I can totally relate as my dad has been an alcoholic all his life, he was never really available and when he was you didn't want him. I also have an elder sister and we both formed a sort of union with mom being each other's strength. Dad did love and care about us (not mom) when he was sober(rare). He did financially support our education so I'm grateful but he always felt like a sponsor who was there for 5 hours in 15 years when you really needed him. Now I'm 20, an international student in Canada away from my family having left the toxic environment. Its been an year and a half here, not much changed back home. I'm in a business program inspired by influences such as Dana but I realized music is my true passion and hope to make my dreams a reality.

He grew up in southie which is a rough and tumble Irish hood run by the winter hill gang. Whitey Bulger ran southie from 1978 to 1995 so Dana Whites entire youth. In 1975 the city of Boston tried to integrate southie which led to riots in the street. Southie borders Dorchester, another predominantly white Irish hood. Anyway, Dana was running a boxing gym in Boston and Kevin Wise, the number 2 man under whitey and known hitman comes into dana's gym demanding protection money. 2 weeks later Dana left Boston for Vegas. Rurmor has it he never wants to have a major UfC event in Boston because of unpaid money he owes the winter hill gang.

Power corrupts. To be the kind of promoter he is it would mean making a massive compromise as a "decent person". He's always selling, he's always front of the media, his focus is growth, profit, publicity and consolidation. Being a decent person in this situation isn't impossible but to be completely single minded and obsessed with building a brand takes absolute commitment to the point where his aggressive streak is just plain ruthless. The way I look at it is he's a sales person first and foremost, he's fucking good at it. Also, spokes people use generic speak to create a desired opinion leaving a disingenuous taste in the customers mouth, it's insulting being told what to think in this context. Dana uses his aggressive and loud method that makes you think "anything can happen". This approach in itself is a unique piece of marketing in a sea of products and brands vying for attention. He sort of beats his chest at how good his product is and says take it or leave it, this appeals to me as it feels like he's offering a choice.

In the mid-nineties when my brothers and I were around 8, 9 and 10 years old, we would go to the cinema on the bus, without our parents. Before going in, we first made the walk over to the Kwik Save to buy a can of No Frills coke and a bag of No Frills crisp. We would then have to sneak it in under our coats. Often we wouldn’t even have the money for the cinema, so would sneak in through the back door. The thought of going up to the counter where they sold popcorn, tortilla crisps with cheese dips or the various drinks offerings was a dream to us that was completely out of reach.

Actually, he's not very good at being a conventional interviewer. They should pose questions that make the respondent and the audience think, they should ask questions that make them feel uncomfortable, they should ask questions that make them reveal something they haven't revealed before. He does none of this, he actually lets his guests be themselves and tell their story the way they want to tell it instead of pushing his own agenda. That's what I like about Graham.

Johana Masin where is your compassion? This man clearly went through the most abusive childhood imaginable. He spoke of another abusive time where his father first ate dinner before fixing a flat tire on Dana's bicycle. It wasn't any easier for his sister. The two would sometimes have to pick up odd jobs or do extra chores around the house if they wanted extra money to do things with their friends on weekends and stuff. I don't know how social services were never called.

We all grow up differently. I've had to learn this. Ones rough, is another mans dream. I feel like I was brought up rough but a lot of people did. Just because someone hands you money for popcorn doesn't mean it's not tough to get through. Especially when you're around other families that are kind of normal. I respect Dana as a man but some of his business decisions are kind of silly. He's still a great promoter at the end of the day.

Dana was born in 1969, Beverly Hills Cop came out in 1984...so I'm gonna say he wasn't 9 when this story took place...

I remember begging my dad to coach farm league and what a mistake that was. He came with a cooler full of beer, smoking cigarettes and rarely showed up. I grew up rough but don’t think that’s a bad thing

Look where they are now though. I mean, I'm glad there are people that will settle for working 9 to 5 doing something they don't like for the greatest portion of their life, but that's now how I wish to live. And it's not how Joe amd Dana wanted to live.

It is fascinating actually isn't it? My dad was around, payed close attention, was strict but protective, we didn't have much money but he provided what we needed.... had a temper and explosive with discipline but thought he was doing the right thing (what he learned in the military) and didn't come home drunk. BUT.... that is the major factor, without a doubt, that kept me from chasing my dreams or just doing what I wanted with the gumption, audacity and foresight Dana, Joe, and other people like them have. I was so worried about doing the "right thing", that things just don't work out for people like me, or that I had to keep working hard, miserable jobs to be acceptable and that chasing the easier money or dream jobs would definitely end in huge failure. I'm not controversial like Dana, but I'm miserable. Some of that can be in my nature, but a lot is from my "normal", respectable upbringing. And I'm not an idiot, or without talent... (had an I.Q. of 137, had a good ear for music, excelled in sports if I applied myself)... but doubted myself to a struggling life.

you have to learn on stuff on your own right but if your mam working long hours to put you were where you were then don't be complaining that your mam wasn't around like it was a bad thing you got there because of that, all you had to do is go visit her and stuff. Not hard.
