Now I finally got it! This is the best tutorial for compression ever! The scientific approach is the best way to fully understand any subject (at least for me), once you understand the compression behavior then you can effectively make the mental picture of the settings depending on the source (waveform). I Finally be able to effectively applied compression to my productions instead of wasting time using the empirical trial and error approach. However, with the scientific approach I won't need to spend a lot of time applying the right amount of compression. This was great thank you a lot!

Hey, first of all; thank you for amazing tutorials... I've been watching Console 1 and compression today and have to say I've learned more in a few hours than I ever though could be possible. I have one question concerning this section about attack & release. In you example you have a certain attack to keep the body of the kick for example and that I do understand. Then you have the release, but what I do not understand is where is the threshold in your example so when does the compressor "allow"" the release to begin? Isn't it so that it begins release when the audio sinks below the threshold and not before that? Maybe I just ask the wrong question, but thats so far the only thing that I do not "get":-) Thank you in advance. M

Hey! What happens in the circumstance like above where say, a later snare drum - JUST before another kick drum, triggers the compressor to work? Is the release still coming up and therefore you'd lose a lot of the transient etc on the kick drum, or does it sort of go back to square one each time something surpasses the threshold? Thanks very much, helpful videos :)
@dancetech4 жыл бұрын
if the release is set right (and often there is some compromise) then the comp wont recover between hits audibly, so all hits are happening when the comp hasn't fully recovered/released... but this just results in an 'even-ing out' of the sound.

totally great! im becoming less intimated by compression with each video!

Hey. So really like how thorough this whole series is, and I understand everything (I thought), but I'm hitting a snag here with some of the visualizations. The "envelope" image in Part 4 and how it then translates to the sound wave here is great. But the green backed sound wave with red envelope field with overlaid "envelope" here, that's not going to render the same as how the actual sound wave shape would look, right? The fact that a compressor is a "negative" creator and only turns things down is great, but that scooped envelope (happy face shape) would still be applying to a positive (frown face shape) volume wave. So that scoop in effect would actually be the theoretic difference in the shallowing of the frown face. No? These images just seem to contradict all the ones in the previous parts with the in/out spikes and the thres/ratio stuff. This makes it look like the volume gets lower than the threshold, not just brought down CLOSER to it. Does this make sense? Am I missing something?
@raverone9094 жыл бұрын
"This makes it look like the volume gets lower than the threshold, not just brought down CLOSER to it." You're right, and I can see where the confusion might be. This visualization does make it look that way, but if you remember that he spoke of unity gain, which means the compressor will reduce the gain below unity gain, not below the threshold. As you said, it brings it closer to the threshold. Keep that in mind and that should help.

Wow! The attack and release is way more important than I first .thought lol. I'm motivated to try this out on a guitar recording, I've never had much luck using compression on acoustic and nylon guitar before I hope now I get better results. I'm confused a little though, if a compressor is always active, a signal never falls back below the threshold, does that mean the compressor is doing nothing? or does the dynamic range above the threshold make the compressor behave differently still? You are amazing for doing these videos by the way, nice one!
@dancetech7 жыл бұрын
if the comp is active all the time then all the time dynamic range is being reduced. You can set the threshold "too low" on purpose so the signal is always over threshold & the comp is always working, just try it & see/listen, its all done by ear at the end of the day, but knowing what's going on helps.
@JamEZmusic867 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the reply, I'll be using the compressor more so now that I understand it a bit better. Subbed of course
@ram72747 жыл бұрын
Very nice tutorials. Thanks for your effort. I got one question, if there is no regular loud peaks (regular intervals) then how to measure what should be the release time, there may be kick spill after 200ms in the track, but after some time if the kick spill is after 150ms then how to determine what release we should keep so that next peak of kick is not compressed unnecessarily.
@dancetech7 жыл бұрын
always use your ears when adjusting compressors. (I'm going to make this clear in a 'final summary & general chat' video then I get the series finished). Just adjust the release listening for any artefacts you don't want - but of course sometimes those artefacts can work rhythmically or otherwise, so again, always use your ears. In these tutorials when I explain about attack/release is just so people know what is happening, after that use your ears always.
@ram72747 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. Yes, I understood that end of the day we have to use our ears. Waiting for your upcoming tutorials

When you use a compressor in Logic Pro X, does the wave form actually change in the track? I record a lot of "live guitar" from my amp directly into Logic and have been starting to use the compressor more deliberately - should I be looking at the waveform itself to see the impact of the changes, or is it just listening to the solo track?
@dancetech6 жыл бұрын
you would see the waveform change if for example you were playing some sort of plucked/plectrum'd licks with a clean setting at different loudnesses of hits, and after compressing you would see less dynamic range depending on how much compression you applied. With a hi-gain guitar you get almost no dynamic range anyways so you'd notice something different. Looking at the waveform is pointless anyways.

Ok- Maybe I understand:-) I am just confused about why is the compressor reacting to the kick, but affecting the synth too..? I would understand if the kick would react since you've compressed that and the release is relative to it, but why is it affecting the synth..? If I look at the negative side of the audio it looks like it should keep compressing for longer (if it' s reacting/connected to the synth too) before it starts to release... well I'll watch more of your tutorials and maybe I get it. Thanks!!!!!

6:52 According to the illustration compressor begins to release when the signal is still loud enough. Why is that?
@dancetech7 жыл бұрын
look at the sliver of the peak beginning which partly gets through. it;s way higher than the body of the wave that follows it. It's just that first peak that's triggering the compressor
@Kenjikenification7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answer. The point where compression work in full force is way lower than the waveform of synth. According to the gain reduction I imagine that Threshold set lower than the synth volume. So the synth must have been compressed.
@dancetech7 жыл бұрын
don't get too hung up on the accuracy of my hand drawings. the synth isnt way lower than the reduced level btw, it's just getting ducked down enough that you hear it rise back up when the comp releases
