Brother I personally think you definitely brought up a good topic with this one...I tried a balm in the beginning years ago when I got “PRODUCT” serious about my beard journey and in my ignorance tried beard balm thinking it was needed and quickly found out no point intended but being a black man I don’t think it’s needed for most of us...I feel most black bothers need more conditioning than hold because of the texture of our hair has natural body but like anyone else the conditioning is what makes the hair more pliable and manageable so for me through trail and error I’ve found beard oil, beard butter bees wax free, and raw Shea butter works well for me...Again great topic these questions need to be had brother because all PRODUCTS are not created equal✌🏾👊🏾.

I totally agree with you brotha. I stop using balm because even with a small amount. A half of a dime that is, it still absorbed into my pores and caused light spots to form. But every time I stopped using for a few weeks and just used oil, my recovery time was pretty fast. After six too eight months lesser and lesser amounts I said no more for me brotha. My skin is just too freaking sensitive I think.

Hey D Hyde, Thanks for sharing your beard experiences and expertise. My beard couldn't be any more different from yours -- mine is snow white and very straight, but I've had similar experience with balms - the build up, weighing my beard down. Since deciding to exclusively use beard butters and not balms, my beard has never felt softer. I haven't even missed the control or hold from the beeswax. And, I've been making my own beard butter at home which I like better than any other I've tried - shea butter, argan oil, and sweet almond oil. My next batch, I going to use shea butter, jojoba oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and a little castor oil (since my gray beard hairs are very thin, castor oil should help with fly aways). Keep up the work and thanks for your wisdom, my friend!

So I have to tell you D Hyde. I watched your video with butter versus balm and then I saw the answer video with Lump Confirming what you said and then Lump suggested watching beard tube to see what he said. I've had a whole thing of butter that I've never used to but I tried it because my beard is a little long right now. Just beard butter And a little bit of beard oil and man the results have been phenomenal just in the last few days I've done this. Once again thank you for all the information you give and that 1 you just did was a jem. Companies better start stocking up on butter cause this is about to go wild in 2020.

When my beard was shorter it would hold it in place for about an hour and then the craziness would pop back out. Now I just use oil and butter and it works great. Every now and then if I have a spot that won't stay down, I'll use a bit of balm to help get it back in place, but it doesn't happen very often.

I made the mistake of thinking beard balm or butter were the way to go. I have dumped them both and switched to oil and now my beard doesn't feel heavy and unnaturally greasy! Beard balms and butters have also ruined my clothes. Imho as a relative novice bearded man. The correct amount of oil is a 100% the best way forward. The longer my beard gets the more it loves oils! Butters seemed to dry my beard out and make it really curl up. Balms just too sticky for me personally.

Great topic. The last balm I used during the day was from SP. and it was just a little dab. I tried to find ways to utilize all the balms I had back in the day, so I started using them for night routines. Strong agree on the fact that Beard Balm is rather bad for curly or long thin beards, its more suitable for the straight or wavy type or facial hair. With curly thick hair such as yours, I'd go with a lighter product like a whipped butter too. And a small objection on the balm layering: beeswax, just like shea and mango butter or the Carrier Oils is absorbed by your skin and hair throughout the day. If it starts layering up, youre likely using too much product or your product is too dense for your skin and hair type. Anyways, thanks for sharing that video, it certainly will help many people to overthink their morning routine :)

Question, is it possible that a certain brand of balm makes the hair shrink? Or is it best to just continue to comb the beard throughout the day regardless if balm is used or not?

I had the same experience. Beard Balm weighs curly and kinky beards down.

What’s a good butter to use y’all ? I’ve tried a few different ones they sell in stores and I don’t like em. I’ve only had one that I felt was good and liked and that was from Russ Beard Grooming. But they’re an independent company out in ATL.

I have thick coarse beard. I use beard balm everyday. Wash & condition my beard maybe twice a week. I’ve been thinking should I stop using the beard balm and use a different product. Due to exactly what you was explaining in this video. My beard seem shorter and I know it’s longer than what it is. However, what other product would you recommend for thick coarse beard?
