Imagine, even after coming back from being brainwashed you CHOOSE to fight for them still. Truly believing in their cause. Then, you get killed by the people you fought alongside with. Necessary betrayal? Hell no. It's the Cold war United States, this was the GOLDEN age of misinformation and clandestine operations. They could've made Bell disappear and live in America happily ever after or even a strong asset through evaluation. Did bell earn their freedom? I think so.

I saw it as soon as he said "your sacrifice will be very well appreciated" along with the sunset. It's the most obvious "thanks, now look at the pretty flowers. Here's my question to you. Would you rather be chained and treated well to willingly accept your own slaughter after you've outlived your usefulness? Or leave people feeling uneasy, be free and be willing to defend yourself? People have turned coat, it's a lot more common with oppressive ideals. There's a reason Belle was swept under the rug. People like me would be furious and call Adler a murderer. No, there were multiple possible endings to the Cold War. The true ending is when Bell is shot by Adler, and Adler's team successfully saves the world from Perseus' manipulation of Operation Greenlight.
