Dana 44 axle upgrades, adding a spool and some chromoly shafts

This week we are replacing my Detroit TrueTrac in my front Dana 44 axle with a spool. The TrueTrac has let me down in the hard core stuff too many times. We are also installing some chromoly axles shafts and some new seals and bearings.

A spool is cool, but completely locked can lead to crunches. At least you can select a 3 wheel drive option (keeping 1 hub unlocked) Until you really need both front tires in action. That's the way that Craig's red flat top willys is.

I plan on running 3wd most of the time.... At least until I get some hydro assist.

Hi , Question spool on front diff how is steering wheels to make turns ?

Steering is rough until hydro assist is added. It isn't the turning radius it is just hard to get them to turn. It might have helped the turning radius because both front tires pull

Time will tell. Hydro assist is in my future plans for sure though.

The spool makes a huge difference. I love it.

@@DaddyJeepGarage so as long as the lock outs are not engaged the hubs should free spin acting in 2 wheel drive for great on road steering unless you lock the hubs then its full time 4 wheel drive. Is this correct?

@@stankycobra741 yes. With the hubs unlocked it goes down pavement just fine. I added hydro assist to help with steering when it is locked in.
