The one dancing is geiko Toshihana. Tanekazu is the jikata geiko (singing).

I hired them, obviously. :P But really, there are certain places in hanamachi, that aren't quite ochaya but traditional restaurants, and you can hire geiko and maiko within that establishment. The restaurant I went to was actually owned by the Komaya okiya owner's son, so it was easy for me to hire the Komaya geiko and maiko.

God, i was cheering for you when you seemed unsure of what was neext ;A; you danced wonderfully, almost in perfect synchronicity with Toshichika chan D:!

@kiyoharal youre wrong, Toshiha (the westerner) is well known by Toshihana, and they have met on several occasions. She wasnt being arrogant and to be quite honest the geiko were probably amused and happy to see a younger person taking so much interest in the Karyukai.

You're sooo lucky! Urayamashii! Next time if you know that you'll have the chance to dance with them again, take attention to the choreography, because it's different when there are 3 dancers from that when there are 2 dancers. But apart of that you did a great job. Korekara mo ganbatte~ By the way I don't think you were rude. In old times it was common to sing or even dance with geishas. But nowadays people don't know old music, and they just sit and watch. I think they are happy to see that you take efforts to learn about their culture.

Wow, you dance well, hontou desu! Unfortunatly without a "kazura(?)" (wig) we cant see how you move your head. How long you practice? Lucky one who has connections to the world of flowers and willows.

why the maiko joined was because The Gion Kouta can only be performed by a maiko if a geiko is going to be dancing to the song Gion Kouta then a maiko has to join because the lyric " Gion Koishiya Darari no obi yo" notice the word Darari only maiko san wear darari obi so during that lyric the maiko shows off her special obi with her okiya crest on it geiko do not wear darari obi anymore so yea

I know this very well, this information is not unknown to me. However I had practiced the maiko role in the dance, and when she did join I figured she was just going to guide me through the maiko version, but that's not what happened. :) - (I'm the original poster, but on new account XD)

... ... ... culture clash, japanese hire geisha to enjoy the arts polished and mastered after years and years of constant daiy training, the westerner , and a girl not less hire a maiko and geiko to show what she can do, in japan that is considered arrogant and not very civilized, but geisha are masters at concealing their true feeling and act like this dancer is the epitome of grace and humility. anyway money easily earned ! i love the Heeeeeeeey Sugoooooooi in the end , soooo kyoto ! hai hai sugoi sugoi ! otsukareyasu !

That wasn't cool. I understand your way to pay respect to these women but dancing is their profession and must never be violated by an amature.

this is so sad, they used to be stars , artists, masters of seduction using wit and grace, today they are a caricature of the old Japan, an attraction for tourists. These girls who used to pride themselves for being elusive, only being approached by the real power brokers and leaders of the planet, today the most simple tourist with some money to spend can enjoy their company and bring some pictures home to say i met the unicorn, but the unicorn is dead, these are just horses with a horn stuck to their forehead. I am not criticizing these ladies, they are doing the best they can with whatever remains of the karyukai, especially in Kyoto. Kyoto has spend so much time worrying about the beauty of the kagai that they lost track of its significance. The okiya are become ochaya, the ochaya are closing, maiko and geiko wannabes from america europe and australia go to visit the karyukai and when they met these "arists" they now want to show them their skill and brag about being able to dance miserably the gion kouta, insulting the Inoue Ryu, rather than enjoy the priviledge to see these true professionals, dance for them. The patrons have deserted the karyukai, bored with the cliche that it has become and all the luster it has lost, and annoyed by these new customers who now want to entertain the geiko and maiko instead of learning from them. the big companies are now sponsors, the hikizuri and other accessories are becoming increasingly cheaply made . The charm is still there but the authenticity and the audace of these ladies who used to be risquee and the real trend setter of Japan, is long gone . Especially in kyoto. I am glad that kagai"s" like Akasaka and Shinbashi really still remain closed to tourists and non introduced customers, you would never see such a grotesque zashiki in these places. Kyoto has lost its soul when the emperor moved to Edo maybe that is why if the cliche remains in kyoto almost fossilized in its form on the street or on the glossy paper of brochures and calenders, the only true and authentic geisha maiko and geiko are not what is showing on this video. This video is just a perfect example of okiya trying to survive and forced to compromise , and the famous Kyoto Tatemae.

This is Wakayagi-ryu, not Inoue-ryu. Before you make any more bitchy comments on Karyukai videos that everyone is sick and tired of, at least learn to differentiate the dance styles ;)

@@weronikaczaja5937 bro he does this all the time he even lied his mother in law is geisha. That means the person he married had a geisha as a mother and guess what. Geisha cannot marry therefore they cannot have children to stay loyal to the geisha world. But why am I even telling you this? You're very knowledgeable
@princerschannel74264 жыл бұрын
@@mrs.excithsepy2987 an okiya mother can adopt one from her students and yes if u get married you abandon the giesha culture unless you don't want to leave you ask your okiya mother if it's ok if she agrees you and your baby girl/boy can stay and can be heir as an okiya
@MrsTavington12 күн бұрын
Kyllian, I will say a few things; I realize you commented on this long ago, and maybe you've changed your mind, but I will still speak: Firstly, this isn't Inoue Ryuu, it is Wakayagi. This isn't Gion, it's Miyagawacho. Secondly, if you know your geisha culture so well, you would also know that the profession began as one accessible to the merchant class. I also had the connections needed to get in there at all, and the money to do so--you are assuming a lot just because I'm a foreigner. Third, yes I was a foreigner, but I was not a tourist. I lived in Japan for several years. Fourth. I studied the culture deeply even before going to Japan. They knew I had nothing for the utmost respect for them. Fifth. Yea, my dancing was sloppy, because I was a fan, not a pro--I was also extremely nervous. On top of that, I practiced the junior part "two dancer version", not expecting the version they were doing. So all the movements I had memorized were changed. Sixth. If you really want to come onto a KZbin video and post about how geiko and Kyoto have supposedly lost their class, perhaps, just perhaps, you can take a lesson in written English. You have many mistakes in your written English; even the basics of capitalizing the first word of a sentence and proper nouns. I don't have to tell you how that makes you look, while calling professional geiko classless, right? Signed - The original ToshihaGeiko
