I saw this comment on the original video by Kashaun McGhee and it might help you: "I have a legit theory to this MV. So the song is about love, a bad breakup to be specific, and how the guy(The one who's pride is hurt and he crashed his car) is feeling lonely and awful and basically all of the bad emotions that come with breakups. So in the video, the band isn't poisoning the people with their food. They actually made it with love. It just turns out that love is so destructive and powerful, the people got addicted to it and wanted more. They craved and desired it so much it destroyed them and killed them. I don't know, that's just my dumb theory lol."

I agree it's about love, but I think it's about the fuxked up relationship between him and his father, who was in scientology.

Their videos are always super metaphorical. (Everything they do is really) Tillians father was a member of scientology, I think the music video and lyrics talk about the pain and fucked up parts of religious trauma. Atleast that's my way of interpreting it. As for Jon acting weird and crazy, that's just Jon LMAO! he kinda cooky

Lyrics are about a break up and addiction. As is the video. Basically the break up was caused by someone having an addiction. They didnt figure it out until the significant other left them. They let their addiction take over their life until it was basically too late. Until, they finally snapped and tried to kill themselves. They lived and that's when they realized what the other person was trying to bring to their attention. The hollow phone is basically the person has moved on, and he calls them to say that even with all they went through he still loves them. The video shows that people have vices, and everyone has things that they enjoy. But if you have too much then you lose your self. You get caught up in the moment and a lot of times when you figure it out its too late or you are already dead.

Dude, literally stumbled on your channel and watched all your vids one after the next. DGD is my all time favorite band. You gotta start hitting up some of those older albums though, some really good stuff on their earlier albums. You can even catch our boy Will Swan (Weeknd’s Cousin) doing the screaming (dirty vocals) on the album Happiness. Check out the song ‘Tree Village’ on that album. That album also has Strawberry Swisher Parts I and II on it. Also: Downtown Battle Mountain (Jonny Craig instead of Tilian) - Lemon Meringue Tie, Antlion Dance Gavin Dance (Self-Titled) - Me and Zoloft Get Along Just Fine, Rock Solid Downtown Battle Mountain II (Again Jonny instead of Tilian) - Basically the whole album, but my personal favorite is Thug City Acceptance Speech (Tilian’s debut and recurring vocalist) - Doom & Gloom, Demo Team And from there you’ve been doing songs from Instant Gratification and onwards, so. Damn good job otherwise. P.S. don’t forget our boy Tim Feerick on bass.

Just FYI lyrics won’t make much sense. The screamer (Jon Mess) had a lot of nonsense lyrics but that’s what makes this band so much fun.

@Suzanne Nichols Damaged pride and vulnerable, all my fears are open now Never thought this would hit me so hard Staring at my hollow phone, not sure if you're coming home Bed still smells like I'm not all alone again I know we fucked it all up this time We got so high (Couldn't see the bottom) I just crashed my car And it got me thinking of you So I just thought I'd call To tell you, to tell you I, to tell you I still love you My mental image impaired, undid the braids in my hair I rain destruction in the fight of my inner feels Remove the tricks of the trade, you're just alone on the stage There's no witness, fly your soul through the windshield Damaged pride and vulnerable, all my fears are open now Never thought I could hurt you so hard Staring at my hollow phone, wondering if you've found your home Feel like I deserve to die alone again We really fucked it all up this time We got so low (Only for a second) I just crashed my car And it got me thinking of you So I just thought I'd call To tell you, to tell you I, to tell you I still love you Take a sip from the drain, the flavor tastes like nothing Or nothing tastes the same 'cause nothing is never there I know what I'm talking 'bout, believe the words in my mouth 'Cause I can say that it was all just a metaphor In my heart and in my own mind, in my soul (You know that I won't stop) I know that they ain't never gonna break me (I'm coming back on top) In my heart and in my own mind, in my soul (Don't call that it's a flop) I know that they ain't never gonna break me (I got the refs on lock) In my heart and in my own mind, in my soul (Damaged pride and vulnerable) I know that they ain't never gonna break me (I'm coming back on top) In my heart and in my own mind, in my soul (All my fears are open now) I know that they ain't never gonna break me (I got the refs on lock)

I've been a long time DGD fan, and yes, as @Monika Lopez said, Jon Mess does have nonsense lyrics, but most of the time, they fit in with the theme of the what Tillian sings. So in the case of this song, it's a break-up song. What I thoroughly enjoy about Mess' lyrics are how interpretive they are, and can be. To me, his first verse is talking about the mental impact of a bad break up. "I rain destruction in the fight of my inner feels", paired with the previous line "My mental image impaired" implies self doubt, and asking if he wasn't good enough for the other person in the relationship. "Remove the tricks from the trade, your just alone on the stage" to me is just a straight up line conveying how alone and empty you can feel after a relationship ends. Then the last line "There's no witness fly your soul through the windshield". In correlation with Tillian's line "I just crashed my car", I feel like this line can be literal from Tillian, but then when put into the context of what Mess is saying, it could be figurative. "I just crashed my figurative car, I'm broken because we split up, as if my soul flew through the windshield." OR in a more literal sense if you take into consideration the lyric right before soul through the windshield, "There's no witness", which could be that he waits until he's alone to express just how much in sorrow he truly is on the inside. Either way, both sets of lyrics play on each other, and makes you think about two types of scenarios someone could go through during a break-up. The next verse John screams I feel really paints a picture of going down the spiral of drinking away his feelings, or alcoholism. "Take a sip from the drain". Alcohol can come from a tap, and overflow goes into a drain. In a way, he's saying he feels he doesn't deserve the tap, because as mentioned previously in his last verse, he doesn't believe he's good enough. "The flavor tastes like nothing". He is so numb to the taste of alcohol, it tastes like nothing. He then further explains the taste of nothing with the next line "Or nothing tastes the same because nothing is never there". But this line has double meaning, because again, last verse he feels empty. His soul went through the windshield. He is numb to everything, therefore everything feels the same, which brings up the question, "can something even be what it is if its the same as everything around it?" Which would imply that it's nothing, and not really there. "I know what I'm talking 'bout, believe the words in my mouth". The line before this sounds crazy, but he's not crazy because he is only trying to describe how he feels. He knows what he is saying. I believe the lyric "believe the words in my mouth" isn't necessarily a demand, but a plea. "Cause I can say it that was all just a metaphor". This is still anchoring on "nothing tastes the same because nothing is never there", meaning that if him saying that DOES in fact come across as him acting crazy over this break-up, and you as the listener believe the way he is dealing with said break-up is crazy, he can always fall back on explaining it away as a metaphor, and to not take him seriously. Again, this is playing on the theme of feeling defeated, and having self doubt. I feel that he truly believes that he makes sense to himself, but he can feel easily invalidated in these feelings by someone simply saying "No, you're acting crazy" because the place he is in is so vulnerable and raw. And then finally his ad-libs during the outro. "You know that I won't stop, I'm coming back on top, Don't call that it's a flop, I got the refs on lock". Even though he knows that it's over between him and his ex, he knows that things will get better in time. Giving the song a hopeful ending. No matter how dark of a place you can be in, you can rise out of it. "Don't call that it's a flop", Don't count him out just yet. "I got the refs on lock", I take this meaning that he is the referee to his own future, and it's a play on paying off the refs in a sports game to give an unfair advantage to a certain team. Well in this case, he is the ref, and he has the advantage because he knows he will come out of this better than ever. You then pair those two lines with Tillians ad-libs on the very last verse, which are the first two lines of the song, and you have a super uplifting ending to a rather, dark and sad song. "Damaged pride and vulnerable, I'm coming back on top, All my fears are open now, I got the refs on lock". Right now, he's hurting, but he's going to come back stronger, everything he feared that would happen as a result of the break-up happened, but he's his own referee in this game (the ex-relationship) and he ISN'T going to be betrayed by himself. Betrayed by the Game. This is how I interpret the song anyways. The song title is purposely misleading, and the song has you thinking it's dark and sad, but at the end, comes around to being a hopeful ballad of ones self-worth, and picking yourself up off the ground to get out there and try again.

I think the point is more about how the biggest wrecks/wildcards you've been involved with are reflexively your closest confidants; I can attest to how I would often contact a girl I used to know when I needed that familiar catharsis. It's a song that should be considered a warning for those who have felt that way. I think the music video has almost nothing to do with the lyrical purpose but it does hint at the delicious toxicity of these kinds of relationships. I wouldn't take it any farther than that. Definitely feels like a John Mess production.
