Thanks Dan. I have the 23, 35 and 50mm f2 lenses and I tend to leave the 50mm for portraits. Your video convinced me there’s a lot more to gain out of that lens and I need to open myself up to the focal length for landscape and street more. Great video and, as always, great perspective. Hi Dan, love your channel. I’ve just made what I consider to be a momentous decision. I’ve sold my XF 56mm f1.2 and am looking for the 50 f2. I’ve had this lens before and hoped that by changing to the 56, I would gain a tremendous amount in image quality. True the 56 has amazing separation of subject but I’ve looked back at shots taken with my old 50 f2 and found they really stand up. Plus it’s much smaller, faster focusing and it’s weather sealed. Living in West Yorkshire (UK), we get a fair bit of rain, fog, more rain and mist. Paired with either my excellent XT2 or XH1, the 50 f2 is a great choice.

I've had this lens for about a month and I think it has overtaken my 55-200 as my favourite - for the time being! After a week I wasn't convinced and actually had it packed ready for a return but something made me have another go with it and I have not been disappointed - I can't believe I was going to return it. It lives on my X-T3 and is great for just about anything although I mostly use it for photos of my little girl. Another great video Dan!

It won't really do macro, but the close focus combined with the slightly extended focal length makes it a really wonderful choice for a wide range of scenes and allowing you to capture details and intimate views.

@@DanBaileyPhoto Long answer: Being a historian as an occupation, I do a ton of photographing artifacts (pretty much portrait work) for preservation and catalog. While normally, I would have preferred a larger aperture (like my canon 50mm f1.2), the fact that the objects are stationary, I can use these lenses and just prime the shutter at 1/10 or lower on a tri. For photographing objects, 2.8-4 has been my go to aperture, 2 bleaches out detail. Not at work? The local skate park. Also the Indie music scene in Indy. A lot of artists could use the imagery for marketing and I could use getting my name out there, so it's been a good marriage. A lot of these breweries, gastropubs want the imagery, so I normally get free drinks and food, for the photos. I normally shoot with Canon 5D MKIV because I like how it pairs with L lenses. However, I was in a studio during a recording and though "oh s---, I hope this doesn't pick up." So THAT is the moment I went with mirrorless for those tight situations, and it hasn't let me down.

I’m using the X-T2 to document my life, both indoors and through travel, hiking, family vacations, etc. I’m missing that short telephoto focal length for portraits, so this seems a good fit.

5:48 "I haven't seen any limitations to the autofocus on this lens." This is more of something I've seen with the camera, but it's about how the camera and body work. I learned this early on how different the spot and the zone selections were. I recommend spot because on the xt20, the zone does some weird things. When I do zone, it highlights like it brackets, sometimes dark, sometimes not. And the focus motor is so precise it'll lock on without hesitation to what is highlighted and you find yourself saying "man, I didn't want that!!!" I've dealt mostly with the focus on 5dmarkIV and it was like going from a toyota camry to a maserati.

Andy, you are correct. Both the camera and the lens play important roles as they work together in the whole autofocus equation. And yes, it's all about establishing an AF workflow that matches your style, your equipment and the types of subjects you like to shoot. It takes a lot of practice to figure out what works well on each different camera system, but that's all part of the process of learning and experience. When looking at photos on the Internet I think the output from this lens and the 90mm are my favourite. I use the 80mm more than any other for close up nature photography, it's great at this job but also heavy and very slow focusing in low light.

The XF50mm f/2 was the second lens I bought after my X-T1. The first was the XF35mm f/2 that I bought with the X-T1. As you've said both are very small, light, sharp lenses.

Indeed! The 35 and 50 make s great combination! Add in a wide angle, like the 16 2.8 or the 23 f/2, and you’ve got an incredibly compact kit that covers your three focal length ranges of wide, middle, long. What do you like to shoot with your X-T1?

When I switched to FujiFilm mirrorless system, I want to come as close as possible to replicating my old silver full frame Pentax FA Limited 3 amigos (31mm f/1.8, 43mm f/1.9, and 77mm f/1.8). The Fujinon lenses have the bonus of auto-focusing quicker and being weather resistant.

I have the 18 f2, 35 f2, xf 18-55 and xc15-45 (which I mainly use as a 15mm prime). I'm looking to buy the 50 f2, as I had the 56 f1.2 and sold it due to its size and weight. I mainly use the camera on vacation and hikes, but I'm gradually starting to get more into photography. I really enjoy your videos, they are quite informative. I had a couple of Tokina lenses back in my film days, and I really liked them. I haven't tried any of their Fuji-mount lenses, but I'm sure the ATX 56mm is a good choice. I can attest that the Fuji 50mm f/2 is an amazingly fun little lens, though. Looking at the specs, it has a closer minimum focusing distance that the Tokina, and it's lighter and smaller as well, and weather sealed. However, the Tokina has a faster f/1.4 aperture. That could come in handy for certain scenes. Touch choice. In my mind, it would come down to priority of size and weather sailing, (Fuji) or faster aperture (Tokina.) Good luck!

Hello, thank you for your comment. The 50mm does a very nice job as a short telephoto portrait lens, so if you wanted to avoid some redundancy, then perhaps you should consider a wide angle, such as those two you mentioned, the 23 f/2 and 16 f/2.8. Both are great lenses. An 85 or 90 would also be a good choice, but again, that would mean you have two short telephoto lenses. Having a wider alternative to the 50 would offer some different creative variation.

Anything specific you to take pictures at those low low temperature without worrying about your gear?

David, for the most part, modern cameras and lenses will function fine at very low temperatures. I've shot with my X Series cameras down to -20 F. The focus motors can get a little sluggish, but only real problems are battery life and condensation. Having extra batteries will solve the first issue. Condensation is the bigger issue, though. If you take the camera from cold to warm (inside) without letting it gradually warm up, you'll get condensation, and if you take it back into the cold again before it has fully dried out, that moisture will freeze. If you're going from cold to warm, you need to keep your camera gear inside the bag when you go inside, especially if you plan to go back outside again soon. The cold air inside your bag will keep it from condensing, and if you're inside for a long time, it will warm up gradually inside the bag. Hope that helps. That's a pretty good kit, and given those two lenses, I think the 50 would fit nicely right in the middle. As I mentioned in this video, it's one of my favorite lenses, because it's tiny, very sharp, weather sealed, has extremely close focus, and it's one of of the least expensive X Series lenses. Overall, I find it great for portraits and for isolating and accentuating parts of the scene, especially subjects that are fairly close, because you can place them against a soft background and still suggest the rest of the scene. I would concur. The 50mm is such a sweet lens. I just did a 2-day mountain bike cabin trip and along with the X100V, I only took only the 50mm f/2 on my X-T4.

Hi Dan, great review. I don’t own the 50 f2 but now I think I’m consider purchasing it. I own both the 90mm and the 80. I find the 90 the fastest focussing lens and very sharp. But I find the 80 the sharpest, so sharp that I choose not to use it for the bride’s portraits. What do you think of the 80? Take care Dan. Your videos are always a pleasure to watch.

It’s an excellent lens, but definitely a bit bigger and heavier, and I try to stick with the smaller, lighter glass. However, it does have OIS and macro capabilities. In terms of quality, both the 80 and 90 are incredible lenses, but they each have their strengths.

That said, the 80 can certainly come in handy for shooting closeups, and it's got stabilization, so that's nice. For me, though, I'm a huge fan of the 90, I just love the size, view angle and form factor of that lens.

The 50/2 is on my to purchase list. Whilst everyone raves, and doubtless will continue to, about the 56 1.2, I doubt that my photography skills could extract the full amount of its potential. Similar to the 16 1.4 and 16 2.8, though 16 mm is not a focal length I would use. And, the 56 1.2 is too expensive, at least for me. Be interesting if Fuji, which it apparently refuses to do, would give some assistance to Sigma. When you look at what Sigma has done for the Sony APS-C and other brands of apsc and now, MFT, lens, seeing how the Sigma 56 1.4, which is very reasonably priced would perform on X series bodies, would be interesting. Used a Sigma 56 1.4 on a friend's Sony a6400, talk about sensational focusing ability, and was blown away with the mega fast and locked on IAF ability. As usual, a practical and sensible review from Dan.

Robert, I’m of the same mindset. I actually have the 56 1.2, and while it’s an incredible lens, I found myself not using it very often, mainly due to its added size and weight. In addition, it has slower AF, and it’s not WR. By contrast, I’m using the 50 f2 all the time. I’m just a huge fan of smaller lenses. For that reason, I don’t have the 16 1.4, but I do like the 16 2.8, and the 14 2.8, even though that lens isn’t weather sealed. Regarding Fuji and Sigma, I don’t have any official info as to why they haven’t collaborated, but I suspect it’s because Fuji is a legacy glass manufacturer, and they want to keep as much of that business close to home. Companies like Fuji make more money from lenses than cameras, and with their own success with lenses, and with the incredibly high competition in the photo industry, they probably see no reason to open that up to other companies right now. Maybe things will change as they continue to grow... who knows.

I'm getting a new fuji camera and I have two options: 1) getting it with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 or 2) getting it with this lens, 50mm f2 AND the "pancake" 27mm f/2.8. Juan, Hmmm.... that's a tough choose. I love both the 50 and the 27, they're excellent quality, high performing lenses. The 18-55 is also a very versatile lens, but given the high performance of the 50, and the incredibly tiny size of the 27, that could be a pretty cool combination.

Thanks, Paul. The cycling photos in this video that were shot in broad daylight were pretty fast, around 1/2000 sec and higher. The sunset and glacier biking images were slower, around 1/200. to 1/400 sec.

How bout the 18mm f2? You didn't mention it when you said you can't go wrong with any of the fujicrons(16,23,35,50,90). Is it a bad lens? I want to know your thoughts on the 18mm f2.

No, the 18mm f/2 is not a bad lens. It’s one of the original lenses for the X Series. I’ve used it quite a bit in all seasons, and I like it because it’s extremely small and light, and it makes great looking images. That said, it’s not quite in the same class as the lenses you mentioned, which are all weather sealed and use faster, quieter AF motors. So, overall, the 18 is very good lens that has a lot of style, but I’d love to see Fuji update this one to match the specs of their newer weather sealed primes.

Thanks for the video at the right moment. I recently sold my 56mm 1.2 and picked up the 50mm f2 for exactly half the selling price of the 56. I wasn't sure if I made the right choice, but the 56 was heavy enough to make me not pick it up when i go for a photo walk. P:S :- The transitions between cuts in the video were very distracting. I'd have preferred if you replaced the cuts with either sample images or images of the lens itself.

Toni, they're both very good, but with extreme pixel peeping, the 56 will produce slightly sharper images across most of the aperture range. However, consider that it's a much more expensive lens. In real life use, though, the differences are pretty negligible, and when you analyze overall performance and cost, the 50 is a hard one to beat.

Oh. I’m an amateur Dan Bailey. I mostly shoot with my X-H1 but I also have a X-T20. I also carry XF 23 f2, 35 f2, 50 f2 and a 90 f2. I’m extremely satisfied with this combo and not afraid to go high with my ISO-setting. The IBIS in my X-H1 helps me keep the ISO a little lower when the lighting is compromised. I would really liked to get better with my street photography and I’m hoping you will teach us something in that category soon. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 👍🏼

Daniel, that sounds like an amazing lens kit you have, and I love that they’re all primes. 👍 I don’t do much street photography per se, but my outdoor style does have a similar approach of going fast and light, and being able to see and compose quickly. Even though they’re not “street” related, you should watch my other videos to pick out techniques and ideas you can apply to your street shooting. That’s a tough one. If you prefer a slightly tighter, more narrow, focused look, with your photos, then go for the 50. If you want to show a little more environment with close to mid distance subjects, and creative a look that similar to the way your eye sees, then I’d go for the 35.

However the weight of the 50mm is a big factor and the differences between the 2 lenses is negligible from what i have been seen though not in person. I won't be able to step down to 1.2 on the 56 but not the end of the world. I use the xt3 with the kit lens

@@DanBaileyPhoto About the mic, I guess something you can do in post is use the good mono track than use the whole stereo, then adjust the volume to your taste, it will help a lot even you don't change the mic. my favorite lens is 50mm equal in full frame. It work great if I only have one single lens for photo even though somewhat limit, but as now I become a video guy, then I am really thinking the combo of 35 and 85(or 100 macro), in order to have different shot, but I am still struggle a little bit now. I hope there is a XH2 can do unlimit recording, as for now, sony A7S3 really caught my attention and I am using BMPCC4K. Thanks for you reply and keep safe!

Regarding the audio, I'm experimenting with adjusting the panning of the signal, and I'll also be contacting tech support on Monday to see if the issue is inside the camera and if it can be fixed. In the meantime, I am mixing everything with headphones so that I can more accurately and clearly fix the audio in my videos until I get this fixed. Since Fuji rolled IBIS and high end video into the X-T4, I don't know if there will be and X-H2. However, all that stuff keep improving with each new generation of camera, which only works to our benefit. And yes, having a couple of different lenses, or experiment with different shooting distances and vantage points can really make a difference. I've shot a few videos with one lens, but worked hard to vary my vantage points, and it definitely adds a lot of variation.

My favorite Fuji wide angle is the 14 f/2.8. This was one of my very first X Series lenses, and it's seen a lot of use over the years. Extremely sharp with almost no distortion and nice, close focus capabilities. I've used the 16 f/2.8 as well, it's is a bit more compact and weather sealed. To be honest and real the 56 f1.2 is a league above 50f2 when it come to IQ. They are two different lenses for different purposes ,but when it come to portrait 56 is the way to go.

I would agree with you, they are two very different lenses. For a dedicated portrait shooter, the 56 would be the go-to choice, but for all around use, the 50 f/2 is tough to beat for quality, versatility, size, weigh and price.

For event work like photographing flame lit moments I'm really envious of those who shoot with Sony because that's where the ISO performance is really world class. But Fuji cameras make me want to shoot. For me there's also a difference between some charming grain and the mushy vagueness of ISO 6400 and above. In personal work I wouldn't care that much but in a professional context I get that extra bit of perfectionism 😊 Thanks for the review and contribution to the community!

I can totally understand wanting to achieve the best possible results when shooting professional work, especially when it needs to satisfy someone else who may have different expectations. In our tech driven world, we can’t get away from comparisons and the notion that “image quality” alone, (whatever that means😆) sets the purveying tone. Fortunately, just about every modern sensor is capable of producing great results, even at very high ISO settings. And that keeps improving. The Fujis do an excellent job here, and as you stated, they “make you want to shoot.” In the end, a tool that inspires your creativity is the right tool for just about any job. That’s weird, one other person had the same issue on my last video. I specifically edited this one with headphones to make sure, and I just checked it again with headphones, and it sounds normal. I’m hearing audio on both sides. So, I’m not sure what’s going on. Could there be an issue on your end, or with your connection? Are you listening with headphones?
