In almost every musical there is a curtain call song. The whole cast sings it (including villains and people who died during the show!) and gets their own moment to take a bow. It takes place just outside of the universe of show but it wraps everything up nicely and you get to cheer on the actors/characters. That is what the dance party is! Its a moment to say “well that was fun wasn’t it?” and allows each character to take their bow. No, it doesn’t make sense within the internal logic of the movie, but it doesn’t have to! Animated movies are similar to stage musicals in that they require a higher level of suspension of disbelief.

@kathrynmiller4240
@kathrynmiller4240 2 жыл бұрын
I also think it comes from the stage curtain call tradition. In the U.K. we do pantomime, which are stage plays of classic fairy tales with lots of silliness thrown in - c-list celeb casting, gender-swapped casting, audience interaction etc. They always end with a big singalong of a pop-song while cast members take a bow and get some final laughs. Shrek is basically panto on screen so a pop song/dance party makes absolute sense as an ending!

Dance party endings actually come out of theater tradition. Back during Shakespeare's time, it was customary to end a comedy with music and dancing to give the audience a fun note to exit on. Shows were more participatory back in those days, and it kept the audience in a good mood long after the show was over by having them dance as well.

@TristanDonaldson
@TristanDonaldson 2 жыл бұрын
@@JeffTheBunnySlayer No study is necessary. All I'm saying is that it's a cultural influence. Like, we all sing Happy Birthday in the US and elsewhere on someone's birthday. Do you know why we sing that song in particular? Did you know it was written in 1893 by the Hill sisters? Did you know it was originally titled "Good Morning to All"? Probably not. Everyone just sings the song now. People borrow a lot from Shakespeare (and others) without even knowing, because that's their culture. It's unconscious. That's all. :)

I think one of the major defining things good dance endings tend to do is this sort of... emotional lean in? Fantastic Mr. Fox does it really well. Before the dance sequence, the family is shown the supermarket, which is an amazing relief because just before hand it seemed like everyone was going to literally starve to death in the sewers. It was prefaced by a very dour scene panning to show everyone struggling to survive. But, once they see the supermarket, their joy and relief is pretty quiet and understated, even once its revealed they're having a child, in that Wes Anderson dialogue sort of way. Then, with a slight pause for emphasis, he looks right at the camera and turns on his radio-- and THERE'S the built up ecstatic joy. It feels so much more deliberate than other dance endings.

and i can't believe i'm gonna say that the robots dance party ending works, but it actually does feel earned. i mean the whole movie is basically fighting against the push from the rich robots to upgrade or die, so an ending where the robots get to live as they are, imperfect and still valued, does call for a big dance number. man i never thought about robots that hard before

When I was watching slum dog millionaire for the first time, I noticed that I think dance party endings tend to work better in live action then in animation is because of how they tend to break the audiences suspension of disbelief. It reminds me of curtain calls in live theater, as a point where you return to reality and stop seeing the actors as characters, but go back to seeing them as people. Meanwhile in animation, if your already suspending your disbelief to exist in an animated world where talking animals or minions exist, it doesn’t break the immersion when the characters start singing or dancing, it just feels like something we’ve seen before, and feels kinda lazy (the trend is also a lot more over saturated in animation, which leaves it feeling a lot more tired)

I really liked Flushed Away's dance ending. They did a really good job timing the musical numbers in that movie, but the ending goes out with a pretty cute little bang when the slugs whip out a high-energy version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Rolling on the River". The scene overall wraps up basically everything with a nice bow, song nails the theming of the movie, you get a couple new pieces of information about the characters and then the movie ends with "Where are we going?" "I don't know, but we're going to get there really fast." Leaves it open-ended and uplifting, you get the sense that the adventure is still going even after the movie ends. Also, I just really like Flushed Away.

I could be completely and utterly off the mark, but I think it's also a holdover of the lighthearted films from the mid century, which a lot of the executives and creators of these movies probably grew up watching. From the lighthearted, trendy genres like the 60s beach party films to 70s disco movies, you can see why dance numbers incorporated either throughout or especially at the end have influenced this trend here. You can see this being lampooned in films like Austin Powers, which was a hat-tip tp many goofy trends from the era in addition to making fun of James Bond specifically. Then as you said once Toy Story 2 and Shrek used the the trope, it became even more of a tradition in animated films in a much more sincere capacity than the latter ever did.

I remember a year or 2 ago, I wrote a crummy romantic comedy spec. The whole joke of the movie is that it’s inspired by those early 2000s comedies and meant to be terrible, and of course, it ended with a dance party. It was a fun script to write, would love to see it get made someday.

I disagree about the Zootopia ending feeling out of place. "Try Everything" was literally the centerpiece of the film, was diagetic and listened to characters that had previously listened to the song in film, and the strong thesis against the "people should remain in their bubble and not change" bias. Plus the only characters in the concert are those shown listening to the song in universe.

Yeah, Zootopia’s dance number was definitely earned. First of all, the characters don’t start randomly dancing, they are at a concert where you’re supposed to dance, second of all, Shakira’s style really fits this animal world (no offense South Americans, it’s a compliment, love this style), and lastly, what you said, the song represents the theme of the movie and has already been established to be pretty popular among the characters
@FigN06
@FigN06 2 жыл бұрын
I also think that the Zootopia dance number fit in the story because it's a kind of celebratory return to normalcy for their society. Everyone in the city had just been living in fear that any predator could inexplicably and violently turn on them at any time. And you had Gazelle earlier on camera saying that this divided Zootopia was not the city she recognized or the city she loved. So when the problem is completely rooted out and they all have no reason to fear their neighbors at the end? That's a fantastic time to party.

The Shrek movies at times were basically taking 70s 80s music and doing modern remixes to them. Something that's not new, but for the time during the 2000s, it just felt fresh and accepted. I guess it's because when I went to parties as a Gen z kid they would always alternate between songs like the cha cha slide or some bee gees song. I remember watching Robots, Shrek, Chicken Run, and even Spy Kids 2, and those movies would have dance numbers that me and my sister would dance to. We were little back then so we would just run around our room. Also I think the 2000s, in general, was a time when people actually wanted to look forward and forget the past. In terms of pop culture, make movies with innovative originality. It's why with movie remakes like Johnny Depp Willy Wonka, Peter Jackson King Kong, or live action Charlotte's Web, those movies were popular when they were in theaters because some of those movies wanted to distance themselves away from their originals, but today they're cult classics because this sense of originality or trends (like ending dance sequences) died by the early 2010s.

Something that also helps make movies end in a dance party is having them not come out of nowhere. Like with Robots, it is established early in the story that Rodney’s dad wanted to be a musician, and this movie is all about achieving your dreams, so it’s a touching end that the father who has supported his sons dream his whole life, is now having his dreams being supported by his son. The ending is touching in a way, and it gives Robots a justifiable reason to end in a dance number.

just realized that the dance party sections from shrek somehow had microphones, not any sort of magical/medieval replacement for them, just straight up regular microphones, you know people don't really have to go to a completely alternative parallel alternative from their own to celebrate with a dance party. only in shrek forever after it made sense since the characters from the other reality were present and i don't think shrek could've managed to find them all in his reality

Shrek's Dance Party works as well because the music firstly fits with the themes for the story; and it fits the scene, a wedding celebration after-party. Of course everyone's there having a party. The minor characters like the fairytale creatures are celebrating the fall of Farquad and the fact they can return home. They have REASON to celebrate. Shrek 2 also works; because... well... it was again supposed to be a party; and kinda wound up being a renewal of Shrek and Fiona's vows.

Dude Jojo Rabbit does this trope in such a meaningful way since Elsa (I think that was her name) answered Jojos question about what she’d do if she was free and doesnt have to fear about being killed anymore. She told Jojo that she would dance (I think specifically outside). At the end of the movie they bring this question back when Jojo takes Elsa outside after America won the war. They just danced in silence with smiles on their faces. Its so great.
