I can vouch from my experience by using only butter and balm. It does make a huge difference when having oil first. Also, I notice my beard and skin is happier when I put oil and then butter or balm. It is a fascinating reaction. Great video Dan. 👌🏻

I’m a week into finding your channel and have been binge watching like crazy! Before finding you I didn’t know much about beard care at all, I washed my beard with shampoo and that was about it. The info you bring to us is revolutionary especially if you don’t know a bearded brother in the know who can show you the ropes. I’ve recently just made an order for some LCW and some more oil. Next week I’ll be ordering a few butters to try. Thanks for your commitment to the beards out there Dan C I follow your recommendations!

I have used Honest Amish beard balm after a shower for years. I rub until melted, get it in deep and against my skin like an oil, comb it through, works great. I have never used an oil yet (except Bossman sometimes), just too much to buy for me. I use butters and other balms as well. Some time ago I struggled with beardruff badly and I never knew beard products existed until I researched how to solve the problem. These days my beard is happy. Which, is just my experience, of course, not a disagreement. I must admit I am in love with butters. I find balms and butters cling luxuriously inside my stiff, gnarly gray hairs.

I'm glad you released this video. One of your most informative videos for sure. Everything you said makes total sense. The fact that you said butter remostisfies is the star fact to pay attention to. Ppl will argue that butter has oil in it so it is just like putting oil in but clearly everything you mentioned proves different.
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly!! I cannot stand that arguement. Butter has oil in it so it has to be the same as oil. Beer has water in it, but it certainly does not act like water...

A little late here, but I was thinking the exact same thing... Since some of the ingredients listed are oils, I expected them to behave as oils and be absorbed into the skin while the butters would behave like butters and stay in the outside and layering (emulsifying?). I'm not arguing that the video makes perfect sense, but I also thought that the absorption ratios would be an important factor. Am I wrong?

After eight years of a clean shave (head and face), I'm only two weeks into regrowing my beard. Even st this early stage, I realize the different roles that oils and butters play in caring for our beatds. Oil is primarily for moisturizing the skin beneath our beards, while butter functions as a leave-in conditioner for softening and strengthening the beard hairs.Just my brief experience.

Unpopular opinion: beard butter killed the need for oil, and the oil market. All those nutrients and skin moisture qualities are still present in a butter, in a much better combination because of shea. That rhetoric about its form (resolidificatoom) doesn't matter, a better combination of beard and skin foods is still making contact where it matters most. Oils are inferior in every measure that matters.

Plus a lot of these butters already have the oils in them. I like different opinions and hearing different people's experiences. But I also listen to good people and follow their advice and if it works for me I will continue. But I definitely like butter way better, sometimes I will even use shea butter all by itself because it's the true Superstar but I usually will use a little beard oil first just experimenting with that and I do like both so why not I even have shea nut oil as a single oil to use for different things.

Thanks Dan. Yep, oil in the ante meridiem for skin and beard (after a cold rinse), then the balm to help keep these wild gray hairs in place and butter at night for the beard. For me, this works out well. I have no itchiness all day (and I smell good) and when I wake in the morning I may have bed beard but tangles are at a minimum.
@athletejmv
@athletejmv 5 жыл бұрын
Balm is my staple. It moisturizes and keeps the beard in place. I apply oil after showers only unless the skin is itchy... oil is mostly for the skin. Personally, oil just makes my beard look thin and stringy. Other beard owners may have different preferences and care needs. If I could only use one beard product, it would balm. period.... not oil, not butter. Balm has oil... plus the wax.

Well said. As I’ve said before I depends on how I’m feeling that day. I do bounce around with my routine. 99% of the time it’s oil in the morning (sometimes a dab at lunch because of how dry my job is) oil/butter at night. I do like to blend oil/butter together after night shower sometimes. I feel as though I get beat of both worlds when I do that, maybe not as much penetration with the oil but pretty good especially before bed. Jmo. Good point, do what u wanna do but I appreciate the science behind why.

Old routine for yearsssss (bearded since 2013) was wake up, go to work, maybe put balm or butter in if I remembered, work all day, go home shower and wash beard everyday (I sweat and get dirty from 8:00-5:30) towel dry and put oil in and that was the daily routine, I could tell my beard was lacking but just didn’t know better. After discovering your channel I started putting balm or butter in every morning, get home and use a beard wash, then use a co wash, towel dry and oil, and butter before bed. It’s made a world of difference.

This video was definitely needed! I have been using just butter, but your opinion/thoughts/research convinced me. Butter is a product that seems to have a lot of utility (logically, it’s a mixture of oil and balm, and when used alone I can save some money) , and that is something that sells me on butters. BUT, after watching this video I know I can still get the utility of the butter and save money while also using oil. Right now I am using a homemade beard oil made from a few natural carrier oils (spent $25 on sweet almond, jojoba, castor and droppers) and now I have enough oil to last me the year. Using my scentless, inexpensive oil then allows me to pay for high quality butters with great scents without my wife getting mad! Oil and butter in morning. Butter at night. Oil then butter when I shower. Thank you teacher! -wesbae

I get what you are saying about the difference between butters and oils. Some of the butters becoming solidified again after coming back to room temperature. As well as the difference in benefits between oils and butters. Im thinking though that there is the same oils that are in an oil in the butters. Take Detroit Grooming for example. They only add butters to the same oils they use in the beard oil. Wouldnt the oils that are going to be absorbed into the skin and hair be absorbed by the time the butters got the chance to solidify? Kind of the same as with the oils that are in a beard oil that are more for protection/coating. The oils that are meant to be absorbed are absorbed; and then the coating is formed. Same as with when you use a butter at night. The oils that are meant to absorb are absorbed to nourish; and then the coating is formed to lock it. I get that maybe the same oils react differently when mixed with the butters, but Im still thinking they are composed to do the job of being absorbed prior to being sealed in. What am I missing? (Disclaimer: I get majority from my information from you. Im not trying to prove you wrong. Ha.)

For me in the morning it’s oil and then balm. At night I shower so it’s Honest Amish beard wash, conditioner then oil and butter. Once a week I use a Pine Tar soap instead of Honest Amish.

Dan. Thanks again!!!!!! What do you think about beard butters with wax listed near the last portion of the ingredients? I noticed some companies have wax and some dont. What do you prefer with butters? It seems if you want butter it should be wax free, but if you want some hold go to a balm.

I love both! I rotate between both types. The wax isn't always for hold. It has wonderful nighttime properties as well

Exactly butters only build a protective barrier it is not doing anything to the beard nor the skin. I personally don’t like beard balm.

Thats explains why you told me on another video that theres no concern with overconditioning with balms or butters. They dont add moisture so much as they lock in what is already there.

I've never used beard butter up until recently I only used oil and balm and noticed they always left my beard dry but I have a thick curly dry coarse beard so oil only keeps my beard moist for like 40mins or so. I'm using honest Amish oil

Hi, I was wondering if I wanted to still take my showers in the evening like I do now, but I want to put the beard butter on before I go to sleep, would you suggest using a wet towel or something to wipe the beard butter off in the morning or simply leave it on? (I will be putting on the beard oil right after my shower as well)
