Personally, I love so many things about drawing (specifically in pen and ink) that it’s HARD to focus on one thing... I’m currently studying perspective, because I love to add depth to my drawings. Kim Jung Gi is one of my favourite artists out there, and I understand how he can do MANY things extremely well, but I feel like he’s mastered perspective in particular. What causes me to not enjoy my art is the fact that I copy references too much. I mean this in the sense that, I try to get it too “correct” like the original, instead of having fun with it by adding/removing parts from it. I still learn a fair bit through this, as it lets me see some of the challenges that the original artist had to tackle (which gives me insight on their process and what makes their piece appealing to me), but ultimately I feel like I’m taking too much information at once, and also copying with the intent of getting it “right”. Not sure if this makes sense but I’m just sharing my experience as a newbie. Sorry for the wall of text, can’t make paragraphs on mobile 😅

I think being able to enjoy our art is one of the most difficult things to apply when drawing. Masters knows how to use informations effectively, which should take years of practices

I'm 45 and could care less about how much better another Artist is than me. Life's to short and there's to many grown-up problems to worry about than why I'm not as good as Joe Shmoe . In short.. Art should be fun

You posted this at just the right time for me. Last night I cried myself to sleep because I saw a young kid talking about how she draws 8 hours a day during the summer, and her art is beautiful. Compared to her, mine looks like a young teens work and hers looks like the 19 year olds work. I feel like trash. All I want to do is make money doing what I love but my chances are getting slimmer and slimmer. My whole life I was manipulated and depressed, I’d draw an hour a day. Lately I’ve been in the same spot; I don’t get 8 hours to draw and if by some miracle I do I’m too tired to do it. I’m also poor and expected to put my older brother through school in the next few years while helping my mother with everything. Last night I just wanted to be someone else. I hate being in my own skin because I’ve never been good enough, and all of chances to be something have been taken from me. This video reassured me, thank you. Maybe there is hope.

This video has really helped me add to my ability to rationalise my own anxieties around my artwork 'not being good enough' and doubting my own skills, something that has been giving me some pretty intense art block. Thank you for making this :)

Dan, I have always enjoyed your content, but lately it seems that there is so much more substance to it! Not that it was lacking before, but I find myself looking forward to your videos because not only are they instructive and encouraging, but they address issues that artists, no matter their level, are facing. It's like where the rubber of artwork meets the road. I encourage you Dan, continue... from all of us who are transparent enough to admit that our artistic careers are not perfect, that we are at the core human...continue this mission of excellence that you are on my friend. We need more people like you in the artistic world. Thank you again, for quality content in a sea of quantity content.
