Really loving DGD's constant songwriting progression, they've really started evolving not only the song structures and instrumentals, but especially Jon's vocals. He is now using it on more than just a "scream this verse, wait for the next one, maybe some melodies here" - theyre actually using it as more of a chorusy,bridgey way, and the technique itself is more melodic and "singy" i suppose for lack of a better word. Its great, the section from 1:28 onwards is a perfect example of this. Really changing up the usual metal/rock approach to songwriting, where its so verse chorus heavy, and using the harsh vocals only for the verses. In this song they take the main stage a lot, and the singing is second, yet it works so well. DGD are on a totally different level, it's really impressive and enjoyable, especially since the music itself, the lyrics, are so indicative of total freedom and not taking itself so seriously, even though the songwriting itself is quite complex and different. It shows they're really enjoying it and, that, after all this time, they're still eager to create unique and different music, even with the title "Afterburner" setting an interesting precedent in regards to that.

That's what makes it so freaking amazing. It's basically art. The contrast between Tillians singing and Jons screaming work together so beautifully and it's something you rarely ever hear in music, and here it just fits. And not just this song either. It's every song since Tillian joined the band. I would suggest listening to Intertiatic Esp by The Mars Volta, you can hear the same kind of contrast going on. It's a way older song, and the band is in a different genre, but if you go on Dance Gavin Dance's wiki page they list the band as one of their musical influence, so when you listen to that song it makes sense!

Man... Who'd of ever thought they'd drastically change their sound over the years and still have the same unforgettable unique style? I mean, compared with Jon's screams in "people we know", "Alex English", and secret band, he's really known how to master his own type of screaming. Swan is writing more and more GrOoVy guitar parts and Matt is still at it with his drums. These guys are legends, and I wish they'd get much more recognition for it. Rock on🤘

Katie Snyder I remember in an interview Tilian said people keep using drugs or other things to feel artificially and need to just feel their feelings. And these lyrics? Yeah.
@melodyreiscott4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they're doing a lot of reversed writing on this album, and the difference is very prominent. But they still have their DGD flair and uniqueness, and it's so perfect 💜 I'm definitely loving how much more personable it feels (lyrical content aside, because he did also mention this album was much more personal lyrically anyways, and that shows through very significantly from what they've given us so far) with this style of writing, because while it's still great the other way around as well, this makes it all seem more realistic that it's quite a difficult feat to write and come up with something to place yourself into passionately and beautifully over something that's more or less chaotically delivered to you. I mean, not that they weren't able to pull that off before, like the majectic beings that they are, but this just feels so... Idk. So full of heart and inspiration.

Been hearing people talking about this band for years and singing their praises, but never bothered checking them out, thinking "Ughh, probably just another overrated band that's gonna leave a bad taste". Now this pops up on my feed today and I click on it thinking "Fuck it, I'll just see what the fuss is about I guess", and HOLY SHIT IS THIS GOOD. I already know every word of this song cause I've been having it on repeat for hours xD Now I really can't wait to check out the rest of their discography.

I agree with Shunyata. Listen to Mothership. I respect others opinions, but seriously...MOTHERSHIP. A couple songs to start with would be "Inspire The Liars" and "Chocolate Jackalope". But honestly Mothership is an album you can just throw on, put on some headphones and listen front to back. I never liked DGD until Mothership

Will Swan is a baller. My favorite guitarist of all time and has been since I first listened to Downtown Battle Mountain in 2007. A modern Jimi Hendrix (with all of the crazy guitar effects he creates), he's a musical genius no doubt.
@enjoiful Жыл бұрын
I can't believe he's the only guitarist in the band. It's crazy he has that much responsibility to compose. They must play life with a touring guitar to accompany him, but I can't believe he has sole duties on guitar.

I would give anything to hear Will Swan (The best technical guitarist alive IMO) and Thomas Erak (The most unique and aggressive guitarist I've ever listened to) do a collab. The chaos on that track would be so damn good.
@kazeshini22 Жыл бұрын
Love Will but in no way is he the most Technical Guitar player out there or even in the top 10. Jason Richardson would be my pick as most technical. Tosin Absai is another crazy one, Tim Henson, Scott LePage, Misha Mansoor, John Petrucci, Ichica Nito and so many more. I love Thomas Erak I think he is better than Will. You should check out some of these other guys. Especially Jason Richardson.

It took me about 15 listens but the story behind the video started to become clear. I believe Til is the narrator or the everyman in the story. Will is the backstabber that the narrator can't help but focus on; and in the end he still gets away even though he's had focus. Matt and Tim are keeping the plane steady, an analogy to the band itself as the rhythm section. Jon is the voice of people in your life supporting you, trying to steer you away from becoming obsessive about someone that's backstabbing and will ultimately desert you when the plane is crashing. But keep your eyes open, because the ship is going places that the backstabbers will never get the chance to experience.
