well dance makeup is not really for looks, it is so bold because our faces will get washed out on the stage with all of the lights

at my studio, makeup is optional for recitals, especially for the younger ages. some choose to wear it but some don’t. but for competition you have to.

So, the boys --- do they have to go through hours of prep to dance? Why does it have to be all this contrived heavy makeup? What about just dancing and not focusing on all this superficial stuff?

Sheryl Pockrose As a competitive dancer myself, part of your score at a dance competition is your facial expressions and when you have bright stage lights on you... your facial features kind of disappear. So we wear so much makeup because you need to see our faces.
