Thinking of just grabbing a 7800 XT. The price difference is bigger where I live, and the AMD card seems to have a better longevity due to more vram, wider memory bandwidth and so on. I don't care for frame gen, I don't want to introduce any latency, not even singleplayer games.

The extra latency introduced is pretty small above a certain framerate, like a couple milliseconds. Usually if I can hit around 75 fps base, the frame gen feels virtually identical. Really isn't a tangible difference between 38 ms and 33, for example. Doesn't feel like a native 120 obviously, but if you're not getting that anyway you're not missing out. Wouldn't use it in multiplayer, obviously, but for shit like Cyberpunk it's nice.

Software RT is pretty cheap. This is a new standard now. Just like existing shadows became a standard in 90s or TAA became a must in 10s. Software RT truly makes modern games look much more realistic due to more grounded objects, less light leaks, more precise shadows, more detailed and stable reflections etc. Hardware RT, on the other hand, is significantly more demanding, but there is always a separate slider for enabling this feature.
@Torso6131
@Torso6131 10 ай бұрын
@@Jasontvnd9 Avatar uses hardware accelerated RT if the card can support it, and doesn't if it doesn't if a card is missing hardware accelerated RT support. Which is honestly great. If your card supports it, you get more accurate RT, and if not then you can actually run it.
@Skeames1214
@Skeames1214 10 ай бұрын
It almost certainly will, the optimization is just getting better on that front. Games like Avatar and the UE5 games shown in this demo have RT. You could make a distinction between Lumen and RT in other engines, but at the end of the day they're both tracing rays, and they both incur a performance hit for better GI. What I think is interesting is that the performance hit you take with enabling RT in some games is so much less than it is in others. In UE5 games, Avatar, Metro Exodus, etc. AMD competes pretty well. You can turn Lumen/RTGI on and you'll do just fine, hardware accellerated Lumen usually gives the Nvidia cards about a small but noticeable advantage (5-15 percent range in some of Daniels testing, I think it was larger for Matrix Awakens if I recall correctly). In other games, though, the gap is massive. Cyberpunk on Ultra RT (not even path tracing!) is damn near unplayable even on high end AMD equipment unless you're willing to go for a really low internal resolution. It's just kinda weird. Forza with RT maxed out isn't unplayable on high end AMD hardware by any means, but the performance hit you take enabling it on an AMD GPU is giant. Takes the 7900xtx down to the 4070ish range of performance. And it's not even a very comprehensive implementation, it's just AO and near-field car reflections. Avatar's is much more ambitious, and yet AMD GPU's are fairly close to their Nvidia counterparts.

On one hand, I'm blown away by the 7800xt doing so well, even with RT, on the other, I'm also blown away that a 4070 uses about the same amount of electricity as my 6700xt does when it's undervolted. Not that I'm in the market for a GPU upgrade just yet, but it's still fascinating to see.

Just so you know. My 7800xt can undervolt and maintain the same or +2-3% performance, while running 80w on avg lower putting it at 180-210w under load. Dead silent, Sapphire Pure 7800xt. The overclocking is easy mode, just tweak each game and add a profile in the AMD Drivers. 2650-2800mhz depending on game, should be achievable while staying inside the power limit of 280-90w

@@xxtheplague1xx280 Wow that's a MASSIVE power savings. I wonder if AMD is just super conservative with how much juice they give their cards to ensure stable clocks out of the box. You're getting basically the same power consumption as my 6700xt undervolted!
@JanM2
@JanM2 10 ай бұрын
@@Torso6131Thats usually the case with GPUs nowadays. The Rx 6700 xt on the other hand can be undervolted to consume only ~130W of power under full load. They probably do this to not only ensure stable performance, but also to crank out every single bit of performance they can get out of their GPUs to have a comparative advantage. Similar to how the 7000 series CPUs also overheat way too much compared to how cool they can be with PBO tuning

@@JanM2 Gotcha. Yeah, I just got my 6700xt about a year ago, and before that i had a GTX 670 which certainly did not follow that line of thinking ha. It makes sense. Based on what i could visually tell through your video, without focusing even much on the FPS numbers, the 4070 simply stutters more and for longer. Both cards had their stuttery moments, but the 4070 was just worse. Both cards are having to deal with the poor optimization in Lords of the fallen, but the 7800XT handled it better, even though it certainly had stutters as well. The results across the video also prove it further, 1% lows can be really staggering on the 4070 relative to the average, such as in Immortals of Aveum and Robocop. Both the average FPS and 1% lows on the 7800XT are just better overall looking at these results across multiple titles. I have a 6900XT so i'm very happy with my card already, but if i was choosing between these two cards, the 7800XT would absolutely be what i go with just based on the way the stuttering affects both cards and plus the better performance. Obvious Stutters are more immersion breaking than anything else, and to be fair, poor game optimization is the biggest culprit here.

I don't know if you would consider it as fair comparison, but 4070 is basically un-overclockable(yes, a made up word), while people easily get 15% more performance from the 7800xt, especially from the better cards, like the one you have there. Don't get me wrong, OC has its own issues, like supporting an even larger gap in power draw. How much value do you think it adds to the card, it basically puts it closer to 4070ti in non rt performance, more VRAM than it, while being cheaper than a 4070.

In my country (Poland) the cheapest RX 7800 XT costs 602$ and RTX 4070 costs 662$. As for the highest price RX 7800 XT is 688$ and RTX 4070 is 907$ (ASUS ROG STRIX OC model). This is a bizarre difference. As I'm not a big fan of games, which tend to have RT, Nvidia is a pretty bad choice. This is the same with RTX 4080 and RX 7900 XTX. The cheapest options accordingly are 1335$ and 1076$. I'm sorry, but I don't think DLSS is that much better to pay so much more money. This is simply outrageous on top of stupidly high prices to begin with. Many of those cards costs more than average person makes a month and this is just one component. To buy only RTX 4080 and i9-14900K (696$) you need to spend 2031$. To buy red parts - R7 7800X3D (430$) and RX 7900 XTX total cost is 1506$. Add MOBO, RAM, power supply, SSDs and you need to spend at least 500$ more. I know you can buy cheaper parts, but still rig with RX 7800 XT or RTX 4070 would hit about 1300-1500$. This is absurd and in EU we get to pay additional tax for electronics, which makes it worse. I'm preparing myself to buy high spec rig to have it for 5-8 years, but still there are no compelling options. I'm waiting for about 5-6 years as of now. I was ready to buy RTX 30 series, but crypto boom made me patient as a monk. Why do I wait? Cause Radeons are not good enough with power consumption for me. Geforces are much better, but their cutting on specs and rising prices as I stated on the begining aren't compelling for me. I hope new generation would make this situation a little better (hopium/copium). So after my 'short' rant, I can say those both cards aren't equal in my eyes. Radeon still is better strictly because of price. Many price trends didn't get into EU, so better raster performance for cheaper is better in my opinion. RT for me isn't a feature, which is a main target and I still think it is just good to have, but not a must. The worst thing about it is performance tax. Maybe next generation would make it more tolerable. I'm interested in prices in other EU countries, if someone is willing to share under my comment I would be grateful. Cause I think prices have got worse, cause of weaker $ exchange rate - prices in PLN stayed the same, but rate has got lower.

This is exactly the same with salary. 50 people have minimum wage and one person earns 20k $ and on average you have about 1254,9$. If you want to be more acurate about common salary you need to find median earnings. Currently in Poland this should be about 1063,83$ netto. This is much better, but still on mid lower end of earnings in EU. Some countries have two times higher. I can agree with you on that, normal person won't buy RX 7900 XTX, RTX 4080 or higher. This is just absurd of a price. But 80 class cards should cost at most 800$. Not that long ago RTX 3080 (september 2020) MSRP was 699$, RX 6800 XT 649$. RX 7800 XT is 499$, but this is just real RX 7700 XT in disguise. Now let us look at green team: - RTX 4070 [MSRP 599$] - really RTX 4060 class - RTX 4070 Ti [MSRP 799$] - really RTX 4060 Ti. With those prices normal people are lock out of parts or need to compromise with older generations or even go to used market. With more and more demanding titles coming up, you would need to upgrade faster than more people are willing to. But if you don't understand or you don't want to understand I won't pick this topic again. As for me I won't compromise on worse parts, but I won't pay stupid prices like some kind of collectionner. Prices for nvidia are bad bang-for-buck thats why i dont buy them. I change gpu's every 8month-1 year. Sell old one add some PLN and buy new one. Litteraly sold my 5600xt bought 6700xt for same price. Then sold my 6700xt bought 6950xt + 400zł then sold that 6950xt bought 7800xt same price... I have my own 1 person company that i made myself w/o anyones help and i buy GPU'S at NET price. Thats why i joked u should change you'r job. I increased my prices 2X in 2023 compared to 2021. Went from 50zł/h to 120-150zł/h depending on client and i only fix Gas pipes and Gas boilers. Numbers of clients did not even decreese... I will prolly swap that 7800xt to rtx4070super or 4070ti super. But max im willing to pay is 3500zł gross on 4070ti super. I spend more on my dogs per YEAR then i do on my PC. 5800x3d+7800xt.

Given there is a £180 difference, or around 30%, difference in price here in the UK, then in order for the Nvidia to make sense, it should be 31% faster or MORE. It's not. It's actually SLOWER. I don't know where you live but, I know that in Europe even AFTER the huge damage control to pricing that Nvidia did after the 7800XT came out and "destroyed" the 4060Ti (at exactly the same price point), the AMD card is still hugely ahead and a far better product. I had (underline had) upgraded from a 2070 Super to the ASUS RX 7800XT (gunmetal version). I purchased it Nov 6th in anticipation of having it for my recovery from a surgery that was scheduled on the 13th. So I only really got to benchmarking it that first week. I had my surgery on the 13th, and didn't get home until the 21st. I didn't really feel up to doing much until the 24th. One the evening of the 24th, I really got into some Sniper Elite 5 in which I had the settings maxed out at 1440p and it was running a buttery smooth 144 FPS (max refresh of my monitor). I benchmarked it some more as well. Overall, I was really impressed with the card and definitely satisfied with my purchase. THAT WAS UNTIL.... the next day (Saturday morning). I was sitting with my feet up DOOM scrolling on my phone next to my computer. The computer was on and running World Community Grid and nothing else, so CPU (5900X) running 100%, I can't say for sure if there were any GPU work units coming through at the time though. AND... it just shut off. Almost like a reboot from a Windows Update. The RGB was still sort of running, but the computer was off. I really thought an update had caused it to restart, so I watched it for like 30 seconds, but it didn't restart. I hit the power button, nothing. Hit it a couple more times with various lengths of holding it down and nothing. So I reached in behind and turned the PSU off and let the power discharge from my computer (ie the ARGB shut off). I gave it a few seconds, turned the PSU back on and hit the power switch and PPPFFFFFTTTT. The magic smoke poured out around the area of the VBIOS switch. I'm a EET, so I'm no stranger to the smell of burnt electronics. Needless to say that was very distressing and disappointing. I was going to throw my 2070 Super back in, then thought again, worried that if it was PSU that had blown it up that I might destroy a good working card. I had a 980GTX sitting on my desk, so I popped that in. After a couple boot attempts (BIOS figuring out the VGA adapter had changed), I was into Windows. The place I purchased it from (Memory Express) offers a IPR (Instant Product Replacement) for all the stuff they sell, I had purchased this (I don't normally go for extended warranties) so I took it in. Because they no longer had my card, or for that matter any 7800XT card in stock, and I didn't want anything else, they refunded me my purchase and the cost of the IPR. I have been less than patiently waiting for them to get any model of the 7800XT in stock, to no avail. I only have less than three weeks left of my STD (no not that STD, Short Term Disability) left, so it's doubtful that I'll have a card before I go back to work. At that point my interest in an upgrade will be muted, and the rumored Super series from nVidia will be coming soon after. I would prefer a nVidia card if not for their pricing and VRAM shenanigans, so if the Super series corrects that (yeah right), then at that point I might reconsider my purchase decision.

did u ever figure out why the card burnt? sounds quite intriguing. could be u just got an unlucky defect or there was something with the VBIOS settings that set the voltage too high, thus crisped it? (am definitely not an expert or knowledgeable enough on the subject tho)
@scottcoburn7528
@scottcoburn7528 10 ай бұрын
@@kagetora03 No I didn't look into it further as it was under warranty with MemEx's IPR, and I didn't want to give them any reason not to honor it. I was actually thinking it was a tantalum capacitor placed backward (reverse polarity). ASUS had an unfortunate series of motherboards (one of their more expensive lines) that had a cap placed reverse polarity. Buildzoid discovered it through a users photo of the damage. These types of manufacturing defects are uncommon, but not impossible. In cases like that, the cap won't necessarily burn immediately. It depends on the voltage rating vs. the voltage on the cap, the operating temperature, and the on time. The closer the operating voltage and the maximum rated voltage are, the quicker it will fail. Typically engineers design in at least a X2 tolerance. So if the expected voltage on the cap is say 3V, the cap will be rated for at least 6V, or even 10V. You never design with components that are being taken to their maximum rating at it's normal operation. Temperature is a factor too. Typically you half the max voltage rating at high temperatures. However in this sort of use (not operating in high ambient termperatures), I wouldn't expect a capacitor to be exposed to much heat. They don't produce much heat of their own. Of course without having taken it apart, this is only conjecture. MemEx took my contact information because they thought ASUS might want further information as this is technically a safety issue (burning electronics), though I only seen smoke, no flame. I was actually kind of hoping they'd contact me, so I could find out what failed, as I'm a EET so it's in my wheelhouse. They haven't contacted me yet, and it's been 17 days since I returned it to MemEx.

Great video and very informative 🤩🤯👍! Very interesting that Nvidia has been pushing Ray Tracing for years now and we’re seeing the new “mainstream” engine, Unreal Engine 5, not really using hardware Ray Tracing, only Lumen (more software based) which benefits AMD (from this video) and not Nvidias more advanced architecture 😱🤯🤔. Maybe we’ll see AMDs favour by more people (Nvidia dominates Steam Surveys) going forward in the future …… interesting times indeed. I’m an Nvidia user and loving seeing more GPU competition in the benchmark results. AMD may force Nvidia to offer a bit more in their GPU performance and not to skimp with a 192-bit bus on its medium and higher end GPU lineup with its 4070 / 4070Ti. Great work Daniel 💪🥰

So you now have the ability to incorporate frame generation into any FSR title (and possibly other titles) through mod support, as well as enable FSR from DLSS only support. @danielowen - With regards to Ray Tracing, it was my understanding that some of the UE5 games have some form of RT baked right into it, and that is why there is NO options to turn it on/off. There was also talk about how some games were using much higher than normal settings, even at the lowest end and that is why they are much more demanding, requiring betting gpu's to get out of the gate. Much like Alan Wake 2 made older GPU's obsolete and unusable due to graphic requirements in game design.

Right now it is possible and totally free to install text-to-image AI software, SDXL, locally on your computer and run it through your GPU. However, it only works on nvidia GPUs or really slowly through your CPU. Wasn't aware of it when I bought my 4070 but I started dabbling into it and I'm glad I picked nvidia.

I would rather hear your perspective on games optimizations, insider stories or interviews with game devs, otherwise you're joining hundreds of other faceless "comparison videos" which doesn't give any food for thought. So basically it's confirmed that PS5 Pro is getting a refresh in a few months during 2024, the spec has been leaked to be a GPU based on AMD RDNA 3 with 72 CU, etc... Another confirmation is that Microsoft is not doing a refresh rather they are pushing for a next-gen Xbox during 2026 with a GPU based on AMD RDNA 5, we don't have more leak info then that. Consider also that UE5-engine seems to favor AMD, I can see AMD just getting stronger and stronger throughout time. Taking Daniels review here into consideration and my own little digging, I would definitely pickup the 7800 XT, not only is it stronger right now than the RTX 4070, but it will also age good and gain decent performance over-time. Your next gpu will most likely be under the next-gen era which according to Microsoft will hit 2026 with RDNA5.
