I have the 35 f2 and love it. I too started cutting my teeth in the film days with a 50mm f1.4 lens on a 35mm SLR. On a bucket list trip to Alaska last year I used this lens for almost 90% of my shots. When I needed a wider field of view, I shot overlapping frames and stitched them together in Lightroom. It made for awesome panoramic images, perfect for large prints! An amazing little lens at a very affordable price, very sharp too!

Ron, thanks for your comment. That's an interesting technique that you describe, creating a wide angle view from a series of "normal" angle images. I might have to try that out sometime, just to see how it works!

Actually, I found this lens to be perfect for shooting high school volleyball games in poorly lit gyms. This lens has an extremely fast AF and rarely do I miss a shot because of focus. I would put the 50mm f/2.0 in the same category. Because my XT-2 handles the noise level when I have to dial up the iso, the combination of camera and lens is difficult to beat. Great video Dan.

Thanks Gale. I do know that you’re often shooting indoor sports in bad/dim light. Having a fast prime can definitely make things a little easier, and as you said, the 35 has petty fast AF. The 50 would also be a very good choice for this kind of shooting; it will allow you to get even closer vantage points, without sacrificing speed or having to use a much bigger lens.

I can vouch for this lens. It is very versatile and is great for street photography, portraits and even landscapes when capturing a smaller part of the frame. Being very light and small also it is always in my camera bag. Being a Fuji prime, it is very high quality and extremely sharp. Another top video Dan!

I bought this lens mostly because of the weather sealing. It is the only WR lens I have for my Fuji X bodies. Turned out to be a great lens though, no complaints. Plenty sharp and it's built well. Shot in light rain many times and no issues.

That original XF35 1.4 is indeed a great lens. The focus is a little slower on the older Fuji bodies, but the optics are stellar!! What kinds of subjects do you like to shoot with it?

Amazing lens especially for the money ! Been on my Fuji camera for a month and have loved using it . Great to have the weather sealing . Actually bought a square lens hood from Hoage on Amazon with a lens cap that will never pop off , a great addition . Also the size and weight are a real bonus . Hey Dan, as a recent subscriber, chatted already with you on another subject, I have to say your channel is ace. For hobbyist like me it is wonderful, great content, well explained and inspiring! I got a used X-Pro1 recently cause I love the rangfinder style of shooting and have (still) used my X100T all the time for the past 5 years. So I got the 35/1.4 with the XP1 and whilst it is great, it is s bit bulky & slow with the XP1, tried the 23/2 for a day, wow different camera and fits the XP body so nicely. So I just sold the 35/1.4 and I‘m getting the 35/2. WR dosen‘t help much on the XP1 😉 but if I am ever upgrading to an XP2 or 3, it comes in handy. Something I noticed is, paired with the old 16MP sensor the ‚Fujicrons‘ loose a bit of their, for me clinical and digital look, which I like 🥳, so win/win for me. Yeah I like to crank up the ISO especially on b&w images, wonderful organic look especially with the old sensor. Love it. Michel, thanks for your feedback and your insight on this. Sounds like the 35/2 on your XP1 will be an excellent combination, and it should retain its magic if you upgrade to a newer model. I agree, higher ISO images on the Fujis do have a special, organic quality and look to them. I know photographers who refuse to use high ISO settings on their cameras and are totally averse to the idea of introducing any bit of noise in their images. They just don't know what their missing. 😀 Keep up the good work and take care!

Nicely done video Dan. I've been using Fuji since 2013, and at this point the X-T2 with the XF35 f/2 is probably my favorite set up. I'll often head out with it for a walk around some part of town just to look for things to photograph. Even though I generally have the other "Fujicrons" with me, it's the 35 that pretty much stays on the camera the whole time. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother carrying the other lenses.

I purchased the 23 1.4 before Fuji released the range of modern, fast enough range of f2 primes. The 2 lauded X 50 fast lens may be excellent, but are expensive and perhaps a Sigma 56 1.4 wouldn't be too far behind. It needs to be remembered that Fuji had been heavily criticised for the early X bodies being very, very slow to reach focus. The f2 trio, as I see it, are modern, light and above all, fast focussing lens. Prices are reasonable and if you want to remain in the Fuji fold, the 50/2 frankly, for most users is difficult to go past.

I agree, that 23 1.4 is indeed a really special lens. I have that one as well, and while I don't use it nearly as often, when I do, it produces amazing results. So sharp, and so fast. It's actually my dedicated macro lens, too. I use it with the MCEX-11 extension tube and get incredibly close images (.4 inches) with incredible image quality. And yes, the first generation of X Series lenses had much slower AF motors, and while they do operate more quickly with the newer, faster processor bodies, they're still not as fast as the later lenses.

I agree with Dan, once you start using it more, it's like butter. I have a very similar kit, the X-M1 (and started with those same two lenses), then I got an X-T1 and then this 35mm, and it's become my favorite for most shooting. That being said, the XC50-230 is underrated in my opinion: for the image quality and cost I think it's the best bargain in the Fujinon lens lineup! It's actually on my X-T1 right now as I've been trying to catch a hummingbird out of my window... :)

You bent my brain at 10:06 ... I would guess that's a macro extension tube being used for a tilt shift-like effect? Very cool. It was also nice to hear many of my own thoughts about this little gem that others don''t discuss much, like how good it is at landscape. I believe this is because the field of view is a touch wider than a true 50.

Goran, thanks for the comment. That image was made using "Miniature Mode," which is one of the ADV filter settings. The result is very much like a tilt shift effect, and it's pretty fun to use. You can definitely get some really cool effects using that mode. Yes, I love using the 35 for landscapes, it seems to do a wonderful job isolating just enough of the scene to give you a nice abbreviation of whatever you're shooting.

Michael, the tele converts cannot be used with the 35 f/2. They're only compatible with a few of the X Series lenses.

Thank you for this great and thorough review. I just ordered this lens to be my travel / everyday lens. I already have the 23mm F2 but I also like to point the camera at myself and the person I’m with at least once or twice as a selfie / group selfie in my environment. The 23mm worked, but with too much facial distortion. I’m hoping that the 35mm will reduce that a bit with a small handle / extension pole (quick release). Your portrait photos really helped in this regard. They look great. Thanks again!

Hi mate :) by the way, congratulations on your pictures! Your work is both inspiring and amazing! I use the X-H1 and the XT-20 as a "take everywhere pocketable camera" combined with the 18 and /or the 27 mm. That said, I hiked in the French Pyrénées in February, with the H-1 and the 35... And it started to snow and my lens got wet and the moisture got inside and I had to dry my lens for hours, praying that It did not get damaged... I think I'll invest in the F/2 lineup (16/23/35/50)

That's a good thing, because "bad" weather pictures can often be very dramatic! All of the little f/2 WR lenses are awesome. I'm a huge fan of the series.

I live in London so cityscapes are plentiful as well. Got the 35 f2 for a lower profile setup to try a bit of street and more relaxed family/friends portraits/memories but I'm realising it could be very useful for landscapes as well!

Thanks for the reply Dan. Currently I have a Fuji X-S10. My only current lens has been the 16-80mm. I sold off a number of Fuji lens over the past 3 years. The 16-80 zoom is very useful but large and heavy. I should receive the 35 F/2 by next week. I've done very little photography since the pandemic. When I do, I enjoy Portrait, Travel, Landscape and Architectural Photography. I am subscribed to your channel and just turned on All Notifications. I will take this lens over the 1.4 any day for my purposes. I am not a huge bokeh fiend and low light performance can be compensated by reducing the shutter speed. That lens does have great character but for my street purposes, this lens has been a work horse, rain or shine

Thanks for your comment. Yes, there are always ways to get around these kinds of limitations. You can get increased bokeh and shallow DOF by simply moving closer, and a simple ISO or shutter speed adjustment will make up for the slight f/stop difference, with virtually no loss in quality. The f2 version is a great lens indeed! So much fun and definitely a work horse. 💪

I currently have the xf 35 1.4 on my xt1 for taking it slow and i have the 35 f2 on my xpro2 if i need quiker snaps of fast moving children. A bonus of the ovf of the xpro2 is that you dont see the lens breathing while focusing which i find can sometimes be distracting if i focus close and then far away

@@DanBaileyPhoto true true, it takes time. But its okey. Learning by doing. I bought the 16mm f2.8and the 23mm f2 and tomorrow i will get the 35mm f2. I am thinking about the 80mm for makros. Ah yes i forgot, i have the 55-200mm but to be honest, i never used it. When i was shooting with canon i had just zoom lenses. And the 55-200 was the first lens i ordered together with the 23mm. But sience i have prime lenses i dont want to have something else anymore. So ask me in a half year what i have done with the zoom lens. Then sometimes, but just just sometimes i want to get a littke closer to the scenery. But in then end i am never happy with the result of the 200mm....

I stumbled across this video having just purchased the XC version of this lens. I always liked the 50mm focal length on my FF camera so wanted something like that on my X-T20. However given that the XC is around £200 less here in the UK and I don't require the high end build quality or the weather sealing it seemed like a no brainer since it contains the exact same optics. I'm looking forward to getting out and about with it.

I've use a couple of the XC lenses, and you're right, they have the same excellent optics, but without some of the more durable build features found in the more expensive XF models. ​Thanks for the reply Dan. Yes the video provided some great options and ideas. My bread and butter is sports and landscapes. I shoot mainly sports for the local press and for this I have always used my Canon gear. However in March I decided to buy my first Fuji, just for me! :) In my spare time 90% of my shooting is landscapes so I like the idea of having lighter and smaller gear to carry with me. I also like the idea of having this 35mm on the crop sensor for slightly more intimate portrait shots. I find the 70-200 2.8 on the full frame sometimes leaves me very disconnected from my subject. So now I have both bases covered.

Steve, thank you for your feedback. For short telephoto lenses, I love the 50 f/2 and 90mm f/2. For longer glass, I'm a huge fan of the 50-140 and 100-400, although I do like the 55-200, because it's considerably less expensive and quite a bit lighter. This makes it great for travel and backcountry use.

I like the lens too, but shooting very near to something it gets really soft! So I avoid it for macro like shots which is really sad, because at f2 formbarere away stuff it is really sharp, but macro? The 16-80 does this much better.

Dan, I'm very much of the same opinion with these simple yet effective lenses. On my X-T2 I use the following, Samyang 12mm F2, XF-23mm F2, XF-18-55mm 2.8 and XC-50-230mm. I've noticed that the majority of the time i shoot with the 23mm, I love its simplicity and its forcing me to be more creative and use my feet to zoom in and out. I'd be interested in your opinion Dan in the following scenario; as a climber/alpinist i try and keep weight to a minimum and my X-T2 is my only exception to this rule, as i can't achieve the same results with a phone. My predicament is in order to reduce weight, which lens do I use, as i will only take the lens on the camera and no more? I don't use video a deal so thats not so important. I've probably just answered my own question, but as a fellow climber I'd be interested in your opinion, thanks

Rick, for climbing with the X-T2, I would probably go with the 23mm f/2. The extra wide vantage point that the Samyang 12mm offers would be very useful, but it's a much bigger lens. That 23 is tiny, and from experience, the smaller/lighter/easier your gear setup is, the more likely you're going to take it out of your bag/pack and use it on the cliff. Plus the 23 is a good comprise between a wide angle and a normal lens, so I think it would allow you to get a good variety of wide to semi-close up imagery.

Navelee, the Fuji MCEX-11 and 16 extension tubes can be used on pretty much any of the Fuji lenses. Each one will produce a different level of magnification and the working/close focus shooting distance. My favorite two lenses that I use with my extension tube are the 35 f/2 and 23 f/1.4. Unless you’re often shooting in really challenging weather conditions, I see WR as being a bonus feature rather than a necessity. In real life, if it’s raining that hard, your bigger challenge is keeping water off of the front of the lens, not worrying about whether it’s getting inside the lens.

It seems as if camera stores, and even the companies themselves, like to push zoom lenses, when there’s a certain confidence that can be learned by practicing with fixed lenses.

That’s a tough one. The slightly wider view of the 23 might come in handy for street scenes and environmental portraits. The 35 is better for tighter details and head & shoulders portraits. So, it depends on what styles appeal to you more. That 23 1.4 is an amazing lens, wicked fast and crazy sharp glass, but it’s definitely a bit bigger. The 35 f/2 is way more compact, if that‘s a concern.

The shot at 10:05 confuses me. The way the mountains are blurred makes the person looks like a mini figurine. Were the mts blurred in post?

Lucas, that image was shot with the 35mm f/2 lens, but also using "Miniature Mode," which is one of the Adv. Settings on the X Series cameras. 18-55 at f5.6 is what i'd prefer over this for landscape. And really? for portrait i'd get 35mm f1.4 or even 23mm f1.4 or 56mm f1.2... this glass is applicable for street, no doubt faster focusing, but prefer the pulling manual focus ring in 23mm f1.4 for zone focus or 16mm f1.4

How do you think this lens stacks up to the 35mm f1,4? I think of selling my 35mm f2 for buying that lens (for the magic and because the 35mm f2 has lot of focus breathing in video).

Hardcore pixel peepers will say that the 35 f/1.4 has slightly better image quality. However, the 35 f/2 has a newer, faster, quieter AF motor, and it's weather sealed. I haven't used the f/1.4 version, so I don't know how it performs when shooting video. I would try it out in a store if possible.

2:28 and again most photographers, even pro ones, continue to insist about focal length equivalence with the same wrong assumption. You'll not get a classic 50mm lens look like a 35mm film camera - or full frame digital sensor - with a 35mm lens on a 1.5x crop sensor digital camera, you'll just get about the same magnification because of the cropped field of view but you'll get a different depth of field and perspective compression. Focal length is not affected by the sensor size, just the crop of the final image is, focal length is a fixed physical distance and not a theoretical calculation. You don't change the perspective compression with different sensors or different film size, given the same focal length. In order to have a 50mm look you need a 50mm focal length lens, of course you'll end up with differently cropped images on differently sized sensors.

Robert, thanks for your comment. Yes, technically, you are correct. When comparing lenses and converting focal length to crop factor, in order to make up for different sensor sizes, you won't reproduce the EXACT optical characteristics of the "equivalent" lens you're comparing it to. I never said that you would. What you will get is a similar look and feel with regards to angle of view and magnification/compression, and that's a pretty significant element when we're talking visual characteristics of different lens. I think it's a bigger component than trying to parse out the DOF differences in what a given aperture will give. In real life terms, I think that's kind of a moot point, because what does it matter if my 35mm f/2 lens won't produce an identical optical look at f/2.8 as my old 50mm f/1.8 will at f/2.8? I use the lens(es) I have available to me, and make it work for my style and subject matter, based on it's visual characteristics and my own creative vision. Also, when trying to review a lens, especially for people who actually used to use film cameras, it does help to compare angle of view relative to crop factor, because it gives people a point of reference for the angle of view and the general look and feel they can expect from a given lens.

I understand your point and I know that we can compare things even when they're not perfectly identical but close enough to ignore the difference. I admit that if we're talking about a 35mm lens on a 1.5x crop factor and compare it to a 50mm on full frame yes we can say that there's not a big difference in compression from an optical standpoint. DOF is another story on itself, frankly I think that it's mostly affected by the focus-distance/focal-length ratio given an optical aperture value than the crop factor conversion itself, but it's just my opinion and I agree that it can be argued. At this point I'm sure you know better than me that the optical perspective and compression differences become more obvious when we start to enter short-telephoto and medium-telephoto ranges while comparing sensor formats. I'd say that focal length equivalence in terms of visible results starts to lose meaning more obviously, if you agree with me. In the end, if you just compare the 35mm focal length lens on a 1.5x crop factor sensor to the 50mm focal length lens on full frame and say they have an almost identical "look", I can agree with you because we can ignore the very technical differences. We should probably find another way to talk about "equivalence" if we want to apply the principle to all focal length ranges without confusing technical references with aesthetic ones.

Robert, I'm certainly not one to shy away from the technical geekery. It can be engaging to discuss/discover/debate the exacting qualities of a lens, or two similar lenses can compare, but I find that's like comparing guitars. A Stratocaster and a Les Paul basically operates the same way, but they have certain fundamental technical differences in their design. In some ways, they can produce a similar sound, while at other times, they can sound radically different. Of course, all of that falls aside when a person puts one of these in their hands, exercises their individual creativity and produces a piece of music. Photography is the same. It's fun to geek on the technical stuff, but in the end, it's the creative process and end product that matters. At that point, the gear is just a tool.

The Fuji 35mm f1.4 is much better lens. Focuses a bit slower but is not an issue. It's smaller, faster, sharper and lighter.

Alan, I use the 1.4 and can’t agree. It’s heavier and a bit bigger. Granted it’s sharper and faster (little slower focusing though) but if cost and size is important then the F2 is the one. Both fantastic.

I've owned both, and can assure you they are both equal in terms of iq from f2 onward. The 1.4 is OK wide open, it can focus closer, slightly but you get heavy vignetting. This guy stating its (1.4) lighter and smaller has clearly never used the f2

all good! except that a 35mm can NEVER GIVE THAT 50MM LOOK all it gives is the 50MM FRAME, like a 56mm f1.2 will have the compression and 'look' of a 56mm lens it ONLY GIVES frame of 84mm lens.

From a technical standpoint, there is truth to that, but I tend not to dwell on those kinds of details. I go by what I see in the viewfinder and whether I’m excited by the results and the look that a particular lens gives me. To me, that’s what matters in photography. "Better" is relative, as are many aspects of photography, but if you have the 35mm f/1.4 and you enjoy using it, then that's what matters to you. Dan Bailey There’s great distortion with the F2. I had it for a while. That distortion is corrected in camera for the most part but it does affect the sharpness of the lens. Yes everything about photography is pretty much subjective. I sold it and went back to the F1.4. I like the extra stop of light And I like the way the images look better. And I do know that’s subjective.

Dan Bailey I have an XT2 but I am drawn back to my original X pro one with that lens I just like the combination. I think there’s something above the X pro one the way the sensor captures things. I shot film with a Leica M2 which I still have and the X pro one reminds me of that. But I understand the value of the smaller Fuji lenses. I sold my 56F 1.2 and got the 50 mm F2 which I like much better. I also shoot a lot with the X100 F

Mark, It's funny- even though each new generation of camera keeps getting "better," (there's that word again...), sometimes we simply prefer a specific form or object that may not represent the latest and greatest. I liken using and older camera to using a vintage guitar. Sure, the pickups and electronics aren't as up-to-date as the newer models, and the neck wasn't laser cut, and the pickups might even hum a little bit at higher volumes, but there's a certain magic about that older guitar that just can't be replicated with brand new technology. Also, that little tiny 50 f/2 is a really special lens, it's one of my favorites!
