My Dan Wesson ECP was having the same slide lock problem. During the 500 round break-in period I was cleaning it every 50 rounds and over oiling it which was fine. I finally found out it was the drop of oil I put between the slide stop and the frame during reassembly that was not allowing the slide stop to seat all the way up into slide stop notch in the slide holding the slide open on the last round. Simply omitting that drop of oil cured the problem.

Bought a Specialist commander last year. Everyone was telling me to get one in 9mm but I couldn't bring myself to do it so 45 it was. The thing shoots like a dream and it's stupid accurate. I have never shot any commander or found one that balances better FOR ME than the Specialist. Great video as always.

I recently bought into the 1911 platform and 45ACP caliber with the Dan Wesson Specialist and now I've got the itch for a commander sized 1911 in 45 ACP. The TCP looks really cool for concealed carry and has the rail e.t.c. but I keep going back to the specialist. Some kimbers look/sound great too but I've heard mixed reviews.

Thanks Justin, for the great review. I just bought one chambered in 9mm last weekend, and the first two magazines I fired, the slide failed to lock open when the last round was fired. Also, the mag became stuck in the frame and wouldn't come free without some pretty tough love. I was only using the included DW mags. During some dry-firing using snap caps, the slide fails to lock open about 8 times out of ten, and when it does manage to lock open, the slide stop is barely engaging (as you showed in your video). I sure wish I would have watched your review before I bought it. I sent it in for CZ USA to repair. The gunsmith called me when he received the gun, and told me he would be able to get it adjusted properly. He seems like a really good guy, and offered to work a replacement if I preferred, but he told me he could get it adjusted properly, so I just opted for a repair. I hope he is right. Thanks again. Really nice review.

@@nitemare5030 That's what I heard too but when I got a DW Specialist three years ago it had issues right out of the box. The thumb safety wasn't fit correctly and failed a basic function check, the grip safety wasn't fit correctly and wouldn't disengage without a super tight grip, the "stainless" parts rusted even after cleaning and oiling. At a price point of $1,700-$2,000 that's unacceptable, maybe I just got a lemon but I'm not going to take that chance again. Next rime I'm going with Les Baer or Springfield Armory Custom Shop. Justin, try a new slide stop to correct the issue. Hickok45 was having a similar issue with his DW Guardian .45 and it now functions flawlessly. The TCP and the ECP are great offerings from Dan Wesson. I've shot both and they each offer different features depending on what you're looking for in a 1911 for EDC. Personally, I carry the Dan Wesson Vigil Commander .45 or my Guardian in .38 Super. IF you can find a Dan Wesson in your gun shop, I definitely recommend that you seriously consider buying it. You won't be sorry! Remember, when you buy a DW new, the recommended break-in is 300-500 rounds. (It is a tightly-fitted 1911 and NOT a Glock! IT REQUIRES more maintenance and TLC to run optimally. Recoil spring maintenance IS required as well...) Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and lubing the pistol during the break-in period (every 50-100 rds fired)
@rudrashakti108
@rudrashakti108 Жыл бұрын
Good comment. I have the DW ECP in 45 ACP. I followed the break in-instructions to the letter. The check mate mags that came with it, plus the check mate mags I bought that have the non flush fit bottom, worked flawlessly from day one. The mecgar mags needed a break in period since they tended to not allow the slide to go into battery on the last round. After packing them with rounds and leaving them for a few weeks like that, now they work fine. Wilson combat mags also needed the same treatment otherwise they didn't allow the slide to go into battery on the last round. This included the 10 round WC mag I got. As of now, all mags work, as does the gun, with any ammo. And again with the checkmate mags the gun was always flawless from day one. People who do reviews need to know what the hell they are doing.

It's fun to review handguns I'm sure. But, the reality is...there really aren't any poorly made 1911's. Is there any 1911 that just can't not stove-pipe 1 out of 8 rounds? Usually not. When there IS failure it's usually user error. Limp wrist-ing or bad ammo. Many are happy with a budget RIA 1911. Metro Arms. The difference is in the finishing work and accessories (e.g. what kind of sights it comes with, does it have a flared mabwell? etc.)...made of alum? Steel? Carbon steel? Custom guns allegedly have no wobble in the trigger/slide to frame fit...One brand has more cache...another maybe have a sharp butt, round or bobtail...etc. In the end it comes down to how much do we have to spend on one gun and who's marketing we bought into. Or didn't. There's no magic 1911 that will make us able to do 1 MOA groups at 25 yards on a moving target....better to spend money on range time and qualified coaching. Any handgun is only as accurate as the shooter is skilled...enough. As in any sport. John McEnroe...ex-pro tennis player used to compete with cheap wood rackets while the others used rackets with special composite material and tech. He still became one of the best in history.

Cheap 1911s have no longevity. For people who like 1911s that don't shoot alot they could work ok. Guys like me that put 30k or more through my 1911s a year they won't cut it ask me how I know. Also the cheaper made guns are fit like garbage. That's something you wont notice until you own a semi custom or custom gun. I've never met a person who has owned or shot Nighthawk, Wilson, Alchemy, Ed Brown, or a full house custom gum and decided their RIA or citadel was a better gun because its not. Lastly I've been to well over 150 training courses between department in service training and national level instructors like Will Petty, Steve Fisher, Chris Costa, Bill Blowers, Chuck Pressburg etc. I can 100% say I've NEVER seen a gun cheaper than a Springfield TRP out of the box make it through a 2-5 day 800-1000 round class. Buy once cry once and you'll own it for a lifetime.

This was the worst 1400 I ever spent. Not including ammo trying to break it in. Love the looks just poor engineering in my opinion. The feed ramp is too steep causing fail to feed issues. Also beats up your ammo when you load and unload. Eventually that first round of expensive 45acp carry ammo will be trash. Tried only Wilson mags. In my opinion Springfield is the best in this price range.
