I have to do this on a 99 cherokee that I picked up a couple of months ago. This is the 2nd video I've watched, and I will be using this one as my reference. Detailed, and easy to follow and everything's been visible to me. The other one was harder to follow, so thank you!

This is a great video - Thanks to you I just replaced both rear axle bearings on my '99 Cherokee XJ. Trickiest bit was getting the new bearings/seals in - that took some hammering! This is a great guide for someone who hasn't done the job before, and really appreciated. Also it really helped that you identified the tools used and the Lucas Oil etc... I couldn't rent the slide-hammer/remover here in the UK, but I was able to buy them and it's still cheaper than a repair shop! - thank you!

Really not complicated. Hardest part is the seized bolts. Be very careful with heating bolts. Of course I cannot recommend using fire near your fuel areas!

Great video but let me ask , I have a 1984 jeep Cherokee pioneer with select-trac. I guess this video does not apply to the select-trac model ? the gearing in the differential housing was more complicated than in this video so I decided not to proceed any further. Thanks Spinner

A 1984 cherokee had a different axle. Probably an AMC 35 or Dana 35. Mine in this video is a Chrysler 8.25

Hi there, fantastic work, i'll be using your video as a walkthrough, but i have a Dana 35. Just wondering if you've done the inner seals as well and if they are the same as the outer?
@MajorWeakness2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I ve never done inner seals
@OvertravelX Жыл бұрын
Been a while since you've asked, but there isn't an inner seal on the rear. The gear oil runs all the way out to the end of the axle tubes to lubricate the bearing he just replaced. Hence the outer seal.

At a dealership near me is a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with only 44,000 miles and the dealer says its on a lift and they have to replace rear end bearing because they heard howling while driving it. How could bearing go bad at 44,000 miles? Does this sound right? Other than that the Jeep is insanely nice.$11,500 for it.
@MajorWeakness5 ай бұрын
Could be age if the jeep sat in one spot for a long time or if it was pulled behind an RV where it has a lot of miles on the axle bit not registered on the computer

Regarding bearing prices, in Rockauto, the price range is from 5(Schaeffler/ FAG) -38(Mopar) usd each...still well known brands, any particular to avoid? Or to recommend?
@MajorWeakness Жыл бұрын
I have experience with National, Moog, brand. I can't vouch for others. You can't go wrong with the oem mopar if u are doing stock. Try Morrisb4x4 for other brands.

I have a hum in my left front suspension. Replaced wheel bearing, U-joint and a partially seized caliper. Invested in a Steelman wireless chassisEar and determined I need an AXLE bearing. Have you replaced a front AXLE bearing on your Cherokee? If so, is the procedure, tools close to being the same? Thx
@MajorWeakness2 жыл бұрын
www.quadratec.com/jeep-replacement-parts/cherokee-xj/xj-dana-30-front.php See diagram from link. It could be #10 or #2 making the noise. You might want to move the listener near #2 to see of louder. Somewhat a different procedure. I haven't changed on mine as of yet.

How do you know if the bearings are bad?
@MajorWeakness2 жыл бұрын
Normally you would hear a humming or grinding noise. Also if you hold the tire try to move and test for play that is another way.

worried about starting the bearing dry but stick your dirty fingers all in it and set the bearing in your dirty pants. dirt will kill a bearing extremely quickly.
