This was a great discussion. I do enjoy seeing Emmett. Emmett, you have a good screen presence and your voice is pleasant to the ear. What I really appreciate, Dan, is that you profile your film maker. I think that is unique in U Tube. You know these channels that have such excellent filmmaking and you know they’re not actually doing the filming but they don’t give credit to who is behind the cameras. So kudos for putting Emmett out front and center. You make a good team.

Well, Dan, you turned Emmett into a real backpacker! When he was little, the huz and I (that is, Emmett’s parents) tried to get Emmett to go hiking and backpacking with us but he balked, saying “there’s no wifi in the woods” and “why would I want to just walk all day?!” We’re glad you, Dan, could pull off what we couldn’t. The fishing thing, though…Emmett’s comment about “that’s on my parents” is totally on the mark. I stopped trying to fish after I was a little kid and out with my dad. I thought I’d caught a whopper and was excitedly reeling in my huge prize, only to find it was a discarded and full-of-water snowmobile boot. Anyway, engaging and fun video/discussion, both of you!

Dan! Way to go! Coincidentally, I have my own Grand Canyon story. I rafted the canyon in 2020. We had a freak accident and my right lower leg was crushed between a boulder and a large commercial raft. I had to be med-evac'd out of the canyon. 15 screws, 2 steel plates, and 5 months of rehab later, I returned to the Canyon almost a year to the day and did the whole trip over again. I had a great time AND slayed my 'fear dragons' as well. Thanks be to God for the courage it took to do that again. And yes, my family tried to talk me out of it. So I completely relate to the significance of you going back. Can't wait to hear about your experience when you return. God will use it for your good. ❤ PS - you are a badass! 😁

My husband and I were looking to replace our old MSR Sweetwater filter that we had for many years. It filtered a lot of water for our family of 5 over the years! Your videos (and Miranda's video) about the great work that Sawyer is doing was the deciding factor for us and we can't wait to use our new Sawyer Squeeze this summer on our various Sierra adventures. Thank you for highlighting the work that they do and thank you to you, and Emmit, for bringing us all great backpacking content. Good luck with your Grand Canyon trip. I think a much less aggressive itinerary will help you heal a bit from your last trip and help you make peace with such a beautiful place. Happy Trails!

Good job! I'm a total newbie here, seen a handful of your Grizz attack vids. A brother in law was attacked by a black bear when he and his buddy was 16 years old. A horrific story, Rick's body was 2/3 covered in claw and bite mark, massive scars, his buddy had one of his back calf's torn off, I believe, leaving him with skin in front and bone, each played dead while the other was being mauled, bear left them for dead. They called out to each other assuring both were concious and alive, finally got up and took off. Then ran a long ways for help..If I recall they scaled a fence at one point. My sister shared the story many yrs ago. This was, I believe in the Bitterroot Mountains, in Montana, where we all grew up. The bear actually drug them out of there tent. Yes, Dan, the Lord does intervene, doesn't He! Even when people are clueless that He did! Stay safe, Joanne

Dan, kudos for going back. You’ve become a favorite! Old lady canyon story..my mom was friends with some of the rangers stationed there back in 1960’s. She was huge ..almost 250#’s.. I was 10 years old. These guys were looking at reopening Hermit s Rest trail..it had been close for years… there was a super extensive trail system in the canyon in the 1920’s. Seven rangers, mom and me… all the way down, back out .. three of the guys stayed behind to be sure she got out, lol! They were terrified they’d have to pack her out😂.. Really enjoyed hearing Emmett’s. spin.. On anxiety…it’s so real…PTSD is not for wimps. We’re doing the Ozark Trail Sobo , the 15th…at 72 I’m wondering what the blip I’m doing 😂😂😂 But seriously, we are following and thinking of you.waiting for updates. ❤❤

Dan and Emmit, I so envy you. In 2016 my son and I went to Nairobi to a mission to see how we could partner with them. My son is now in the process of building a school on the edge of the largest slum for the children of the slums - yes I am very proud of him. - But I was in the wildlife sanctuary that you were talking about. We did not camp overnight there as we could not make those arrangements at that time but we took a private guide in an open Volkswagon Bus through the back roads of the reserve and saw incredible wildlife and fauna - halfway through we stumbled upon a male lion with two females right by the side of the "path" we were driving on. The guide stopped the vehicle less than 8 feet away from the lion(we were literally talking about how my son could probably reach over and touch the lion from the open-top van we were in). My son stood up to take pictures and was leaning out over the top of the VW bus trying to get the "best" shot and the guide was joking about how the lion would find him a tasty meal, when the male lion who had been sleeping, rolled on his stomach, looked up at us, roared, as only a lion can roar and made a fake lunge towards us, all in a split second. My son threw himself backward and rocked the whole van, screaming at the top of his lungs. How do I know all this took place? Well, I was holding my camera on my son with the lion in the background filming him filming the lion. The guide and I were laughing so hard at my son's reflex reaction that I couldn't hold very steady for the shot - my son got mostly lion face charging, and I got mostly the top part of my son throwing himself backward to escape, with the van obviously rocking to his movements, the guide got a great story and a huge laugh at the Americans. It is my favorite short video of our trip and my son was glad as he laughed at himself that he hadn't soiled his pants as both he and I discussed "what just happened" after it took place. I wish/pray for all the best on your return trip/mission. My son has been back several times since then but I have not been able to go and probably will not be able to in the future. So all that to say I envy the "adventure" you will have even if a "lion" is not involved.

A video especially if someone would be interested in doing a solo trip or two inexperienced hikers. best places to consider for beginners which trails and so forth. :)
