Thank you. Finally found some clearly understandable explanation with examples about Peak and RMS. There are many videos, but hard to find clearly understandable with simple words and drawing. Now it's really clear for me.

Ive been a subscriber to tutorial series such as Groove3, askaudio etc but havent found a tutorial on compression thats as good as this. Thank you very much. This has been a great series and ive learnt a lot here than I did anywhere else about compression. Crystal clear explanation of concepts.

Hi, can you please please consider doing a similar tutorial for reverb. This area for the beginner to intermediate DAW user is such a minefield. I am talking about just using Logic X built in reverbs. This series on compression was fantastic by the way. Trev

I've watched all your tutorials about compression and they are really good. Thank you, Sir! Just one question, are you planning on doing some video about feedback and feedforward compression? I can't really understand those concepts, your teaching skills would be great on that subject :) cheers!

thanks. yes i need to finish this series. but the truth is, really understanding FF & FB compressors mean you're going to have to take it to degree level and get into circuit design. The combination of a compressor's side-chain method and gain reduction method (how the side-chain controls the compressor circuit) all together gives a compressor it's characteristic. I'm not sure it's useful for any user to know this. Even VERY experienced producers/engineers tend to just know the character of classic compressors they have available to them in a pro studio scenario, but it's not relevant to be able to explain totally what's happening circuit-wise beyond "well this optical compressor tends to make release program dependent" or whatever. Anyways, i'd best get it done sometime soon, sorry about that.

Thank you for your answer. As a begginer, I always asked myself if a producer/engineer needs to know all that's happening inside the different tools and you've already answered that for me. Thanks again, Sir!

Very good tutorial series! There's a thing that still puzzles me though regarding compression ratio. Let's say that we have a 4:1 compression ratio and have a peak that's 8 db higher than the threshold and a 4b higher than the threshold. The first will be compressed to 2 db and the latter to 1 db. So, the compressor will reduce the levels by 6db in the first case and by 3db in the seconds case. So, the gain reduction applied is not static but seems to change by how much the input signal exceeds the threshold. If this is the case, is this done by a sample to sample basis or some time window is used?

time, but these are just principals. compressors aren't really x-in = x out devices, the design of the compressor circuitry (and emulations of that in software form) determines how it reacts, as does the material being compressed. These are simply principals to understand, but always use your ears

You're right but there's a question in my mind. why not use peak com at every sound rather than rms mode ? we can make peak comp sound natural by adjusting the attack and release.....

is auto gain worth a video? the 0db and -12db settings seem weird. like its trying to match input to output gain. ive heard just turn it off maybe because its misunderstood.
@dancetech
@dancetech 7 жыл бұрын
No i dont really want to get into all that. auto-gain is just make-up gain. the comp tries to auto-set the output to match the input after compression has lowered the output. I personally always work manually.
@toddlask
@toddlask 7 жыл бұрын
cool. no worries. i agree, manually setting is better.

@@dancetech sorry. At 5:59 you showed the processed difference of Peak vs RMS files. Could you do the same for a vocal and guitar track maybe? The effects on the wave file for Peak and RMS compression. Thanks
@dancetech
@dancetech 5 жыл бұрын
oh i see, well there's no point me doing that, I've explained the principal, so you can simply load some guitar parts into your DAW & load up a compressor and try it in peak or rms and listen & learn how each sounds on different type of guitar material. Choppy staccato guitar (rhythm or pick work) or more smooth guitar will be slightly different etc... bear in mind also on heavily distrorted guitar the distortion tends to make it all the same level.

My compressor have been on RMS for 8 years so I never got the peaks. That's kinda crazy. I thought it was the presentation only, not active compression.
