"have a hanging device in case the job gets too bad,,,,,,,,, " "make sure we are well lubed before we give her the shaft....." Love the sense of humor... Very professional of you to do the little things like cleaning off the extra rust, etc. After all it lessens likelihood of seal damage. Good on you.

Was looking for a video covering the removal and installation of the carrier in a Dana 60 but all the videos I found always stopped after they pulled the axles. Decided to give this video a watch and wouldn't you know, the Dana 44 looks just the same as the 60, just a little smaller. Appreciate your video, it is very thorough and full of great tips. I now have the assurance I needed to remove and install my carrier so I can replace my inner tube seals. 👍

The public who bring their cars in for repair have no idea the investment in tooling it takes to run a repair shop. The introduction of solid state electronics has made this even worse. Your attention to detail is impressive.

I want to commend you on your attention to cleaning the bolt threads and mating surfaces of the parts going to be reused. Many mechanics do NOT. It does take time, but I have always found that it is worth it. Common sense stuff actually. Just because you got it out of the hole alright doesn't mean you won't strip it on the way back in. Good working ethics pal !

nice and useful video - preload adjustment (specifically by hand) really needs experience....In my case I counted down the threads before I removed the nut and also marked the yoke/nut position. Reinstalled it the same way, now I can hear some whining in the diff only when coasting and I also can feel a play at the pinion - guess I'd need to tighten the nut a tad more to zero play and check the preload - yoke should be easily turned then without having an inch pounds wrench - your thoughts ? thanks !
@farmboy30117
@farmboy30117 7 жыл бұрын
Great video Will! One question, why would it be important that the drive shaft is aligned to the pinion flange the way it came off? I noticed someone had marked it in the past. After watching this video, I'm a little worried about the pinion on my project truck since I replaced the pinion seal but didn't mark anything. I guess I need to get one of those in-lb torque wrenches ;)
@robinsonsauto
@robinsonsauto 7 жыл бұрын
its just "Fail safe" Practice to put back as removed. i have done many in the past without marking. its a balanced thing if the drive train was balanced as a unit. however i wouldn't worry to much about the yoke being on the same, not even a second thought to be honest. however marking the nut and pinion that is a great technique. yes your most accurate method is to measure preload with a touque whench. don't worry to much about the flange to shaft 50/50 shot if it has vibration try turning

Nice work will, you really do know rear differentials, have you worked in a transmission garage? I have never seen shellac used before, did you use it on all the seals? what is it used for?
@robinsonsauto
@robinsonsauto 7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Dean thank you, yes I grew up in a family owned repair shop, my Dad specialized in rebuilding transmissions, engines, essentially anything in the drivetrain. I later followed suit, It can be very labor intensive though turned into a love hate relationship for me over the years lol But its rewarding, brings me back. Schelac gasket sealant compound is more old school. Dries harder has it's place, kinda faded out with new technology. Thanks again

Would it been a good idea to put that shellac stuff on the outside of the oil seals before setting them in the axle tube. What was the shellac stuff. Thanks. Good video.

200 jeep cherokee xj Will a broken leaf spring shackle bracket cause the rear end to be a little off enough to where you can hear a noise in the rear end? I have replace Ring Gear and what i call cluster bearing with what i know was a good set up out of my other Jeep with the same ratio. New axle bearing, no help. I thought well has to be pinion bearing then i thought will that broken shackle bearing cause that rear end to be off centered and make a noise???

Ugh a low pinion dana 30 I HATE LP Dana 30 they literally give the Dana 30s a bad rep cause I've had 8 xjs and I can tell anyone short of about 38"-40" and up tires the high pinion Dana 30 is such an underrated axle it's a shame and let me tell you I've got one right now trussed, c-gussets, inner welded in tube sleeves with WJ knucle and brake upgrade locked up and it's a hulk of an axle for a non 1 ton non full width axle for the abuse and tires it runs with zero signs of fatigue but I see the LP Dana 30s and I get sick to my stomach🤢
