Love this cover and, of course, the wonderful Dan Vasc! This song also converted me into a huge Sabaton fan. The song is about the Swiss Guard who, to this day, guard the Vatican and the Pope. The last stand of the Swiss Guards took place during the Sack of Rome in 1527. They guarded the rescue route of the Pope to prevent his capture.

The song is about the sack of Rome in 1527. The "189" who "gave their lives on the steps to Heaven" were the soldiers of the Swiss Guard -- who gave their lives in defense of the Vatican and the Pope - allowing him to escape.
