On the guitarist thing, I know Will Swan is the primary writer of the band and the only “full time” guitarist. They normally have Andrew Wells (vocalist for Eidola) tour with them as second guitar or the guy from Icarus the Owl when Andrew can’t. But they do tend to have guitar features on their albums here lately.

According to Will himself, he wrotes the music with Tim and Matt and then they send it to Jon and Tilian who write lyrics together.

To your question about the guitars. Actually Will writes 2 guitar parts. And then record them both. And often he'll have another guitarist come in the studio and record the second part. Mostly his friend Martin that does secret band. Or Andrew Wells from Eidola who is their touring second guitarist. And on this record he also had Sergio from Stolas and Royal Coda record some as well.

Great reaction! Just to clarify, they have had a few different bassists between their first album and now. I believe the current bassist has been with them since Instant gratification. As for them only having Will on guitar, that is complicated. They have another touring guitarist who also helps in the studio (I believe it is the guy from Eidola, who is signed to Blue Swan) but he is not an official member, hence just Will in the video. Great video! :)

Yeah, it's almost always a convenience thing in that sort of situation, as in the rythm they use for touring just generally has other stuff going on that he cant really commit to DGD absolutely all the time, which is fair enough. :)

They've only had one full time guitarist since right after Acceptance speech was recorded. They've been having "guest" collaborators work in studio and have a touring guitarist, who has recently become one of the guest collaborators for Artificial selection and probably this album as well. The two main guys who usually come in to help write are the other guitarist from Secret Band, their side project band, and their former guitarist who was in the band during the Kurt era. Their touring guitarist during acceptance speech was Aric Garcia from Hail the Sun but since Instant Gratification Andrew Wells, the singer of Eidola, has been their touring guitarist/backing vocalist. He was also featured as a vocalist in Evaporate in the parts that sounded pretty Johnny Craig-esque.

If this is their new direction, count me in. It's DGD though so.... I'm guessing this is an outlier. His vocals during the chorus are what did it for me; that kind of vocal control is more impressive (to me) than his usual stuff. It was a standard layout, but executed beautifully.

let's just say tilian is not the first vocalist who did a lil bit of screaming in Dance Gavin Dance.. for those who are old school will know that kurt travis did some scream too in the song 'tree village" and it was amazing but at that time no one pointed it out! that time i was like.. 'did Kurt just scream?" plus on the aspect of all dance gavin dance clean vocalists... they always dance on the stage... tilian is the best dancer tho

His screaming in Man of the Year felt closer to singing than screaming. It had a very specific notes in it. That’s prolly why.
