man comics. I had many, many of those expensive limited series. I grew to be very frustrated with how different creative teams were presenting him. He would be written to do things out of character or be drawn in really odd ways. Their was no consistency or respect for the character. Worse, there was no respect for reader. Venom might have been the last Marvel comic that I dropped at the time. I held on to those limited series for decades. A few years ago, I let it go and gave them away. It was a good feeling. I think I kept The Madness (Anne Nocceti is a great writer) and Lethal Protector.

Yes the switch to Kelly Jones' art for that series was jarring. It was probably one of the earliest times I was exposed to his exaggerated art style. I've since grown to appreciate his style when it comes to his horror genre books, but within the super-hero genre it often seems out of place. I think I kept the madness because it feels like such a different and disturbing story. It also gives Eddie a bit of a love story... complete with a gory, giant tongue, face-licking kiss. Which goes over as well as you'd expect. So many of those limited series were throw away stories and ideas. The Madness has stuck in my head for being really good at showing just how deranged it depicts everything.

Funny thing, I hated The Madness when I was young. Then I was going through my old collection, and I reread it and love it now. I think the art style and story was a lot to take because of the manic switching of creative teams and I think by itself, the Madness was a fun read. Honestly, I wish they stretched Lethal Protector to an ongoing. I love the concept of a Super Villian's approach to being a Superhero. I really see Lethal Protector and Mark Bagley's 90s Venom as Venom at his peak.

That credit belongs to Blockbuster itself," said Jonathan Salem Baskin, a former Blockbuster marketing communications executive). In 2011, its remaining 1700 stores were bought by Dish Network. Dish maintained a small number of Blockbuster franchise agreements, allowing some stores to remain open. By January 2018, the company's website listed nine remaining franchise-owned stores in the U.S., including six in Alaska, two in Oregon, and one in Texas. By August, the only store left was in Bend, Oregon.

Venom got me into comics. I joined in the perfect time (ASM #297) I still have issue #300 as it is my most sentimental issue. Venom knew everything about Spidey, knew his family and was stronger. In the early issues, Spidey ALWAYS had to outsmart him and ALWAYS had to neutralize him. I think Eddie Brock had a sense of justice, but, was a jerk. He was the opposite of Spidey. They ruined him and symbiotes in the later 90s, and I wish they brought it back to that concept. I also love the idea of Spidey not really being good enough to beat Carnage and having to begrudgingly team up with Venom.

The 2016-2018 run also solidifies it with even greater depth as they they've been together through trials and tribulations and explore that. Theyre learning to love. I missed a lot of the churned out Venom comics, so I think I was saved. Eddie Brock Venom is the only Venom I like, and they're one of my favorite spidey villains - probably because my memories of them are purely the early Eddie Brock ones before he became so overused - I love the dark, irresponsible version of Spiderman that has an addiction-like bond and dependency to their powers as opposed to Peter, who would probably have been happier without and has two fully functioning and seperate identities for in and our of costume. From the OG comics I read during that run, the suit took his body for joyrides, making him tired during the day, but did not affect or influence Peter's aggression. I believe that trait first appeared in the Spiderman TAS cartoon from the 90s, where it become so ingrained and well known that most people nowadays assume the suit always enhanced aggression, hence why that trait has been part of every iteration of the character going forward. Mike Noir I appreciate the point but it doesn’t require him to have a PG-13 rating, either. Yes, Eddie is more edgelord than actual killer. But a benefit an R rating could provide is that it frees up the humor to be more adult, something the Deadpool movies took advantage of. Is it necessary to have an R rating? No, but I doubt very much it would have hurt and would have probably benefitted a character whose fan base is primarily edgelords themselves (adult edgelords at that!) And just to clarify, I’m speaking specifically in regards to Venom and not all properties. An R rated HeMan or Power Rangers (overall wholesome properties made to target a particularly young audience) would be a total cringe-fest; just watch any of the fan made trailers/movies for proof! ;)

He isnt a brainless savage, but he still kills and eats people. That's violent enough to warrant an R rating to me.

Thanks for making this! This was a great video. I never knew there was so much history to Venom. Godzilla Mendoza made a fun cameo as Spider-Man. I feel like Venom being overpowered and overhyped was just a 90s issue in general.

I genuinely like silly, goofball Venom. I don't care for the edgy, overly serious stuff; but it isn't bad sometimes. I think he's pretty fun when done right.
