Love the change in dialogue and removing the "or maybe you hated her" line. There's still an implication that maybe James' didn't love her in his silence at the question and the way he looks awkward. The original was a bit more blunt with the way it delivered the story, the remake is a bit more sutble, which I like and makes the twists in the plot a little more interesting.

I prefer the change. The implication that James hated Mary is still there, it's just more subtle. Accusing a complete stranger of hating their deceased wife is rude and nosy. In the new line, it's obvious she's still trying to pry and get insight on James' psyche, she's just being more careful about it.

The original line is the first instance of James confronting the thought that he hated his wife as much as he loved her and rejecting it. It's a very important line that gets reincorporated in different ways several times during the final act of the game and subtly lays out the core of the conflict of James's character without giving it all away unless you already know the story.

​@justhubby I think Born from a Wish reveals that Maria isn't merely a product of Jame's psyche. She has some of Mary's memories that James doesn't share. She was created by Silent Hill and has a will of her own independent from both Silent Hill and James. In the end, she ultimately accepts her role as a pawn in James' torment and is willing to gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss her way into James' heart for a chance at salvation. 💖 Also, James being confronted with the idea he hated his wife as much as he loved her is still there. His silence when asked what should be a straight forward question speaks volumes. That's my interpretation at least. The game's is told in a way that allows multiple interpretations to exist. 😂I'd love to here your interpretation.

@@bonniebear5835 Maria is a product of James's psyche in the sense that she is a manifestation of his desires to reunite with Mary, hence the name of the Maria scenario being Born From a Wish. It's questionable whether she exists for anyone besides James given how she's never shown interacting with any of the for sure flesh and blood humans present in the game. She has no real chance at salvation since she's destined to "die" no matter what, the leave ending ends with Maria coughing just as Mary was as she lay dying. In truth her role is to die again and again as James can do nothing but watch, paralleling the last months he spent with Mary as she succumbed to disease while James could do nothing but watch her die. The silence doesn't really convey the same thing given the context I think. He's being put on the spot by a strange woman that looks just like his wife, actively manipulating him into accompanying her by playing the damsel. Inferring that the implication is that he hates her is something that only comes with knowing the rest of the narrative. Given how James is supposed to be in complete denial of how Mary died up until he's forced to confront it when he discovers the tape in the hotel it doesn't make sense that he'd react in such a way. The outright refusal at the mere suggestion of the idea that he hated her in the original ultimately says way more about what James is feeling at the time and more clearly portrays that he did, at some point, love his wife. This version of the scene is imo just really sloppy and has less going on, Maria just doesn't land and her personality switching doesn't come across as wickedly as the OG's does.

I think there are just different interpretations of the same character. The original is off and venomous, and the remake is innocent and seductive. It doesn't make one version bad, just different. There are a lot of small interactions that I really like when you're traveling with Maria in the remake.

I agree with your first statement. But I think the Remake is definitely more effective in portraying this character. The original is more dreamlike in the sense that she appears very humanlike because of the very normal voice acting. But in the remake, she appears more ghostlike which is on point to her character. She’s a mysterious and ghostly being after all. Her voice is monotone, akin to Aerith in the FF7 Advent Children movie. She speaks more subtly and I like how the remake changed their lines. I think the writing in the remake is so good that it made the original feel so outdated like an old campy horror movie. I still think her original voice actress is impressive. It’s just the writing and the voice direction that weren’t doing it for me. The new voice actress is also equally great.

I think the main problem with remake Maria scenes is that the cinematography is way too snappy. Compared to the original where there's a slow "breathing room" between what James said and Maria's respond. Like the "My name is Maria " line. While James was freaking out. It shows Maria acting coy and rolling her eyes before introducing herself. In the remake, it's just abruptly cuts to Maria once James finishes. This problem also extend to the remake "Anyways" scene. I think Maria voice actress isn't bad. I just think how she delivers her lines isn't compatible with the remakes cinematography.

Proof that being more cinematic or "realistic" doesn't mean better. There's just something creepier and more atmospheric about the fog in the original, and the long and overlooking camera angles almost feel like they're being watched. In the new version, the fog just feels like more of a blank background, and the cinematography feels very standard and flat. The camera just focuses on showing you who's talking and that's about it.

Hmmm. The remake gives different vibes when it comes to Maria. In the OG game, she always had that "sexy" tone when you first meet her (which makes you feel that something's off). In here, she's still playful and touchy-feely with James, but she talks normally. It's good that the voice actress seems to feel more organic here, since people said she sounded wooden in the story trailer. I still like this scene though, it's not bad.

De inicio eu achei a Maria 2024 um tanto fria, voz monótona, quase cansada, mas a medida que a gente avança no jogo, observa que ela flerta com o James o tempo todo, sempre com essa voz mansa, olhares sedutores e muito insinuante. The original Maria was as much better, as remake James is better than his original counterpart. She was like a female version of sarcastic Vincent from SH3, alluring and dangerous and fragile at the same time. The reMaria feels like someone who's simply had enough of that s*it already, and is not caring anymore. Sort of like those characters in the dramas who have a terminal condition and are sarcastic and edgy occasionally, but deep inside depressed and anhedonic. Quite... formulaic. The original Maria's more like Batman's joker - you could never tell what she's *really* about and she was, for a presumed human, terrifying at times. Maybe it is just me, but only in certain shots does her head seem larger than normal. The regular in game model looks fine, but it is only in SOME shots it does seem off. It's possible that it was simply left there by mistake when they went back to tweak the expressions (this is confirmed) or this was done as some creative liberty. In photography, sometimes using a wider lens (35mm) for a portrait or close up can work really well in making the eyes larger or emphasizing expression at the expensive of making the body smaller. Here, it doesn't particularly bother me, but could have done without it either way. Might not have ever noticed if it wasn't pointed out to me. I like the original scene more, but haven't completed the game to give a fair judgement for what they might be going for.

It's flirty, manipulative and seductive, and that's the whole point of it. A manifestation of sexual desires from James, not the player. It's not like the changed completely the character to be a totally different person. People wanted the remake fail since Bloober Team was confirmed to be the developers just to be proven right, but sadly for most of those people, not only performed much great than the original in sales, but pleased newcommers and veterans alike except from BT haters and DEI-Woke obsessive people that sees wokiness in everything. Most faithful remake in years, even more so than Resident Evil remakes.

Constructive criticism is healthy, but "this is remade, therefore I'll forcefully find some argument to back my prestablished notion" is not. The scene's reinterpretation is criticed mainly because Bloober is assumed to be responsible. For example, the background song, Heaven's Night, is WILDLY modified (more than the scene itself probably), yet it is respected because Yamaoka himself chose to do so in order to reinvent its artistic intent. Kudos to Bloober, Konami, Ito and Yamaoka, we should all be thankful for the franchise to come back with such quality and reverance, and direct most criticism towards where it should be headed next.

It was everyone's primary fear and they basically took one of the most important emotive characters from the original and gave her the appeal of a soda that had gone flat. That is a genuine criticism of the remake and not forced in the slightest. Her character was pivotal for the exact way she behaved in the original and they neutered that.

Why do we keep needing to make silent hill games and why should we be thankful? There are actually too many unnecessary silent hill games. In my opinion the Yamaoka soundtrack is worse for the remake, I haven’t been into his recent stuff much but I’m particularly displeased at the orchestra additions to some of the tracks. It makes them feel like generic covers of the originals. And there is much to criticize in this remake, mainly the lack of cinematographic competency, the flatness of light and shadows, and the charmless vocal direction.

The original Maria seemed a lot nastier towards James. A part of that is how nasty Mary got towards James as her illness progressed. She's rather vicious and cruel towards James, almost like she's punishing him for what he did to Mary. The Remake Maria is a lot nicer towards James to seduce him and be a sweeter replacement of his wife. She is quick to remind him that Mary is dead and gone and that he should move on.
