Question: were shim behind bearing on pinion?? I had one on mine on 2001 doge ram 2500 I'm buying all new parts cause pinion rounded from last owner like weiner rubbed bad,mmm

This doesn't use a crush sleeve, it uses shims

If only you had shown the process, did you remove the seal each time to change a shim in the preload process?

I have ring on the outside why didn't you put any on the outside of race

My caps have a N on them how do I tell what is top or bottom of an N

It doesn't matter. They should be turned 90 degrees from one another, so one will look like an N and the other a Z

I've always assumed they were 3.54, now I need to either look at the video or go pull the cover back off.

I was going to pretend I counted the teeth during the video, but we all know I'm too lazy for that. At about 8 seconds in, you can see the pinion is stamped "47 12" which is a legit tooth count for the ring and pinion in a Dana 44.

I think you forget the crush sleeve..

Thankfully the Dana 44 didn't start using a crush sleeve until much later than this axle (I don't know what year, but definitely after this 1978). Preload on this one is set with shims.

I've got 98 tj with dana 44, what spider gears would be better for highway, higher from what I have. I have a sloppy lunchbox to remove first.

You probably have a 3.73 ring and pinion. It depends on tire size, but you could probably go to a 3.55, 3.23 or even 3.07. You will lose low end torque as you do, and you have to do both axles

Yes, the gear ratio in the front and rear differentials must match

Pinion seal in backwards?

No, this is correct. The Dana 44 is a little odd, but the easy way to tell is that the seal lip has a tension spring around it. That spring goes inside the differential when assembled.
